Earl named this group several years ago when they were founded. There were 60+ people in attendance to chat with Earl, hear what he has been doing, enjoy a root beer float and connect with other Medtronic retirees. Would you believe there were three original garage employees in attendance at the event; Earl Bakken, John Bravis, and Earl Hatten. What a pleasant surprise to be joined by Omar Ishrak, newly elected Medtronic Chairman and CEO. Omar shared with us his thoughts on the Medtronic mission and his philosophy of what we need to do to be successful in our future business endeavors which the retirees fully support. There were nothing but positive comments from the group. Jerry Hartlaub was recognized as the first Medtronic Dynamic Retiree for his community involvement and his contributions to the VSP Medtronic Retiree Club. A good time was had by all!! AAMI Award Dr. Earl Bakken received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) in August of this year. This prestigious lifetime achievement award was presented to Dr. Bakken in recognition of his significant contributions and accomplishments in advancing medical technology Fall Colors Train Trip Saturday, October 8 Please notice the registration form at the end of this newsletter. 2 PLAN TO ATTEND THIS UNIQUE Lunch & Learn PRESENTATION Speaker: Jack Keimel*, recent Medtronic retiree, Founder of New Hope Research Foundation Topic: An overview of lysosomal storage diseases** and the major challenges of finding treatments or a cure for the central nervous system aspects of these diseases. A unique retiree giving a presentation regarding his mission in life after Medtronic. Jack has children who suffer from this disease. Previous positions at Medtronic include Vice President of Arrhythmia Management Research & Advanced Concepts. Jack holds BS and MS engineering degrees. ** GM2 gangliosidosis, better known as Tay-Sachs Disease, belongs to a grouping of diseases called lysosomal storage diseases. These diseases are genetically transmitted and belong to an even larger class of diseases called Inborn Errors of Metabolism. If you ordered a t-shirt, you will receive it the day of the event. Second Harvest Heartland: October 25, 2011 (Tuesday), 1:00-4:00 pm One space left! Second Harvest Heartland supplies approximately 10,000 boxes of supplemental food per month to working families, hungry children and struggling seniors. In the past, the VSP Action Teams have contributed by hand-packing boxes. We will meet at the Second Harvest Heartland facility at 1140 Gervais Avenue in Maplewood, MN at 12:00 noon for a box lunch of your choice (see attached menu). The work shift will run from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Nov. 10, 2011 (Thurs.), 9:15-11:30 am Feed My Starving Children in Coon Rapids Registration is open! At the Feed My Starving Children headquarters at rd Avenue NW in Coon Rapids, the VSP Action team will fill life-saving meal packets that are boxed and shipped to countries affected by natural disaster or places enduring economic despair. FMSC meals go to orphanages, schools, clinics, refugee camps and malnourishment centers. Plan to meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Feed My Starving Children headquarters ( rd Avenue NW, Coon Rapids MN). After signing in and a brief overview, we will proceed to the adjoining facilities to pack food in teams. The workshift concludes at 11:30 a.m. Registration for this event is still open. To sign up, please Connie Langager at cmlangager@comcast.net or call MISSION IN MOTION/TIME N TALENT AWARD Are you volunteering 25 hours per calendar year to a 501(c)(3) charitable organization? Eligible volunteer service includes volunteer activities that benefit the general community including committee work, fundraising, tutoring, mentoring, and neighborhood revitalization (excluding political and fraternal organizations). If so, you may qualify for a $500 Medtronic Foundation grant to that organization. This award is renewable each year! To apply, go to OTHER COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES: Metro Meals on Wheels: Connect with others in your community by delivering hot and nutritious Meals on Wheels to seniors and individuals with disabilities. Volunteers deliver much more than a meal - they bring a smile and kind words, relieve isolation and provide peace of mind for meal recipients and their caregivers.

4 Volunteer one hour during lunch time; Monday through Friday. Volunteer weekly, monthly, be on-call, or volunteer on a schedule that works for you. There are 37 member programs throughout the Twin Cities, so there is sure to be a program near your home or work! Learn more: info@meals-on-wheels.com Store to Door Grocery Shopper Friday mornings - St. Anthony area: Store To Door is a non-profit grocery shopping and delivery service for elderly homebound unable to get out to the grocery store and shop for themselves. Clients often have chronic health issues which prevent them from using or accessing transportation to get to the store. We are expanding our service in the St. Anthony area and are looking for volunteers to help us shop on Friday mornings, 6:00-10:00 a.m. A 6-month time commitment is required; we can accommodate snowbird, vacation, and other schedule changes. Wanted: Stories About Earl The Bakken Museum is collecting stories about Earl Bakken to be used in a new book or on Earl s website. The book will feature mostly stories narrated by Earl, but will be supplemented with sidebars of stories by others that involve Earl. Amusing stories, stories that reveal Earl s character, and stories that reveal the flavor of life at Medtronic in earlier days are particularly desired. The goal is to collect the stories by year end and publish them in print or via web in Here is an example kindly provided by Barb Fellegy: Early in my career with Medtronic, I worked in the Medtronic Temp Pool and was called to work in various Medtronic locations. The first time I was called to a position at the St. Anthony Building (which was corporate headquarters), I got on the ground floor elevator and turned around coming face to face with Mr. Bakken - I got a little flustered not knowing if I should acknowledge him or just look away, so in awe, I said "good morning, Mr. Bakken"; he looked at me without cracking a smile and said, "it's Earl". Well, it made my day to think the Founder of Medtronic invited me to call him Earl but I so hoped I hadn't offended him. 5 In case you missed this article in the paper August 24: Man with Medtronic Disc Swims the English Channel On Sunday, August 21, Illinois native Doug McConnell swam across the 30-mile channel in 14 hours, 18 minutes as a way of raising money for ALS, or Lou Gehrig s disease. McConnell is the 48th person over the age of 50 to complete the swim and one of only 1,200 people to do so since the first person swam it in Considered the "Everest of open-water swimming," Doug s health was threatened during training when he developed a severely herniated disc that resulted in the loss of all use of his left arm. After physical therapy and other unsuccessful treatments, Doug underwent a cervical disc replacement procedure with the Medtronic PRESTIGE Cervical Disc system. Today, Doug has regained strength in his arm, has retained the ability to move his neck to breathe while swimming, and swims without pain. In Remembrance Menken, John passed away Monday, August 8. It s a very casual 90 minute round trip form Osceola, Wisconsin to Marine on the Osceola St. Croix Valley Railway. Bus transportation will be arranged and paid for by the VSP. We will meet at the Target store parking lot, 694 and Central Avenue, at 9am. If you drive separately, arrive at the Osceola Depot, 114 Depot Road, Osceola, WI by 10:45 am.
