1 MotivAsians News March 2011 Volume III, Issue II Lunar New Year 2011 On February 5, 2011, over 50 MotivAsians members and friends gathered at Li Wah to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit! Welcome to the first time members who got to experience a MotivAsians tradition. For more pictures go to: New Member Profile Molly Qin graduated from Case Western Reserve University last winter (2010). She is now working in the risk management group at Keybank. She reached out to Alison Li (MotivAsians Management Team member) last year when she was still a student and Alison introduced her to MotivAsians. Molly says, MotivAsians organizes great events for networking and lectures. As I am taking the very first steps in my career, I will try to get more involved in professional networking. As we work, read, and hear about the civic goals of our region, we often think, what we can do to support these worthwhile initiatives? Well, here is we MotivAsians proposes to work toward Greater Cleveland achieving the following four goals. 1) Greater collaboration and recognition for the young professional community MotivAsians leadership is amongst a select group of YPs working with senior leaders in the community to develop and implement a plan for the future. 2) Global Cleveland Initiative - Mayor Jackson said, "The city will become a destination for immigrant families, international businesses and international students. During the week of April 11, MotivAsians plans to host a panel discussion at Case University School of Business for International students on how to stay in the US post graduation. (More details to come) 3) Small Business / Entrepreneurship A key to economic development in Greater Cleveland. In the Fall, MotivAsians plans to host a business plan competition that focuses on business development between Cleveland and China. Cosponsored by Green Apple Properties. (More details to come) 4) Discover Cleveland! - While many of us have lived here a while, and know of certain businesses, we don't really know much about them and their operations. Thus, MotivAsians plans to connect our members to these established Cleveland businesses. First stop will be the Plain Dealer's production plant the first week of May. Manuel and Dado are Pinoys, young Filipinos living in Taipei in a migrant community of non-chinese speakers. They chafe under the strict rules of the bicycle manufacturing company that employs them, living in fear of not making it back to their dormitory by the time the inscrutable gatekeeper closes the gates every evening. Manuel and Dado both live for Sundays when the overseas Filipino workers seek community around a Catholic church. One Sunday Dado discovers a brand-new red couch standing on a street corner, which he takes as a gift from heaven. All he has to do is persuade Manuel to help him carry this bulky new object of his desire clear across the city and back to their dorm. Inspired by Roman Polanski s 1958 short film "Two Men and a Wardrobe," PINOY SUNDAY is a slightly surreal exploration of the multicultural landscape and rhythm of modern Taipei. The program seeks to build relationships among civic leaders through experiential collaboration and civic education. Participants develop their civic leadership capacity through a highly interactive curriculum including individual leadership assessments, small group discussion, presentations from community leaders, engagement in team projects, and review of best practices in leadership across sectors. The application deadline is April 1, Learn more at On April 2, 2011 the Case Western Asian Pacific American Law Students Association will host the 2011 Midwest APALSA Conference at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, entitled East Meets West: Emerging Issues in Law and the Legal Profession. The conference is an opportunity for students and professionals to discuss the evolution of cultural diversity within the law and law firms. The day-long event features attorneys, professors, and judges from a variety of professional backgrounds. Attendees will have the opportunity to attend panel discussions that cover a broad range of issues, from career planning to diversity in law firms. AsiaTown Makeover SCSDC was awarded a TLCI grant from NOACA to study Superior Ave from E.30th St to E.40th St & E. 36th St b/w Superior and St. Clair Avenues. The goal was to create a plan to transform Superior Ave and East 36th St into a friendly environment for pedestrians & businesses. This plan will complement & continue to build upon the many developments happening in AsiaTown. Snowtubing at Brandywine On January 15, some adventuresome MotivAsians members tackled the hills at Brandywine. While the temperature was cold, the hills were hot with flying tubes.
