2 Vice President Tracy Tinsley convened the meeting, Al Verstuyft lead the pledge of allegiance and Tracy Tinsley recited the Four way test with Kathi Metro pointing to the banner! Our Guest from Modoc Rotary Greetings and Introductions: Karen Vegas our speaker from Queen of the Valley Medical Center (QVMC) and Walt Mickens CEO QVMC; Warren Mufich s octogenarians guests Jerry Hofsee, a 35 yr. Modoc Rotary member who has recently relocated to Napa, Clyde Anderson former North Napa Rotarian. Warren offered a Rotary shirt from Alturas and valuable Rotary gold coins for the raffle. Rotarian of Evening: anonymous Thought for the Meeting: From Maya Angolou "I have found among its other benefits, giving benefits the soul of the giver." Elevator Speech: Tracy asked for a volunteer to give a one-minute elevator speech on What Rotary means to me. No volunteer came forward and Tracy reminded us Rotary is a volunteer organization. Ross Macky wants to know what an alligator speech is. John Duser said he learned about volunteering in the Army! Edgar Calvelo, our distinguished Assistant District Governor, had a one minute speech why and how I become a Rotarian. I wanted to return something to the community. I was practicing medicine in Jackson, Michigan. A Jackson Rotarian owner the beeper/pager business and invited me to join. Rotary is because you want to give to the community. 2

3 Birthday Celebrations: None! Happy Dollars: Lots of Happy Dollars because Tracy was collecting! Kathi Metro had Sad Dollars because she missed the meeting due to car problems and Happy Dollars because the car bill was small! George Lundberg had sad dollars for missing meetings. His happy dollars were for a great East Coast visit to New York that was punctuated by a snow storm and being bumped off a flight! Mike Riddle had happy dollars for a successful Vintage Band competition. Ted Witten s happy $ were for his grandson successfully kicking at his football game! Larry Renner received free notary (from a Rotarian?) and is donating what he might have paid as Happy $. Edgar Calvelo attended the Napa Valley Film Festival and saw 6 short minutes film. Tom Webber s Happy $ are Cal won! He could not get tickets to the Big Game so he s going to Las Vegas to watch the Big Game with some high school buddies (Go Bears!). Ted Witten s happy $ are Lil is driving new vanilla latte Cadillac. Club Notes: Rotary Foundation Month so Ted Witten will be looking for donations. See Ted or John Tracy did not read the Nominating Committee s proposed a slate of officers for July to June , however, they are Tracy Tinsley President, Mike Riddle Vice President; John Kempkey, Michele McClure, Michael Redman, Travis Hart for Board Members (need 2 members). They will be read at two future meetings in keeping with the by-laws. Nominations will be accepted from floor. The Dec 13 meeting new officers will be elected. 3

4 Nomination Leaders in a Wine Filled Room! Who are these Guys?! Hiway 29 cleanup featured Michael Redman, Ross Macky, Ted Witten, John Duser, Carl Mianecke, and Edgar Calvelo. Edgar took pictures and found $1.03 in four places! Tom Webber reported The Napa Homebrewers Classic had proceeds of $6597 net! ($13,000+ gross). He acknowledged Mike Riddle s leadership and others who coordinated and worked the event. Hiway beautification cleanup project November 19. Larry Renner, Ross Macky and Ted Witten could use help. Contact Larry. Ted Witten reported on the joint project with District 4150 to building a 75 kv substation for a home for the elderly in Puerto Viharta. Ted with work with an electrical engineering to provide both technical guidance and project management. Tracy Tinsley had handouts on Rotary info including Cycle for Sight 4/21/12 and a 16 page from Rotary Club of Sebastopol. 5 Walt Mickens and Karen Vegas Queen of the Valley Medical Center Advanced Diagnostics and Surgical Procedures Construction- The speakers gave their own brief introductions. Walt came to QVMC as CEO in QVMC has operated for 53 years with a mission of healing to community. Its common ground is Napa and beyond. The St. Joseph Health System is 15 hospitals in northern and southern California and Texas with $4 B operating budget. Its reached is reach is beyond the local community as it worked to rebuilding a Pt. Prince Haiti Hospital. QMVC is raising funds for a $132M project with $130M quiet phase ($15M) before public. Thanks to Wendy Bennett s connect as a QVMC volunteer and Friend of Rotary for arranging this presentation! Karen has been at QVMC 6 yrs. and responsible for 6 building project as an AIA architect and construction manager. Seismic codes were upgraded for medical facilities after Northridge Medical Center collapse during the 91 quake. QVMC is completing construction to conform to the new seismic standards. QVMC is a landlocked facility that needed a new lab with a small footprint. To best use limited space and be forward thinking a sq. ft. ICU, OR and lab were proposed with a completion date of 1QT13. The project is at the 50% on timeline and shrink-wrapped to work during the winter. The building takes five years from conception to completion. 5

6 Karen gave great examples of using Evidenced Based Design such as decentralized nursing stations for each nurse to see head of person of her patients; same handed vs. mirror-image patient rooms where the conventional mirror image was more cost effective with no increased risk. Given the size of the facility it is being built to LEED standards and will achieve a Gold rating. Integrated Project Delivery was used where the major subcontractors have been part of the process since the beginning. This collaboration and ownership minimizes rework. Rework is further minimized using a 5D mode. The 5D model is based 3D (length, width, height), plus Time and cost. The model allows real time manufacturing of components and identifies potential conflicts before they physically occur. This approach optimizes manufacturing, minimizes delays and rework, resulting in reduced costs. 6
