The River City Blues Society meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each Month at 7:00 pm at Goodfellas Pub & Pizza, 1414 N 8th Street, Pekin, Illinois All meetings are open to the public. News of the Blues is published Quarterly by the River City Blues Society and is mailed to all paid members as part of their membership dues.

3 Greetings all you blues fans. First, I d like to say thank you to all our members and volunteers. It has been a record breaking, productive and enjoyable year and we couldn t do it without you. My first term as your President has just flown by and is coming to a close. I am again running for President and feel that the momentum we ve gotten this first year will continue to make River City Blues Society stand out as one of the strongest. I encourage you all to attend Kirk Sheckler our nomination and elections meeting (see p. 9 for details). Without the support, both financial and volunteering, from you the member, the society will become a fan club. So I encourage you to vote your choice(s) in November and December. For the first time, we will also be allowing voting right on the new website as well, so be sure to visit often to get the details. Nominations (in person) will ONLY be accepted at the November 11th meeting. The board recently reviewed our 2010 goals and graded ourselves a B on producing more memorable shows, but a D on increasing membership and volunteers. There were other items graded as well but these two particularly stand out as something we need to work on. (Please see April Newsletter for goal details.) Do give us suggestions. A few other items of interest I would like to bring to your attention is our improved website with members only content (p. 9), affiliation with Music is the Medicine (details p. 6) and the River Beach Pub bus trip to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge in February 2011 (details p. 7). We are adding new content on our website to keep you, our members informed of happenings within the society. The key is to sign in to get content that is available to members in good standing. MitM is an opportunity that our Education Committee has embraced to expose schools, children & adults to the blues. So be sure to come out on November 13th and support this effort to Bring the Blues to You! And lastly, a few members went on the bus trip to Memphis last year with the crew from River Beach Pub (one of our sponsors). What a great time! So if you re interested in going please contact Larry or Brenda. Finally, I would like to extend our Society s gratitude to Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment for their collaboration in holding our Blues Foundation Road to Memphis Challenge competition at the Illinois Blues Fest on Labor Day weekend. We showcased six bands from the area for two days and crowned Matt Curry & the Blues Fury on Saturday eve before Johnny Winter went on the main stage. So if you want to have a great time come to Memphis, see blues bands from all over the world and support our entry, Matt Curry & the Blues Fury. See the website or anyone on the board for details to get your rooms and sign up for the bus trip! I promise once you go, you ll go again. Thank you for supporting the blues, Kirk The Prez says 3

4 From the Cover Matthew Curry and The Blues Fury Wins IBC Challenge On behalf of the RCBS I would like to thank our members and sponsors for your support of the Society. And a special thank you to Goodfellas for hosting our events this year. We have produced great, memorable shows this year with national and regional artists and look forward to producing many more. Additionally, we would like to thank Jay Goldberg for inviting us back to the Budweiser Illinois Blues Fest and providing an awesome venue (CEFCU Stage) to host our Illinois Blues Challenge The Road to Memphis. This year s winner is a very special young man, Mr. Matthew Curry and the Blues Fury out of Bloomington, IL. RCBS wishes them good luck in Memphis and I for one will be there to support you and your band. Thanks to the bands from around the state including Lizzie Neal Band (Rockford), Billy King Band (Chicago), Danny and the Devils (Chicago), Big Silver Derailed (Pekin), and Easy Riders (Peoria) for being in this challenge. There certainly were no losers. The audience response and attendance proved that out when several members from various bands jammed out during the intermission before the finals! Thank you again to everyone for making this years Illinois Blues Challenge a great success. Thank You, Scott Gregory Entertainment Director 22 Years of the Best Blues on the Peoria Riverfront The 22nd year of Central Illinois Premier Blues Festival was held September 3 & 4 on the Peoria Riverfront. Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment, in association with the Illinois Blues Coalition teamed up to present another fantastic talent line-up. The festival was not possible without the support of the City of Peoria, the Peoria Park District, Brewers Distributing Company and Budweiser. We welcomed our renewed association with the River City Blues Society in sponsoring The Road To Memphis. Our blues festival is now the home to the prestigious competition leading up to the Blues Foundation s International Blues Challenge. This opportunity to see the best of the independent blues the state has to offer. We are also proud to represent the Illinois Blues Coalition, a not-forprofit organization dedicated to continue our tradition of supporting The Blues by offering grants and scholarships to help fund projects which preserve and promote the history and future of blues music. If you or your blues related organization is interested in financial support for a specific project, send a request for information to: Illinois_Blues_Coalition@jaytv.com. Thanks to Ed Knott, we had another tremendous talent line-up! Jay Goldberg Event Producer Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment 4

6 6 Society news RCBS Collaborates with Music is the Medicine The River City Blues Society has recently joined forces with the Music is the Medicine Foundation. Together they will be bringin the medicine!! The Music Is the Medicine Foundation is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, created to positively impact lives through the healing power of music. We believe that music can inspire tangible change in the world. Through passion, a vision has been created a vision to unite a diverse community of music lovers and artists in order to inspire others through the following programs and initiatives: The Healing Guitars program - We will provide guitars and lessons for kids and adults facing challenges in their lives and allow them to realize the healing power of music and dream of things that could be. Underfunded music programs in schools will also be benefactors of the MitM foundation. The On the Wings of a Song program - We will enable people to express their feelings through song with Anthony Gomes help. This will help to provide a voice for those that might not have one now through songwriting. Concert Events - We will collaborate with entities, bands, and venues who bring the medicine for concert events in an effort to spread the message of healing through music and to raise awareness of the Music is the Medicine Foundation. Fundraising - We will strive to be actively raising funds to ensure that we are able to positively impact as many people as possible. We will do this through donations, merchandise and other events. MitM will also donate to other causes that positively impact lives. Local Community Events - We believe that it is important to give back and help unite our local communities and will look to be a part of local events to spread the healing message at home. Speaking of local community events, the Academy of Fretted Instruments (AoFI) will be hosting an instructor s concert, Evening of the Blues, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on November 13th, 7:30 pm. The River City Blues Society and Music is the Medicine are honored to be an affiliate with this special event! For more information, please call (309) 676-FRET. Mark this date down and be ready to receive some medicine for the soul! Visit Music is the Medicine on Facebook and at MITM would like to thank the River City Blues Society for believing that, through music, all things are possible. Justin Hamilton Education Director
