2 11TH ANNUAL BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL IS THREE DAY EVENT The 11 th annual Vine Grove Bluegrass Festival gets underway Thursday, September 23, at the Ewart Amphitheater in the Optimist Park. The evening begins with a free supper at 6 p.m. for the first 250 people with paid admission. Evening events include a Band Scramble in which the names of band members will be drawn randomly to form a new group, which will have only a few minutes to prepare their performance. There also will be the Roscoe Byrd Fiddle Off featuring the Orange Blossom Special. The Moron Brothers will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. to share their homespun humor as well as their talent for bluegrass music. Tommy Brown & the County Line Grass will perform at 9:30 p.m. A third generation musician, Tommy began pickin' the fivestring banjo at age six. His powerful style and soulful vocals embrace his passion for the mountain-style bluegrass music he performs today. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 Tommy Brown & the County Line Grass will start the evening at 5 p.m. and perform again at 8 p.m. Since 2002 Tommy has had the rare opportunity to present a fourth generation of musicians to audiences around the country. Seventeen-yearold son, Jereme Brown, handles lead guitar and Hazel Holler takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. and again at 9:30 p.m. They are an allfemale group from Eastern Kentucky, playing regional Appalachian music, almost forgotten country songs, bluegrass and original songs. Sponsored by the Vine Grove Bluegrass Festival, Inc., local merchants, the City of Vine Grove and founding sponsor The Cecilian Bank. Schedule may change without notice. Gene Thompson & Crossroads will follow at 5:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Band members include Gene Thompson on mandolin, Jim Moore on bass, Albert Fox on fiddle Tom Murphy on guitar, and Tweed Donohoe on banjo. 3 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 The Vine Grove Jammers will start the day at 11:30 a.m. with their entertaining blend of music. This group was formed as a result of the weekly Bluegrass jam sessions held in Vine Grove. We look forward to hearing them perform. The Vine Grove Express follows at 12:45 p.m. and again at 5:45 p.m. This group got their start at the weekly Bluegrass jam sessions held in Vine Grove for the past few years. They include: Wayne Reynolds guitar, vocals; Wayne Mabe banjo; Rick Smith mandolin; Gerald Fowlerbass; Frank Fowler guitar; Margaret Hamilton- vocals; Melanie Belfiore fiddle, clogging and vocals; and Maci Belfiore fiddle, clogging and vocals. Big Country Bluegrass will take the stage at 2:15 p.m. to deliver their own harddriving style of bluegrass that makes them crowd favorites wherever they perform. With two decades of experience, the band offers the very best of traditional bluegrass music. Their sound is reminiscent of Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs at their very best. Look for their second performance of the day at 7:15 p.m. C.J. Lewandowski & The Men of the Week take the stage at 12 noon and again at 5 p.m. Based out of the Missouri Ozarks, C.J. Lewandowski & The Men of The Week is a bluegrass band that is steeped in the traditions of the music. This group utilizes single microphone skills to provide a tight, self balanced sound...just as the pioneers of bluegrass did. Bluegrass 101 will perform at 1:30 p.m. This group was formed in 1994 by Terry Waldridge, and is a hard driving, traditional bluegrass band. At the age of 35, Terry began playing bluegrass for the very first time, but with his smooth vocals and guitar playing you wouldn t be the wiser. Bluegrass 101 will astonish you with their vocal harmony and precise traditional music. This group will take the stage again at 6:30 p.m. Jr. Sisk & Ramblers Choice will entertain the crowd at 3 p.m. This group is gaining great recognition as one of the best traditional bluegrass bands to hit the scene in decades. They will perform again at 8 p.m. Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper Takes the stage at 3:45 p.m. Considered one of the premier bluegrass fiddlers of his generation, Mike picked up a fiddle at age four, and his talent was recognized early. In 1993 he was chosen to be part of the Bluegrass Youth All Stars at the IBMA s award show. Later that year, Mike made his Grand Ole Opry debut as a guest of Alison Krauss. This talented group will close out the evening at 8:45 p.m. Join us as we celebrate the best in buegrass music. We know you will enjoy each of the bands as they perform favorites, new and old! Don t miss the Knife Raffle & Auction which will take place at 4:30 p.m.

6 CHIEF MANNING REMINDS US THAT COURTEOUS DRIVING SAVES LIVES As Chief of Police, I would like to remind citizens to be aware of the rules of the road when driving. Many of us get caught up in the day-to-day grind, rushing to work or getting the kids to soccer practice. With so many families relying on both parents to make a living, time has become a precious commodity. However, our lives and those of our families are even more precious. Vine Grove has a reputation of being a great community, partly because of the hospitality shown by the people who live here. I challenge each of you to take it to the next level by also being known as some of the most courteous and safe drivers in the state! It is essential that each of us remembers some of the basic rules of the road. Rolling through a stop sign or red light, or worse, not stopping at all can be deadly. In Hardin County, at least two people have lost their lives in the past three months due to such carelessness. One of those people was a three year old child. Tailgating is another deadly game too many of us play. We should always remember to leave at least two full seconds between us and the vehicle in front of us. If the driver in front should have to stop suddenly, a vehicle following too closely would not have time to stop safely. Drivers should also be reminded that passing on the right is not only dangerous, it s illegal. When the driver in front is slowing or stopped to make a left-hand turn, it is proper to stay directly behind them in your own lane. Please take into consideration that there could be a pedestrian or cyclist on the shoulder of that road, or even another vehicle that may be broken down and awaiting a tow. Often times there is debris along the shoulders of highways that could flip up when hit, causing damage to the underside of your vehicle. In an intersection, there is always the possibility of another driver making a right hand turn onto the roadway taking advantage of the stopped traffic. It s important to understand that pulling out in front of oncoming traffic, particularly on the highway is one of the most dangerous acts we can commit. Is it really worth your life, or the life of someone you love to save a second or two of time? We often think that the other guy will slow down or stop to accommodate us, but if the other driver is distracted, it might be the last thing we think. Once we do enter a roadway, it is vital to go with the flow of traffic as quickly as possible. Driving much slower than the existing traffic creates bottle-necking, adding to the frustration of other drivers. It is imperative to remember that we must allow emergency vehicles the right of way when their lights and/or sirens are running. The life they are trying to save may be someone you love. By practicing a few basic courtesies when behind the wheel of the car, we make the road safer for everyone. Remember to allow a few extra minutes for your drive time. Offer to give the other driver the right-of-way at a four-way stop. In heavy traffic, allow other drivers to change lanes when they need to. Obey all traffic devices. Stay with the flow of traffic. Driving too slow is as dangerous as driving too fast. Keep your attention focused on the road. Distracted drivers are dangerous drivers. Pay it forward. When we are shown courtesy when driving, return the favor. Remember, it s better to be a few minutes late than to not reach your destination at all. Steve Manning Vine Grove Chief of Police
