2007 Missouri Mountain Gang 1

Missouri Mountain Gang is best described as a traditionally based bluegrass band that incorporates four lead vocalists with 3 and 4-part harmonies, high energy & high entertainment shows. With natural unscripted humor, great traditional and contemporary musicianship, and most of all a strong variety of song selections from which to draw upon, the audience is kept entertained and tappin their feet. From hard drivin straight ahead bluegrass to ballads and instrumentals that have brought an emotional tear to listener s eyes, they provide a show that audiences will remember for a long time. They love to interact with the audience, both during and after the show, and have made many long-term friendships as a result Missouri Mountain Gang 2

Missouri Mountain Gang was formed in early 2006 with several experienced musicians coming from a wide variety of traditional and contemporary bluegrass backgrounds. Friendships immediately developed adding fun and high energy to the group, which started with four members and quickly grew to a six-member group. Today, they are a four-member group with more, yet tighter sound than they had as a six-member group. Their goal is to play and promote traditional bluegrass while bringing a fresh excitement to the sound. Their play list includes songs from bluegrass greats such as Jimmy Martin, Stanley Brothers, and Bill Monroe, to Alison Krauss, as well as originals written by members of the group. With the group s time-honored bluegrass sound, it was important to find an appropriate name to match the group. Dean Baty, father of one of the band members, is a long time Springfield, MO, area musician. When Dean played back in the 60 s it was with Roy Craft and other great area musicians in a band called the Missouri Mountain Boys. That band was obviously influential in selecting a name to keep the tradition alive. Since this new group is not all boys, it was agreed that Missouri Mountain Gang would be more appropriate. Many event promoters also call upon the band to play an all bluegrass gospel set, which are sometimes more difficult for the promoters to book. Missouri Mountain Gang not only can do multiple sets of gospel music without repeating songs, but they can also do Christmas music when requested. Missouri Mountain Gang also owns one of the vary best sound systems in Missouri, which is run under the name of Creek s Arisin Sound. They can provide sound solutions for your event and still perform as a band without issue. The sound provided is often discounted when the band is also booked. Missouri Mountain Gang also hosts the two Ozark Mountain Bluegrass Festivals in Ozark, MO and is heavily involved in promoting bluegrass in southwest Missouri. The individual band members are highlighted below Missouri Mountain Gang 3

Member Introductions Marty Baty, from Nixa, MO, plays guitar and sings bluegrass in the traditional style of Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe, Jim & Jesse, and Ralph Stanley. The true bluegrass sound still remains today, in Marty s heart-felt singing ability and strong/steady guitar rhythm. Marty grew up in bluegrass because of his parent s love of the music and his dad s traveling on the bluegrass circuit. His dad, Dean Baty, is a longtime area musician having played back in the 60 s. Not only did Marty grow up among musicians, he also learned barre chords from Slim Wilson, and met many bluegrass legends. These influences are apparent in Marty s own talents, which are firmly rooted in tradition. Marty is also known for his extensive knowledge of historical bluegrass facts. Larry Mayfield, from Ozark, MO, plays mandolin, guitar, fiddle, sings, and is a creative songwriter for the group. He originally co-founded the bluegrass band, Creek s Arisin and produced & mixed their debut CD. Teaching guitar at a young age, and four years of collegiate music study at Drury University in Springfield, MO, has provided additional knowledge unavailable to most bluegrass groups. Cofounder of the Missouri Mountain Gang, he is also the booking agent and promoter. With a natural ear for music, he provides crystal clear sound solutions for regional bluegrass events under the name of Creek s Arisin Sound. As producer and event promoter of the Ozark Mountain Bluegrass Festival, and co-producer of the Wooley Creek School Bluegrass Festival, his love of bluegrass is obvious. His friendly disposition and easy-going personality also makes Larry one of the most admired bluegrass contacts in Southwest Missouri Missouri Mountain Gang 4

Mary Mayfield, from Ozark, MO, plays bass fiddle and sings. She was a cofounder of the bluegrass band, Creek s Arisin and is now a cofounder of Creek s Arisin Sound, plus the editor and publisher of the entertaining Creek s Up! newsletter. Mary s polished vocals have been compared to those of Patty Loveless, Dolly Parton, June Carter Cash, and even Alison Krause. She is also an event promoter for the Ozark Mountain Bluegrass Festival and the Wooley Creek School Bluegrass Festival. Most promotional materials that you will see at these events were designed and published by Mary. As a matter of fact, so was this press kit. Watch out if she has a camera hidden behind her doghouse bass fiddle you might just end up in the next entertaining newsletter that she writes! Jack Bowden, from North Carolina, comes from a musical family who grew up singing together. He is known as Banjo Jack, but also plays the guitar and harmonica. You may have seen him in a variety of places such as on the streets of Silver Dollar City near Branson, Missouri, singing on the paddlewheeler Henrietta II in Wilmington, North Carolina, opening for such country greats as Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Shelly West, or playing in the West Texas Opry Stage Band with Johnny Gimble in Lubbock, Texas. Jack has been in several country and bluegrass bands throughout his 25 years in the music business, including: Armadillo Flats, Bryson Bowden Band, Live Bait, Underdog String Band, U.E. Dodge Revue, Skin Deep, The Bonzo Boys, and many others. You can still catch him on the streets of Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO as he periodically entertains patrons of the well-known theme park. Now that he s bout got the hang of it, he says he s gonna keep on playing and singin for at least another 25 or 50 years! 2007 Missouri Mountain Gang 5

Bob Gideon from Hurley, MO plays banjo, guitar, sings and is a seasoned veteran of bluegrass. He periodically appears with Missouri Mountain Gang and thus deserves special recognition. Bob played with the Springfield, MO group Wires & Wood for several years, plus a bluegrass festival circuit favorite, Brightwater Junction, from Cassville, MO for eight years. Late in 2006 he began performing with the nationally known group Liberty Bluegrass out of Liberty, Texas (near Houston). Bob now performs throughout the Ozarks with the talented and popular bluegrass group Missouri Boatride out of Branson West. His natural talent and warm personality always make it a pleasure to have Bob play with us! Missouri Mountain Gang contact information: Larry or Mary Mayfield P.O.
