2 Dear Supporters, Let s celebrate! June 2015, the African American Voice is marking its 24th year in business and its 24th year hosting the Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival. To commemorate both, AAV is presenting a range of activities, including a press conference and reception, a Juneteenth flag raising ceremony, civil and human rights awards dinner and festival in the park. (Schedule of events/information is in the partnership packet.) This June - Juneteenth - marks the 150th anniversary of the oldest Dr. James Tucker African American holiday. It began on June 19, 1865, when the slaves learned of the Emancipation Proclamation. June is also National Caribbean Heritage Month, when Americans celebrate Caribbean s contributions in United States and world history. Colorado is the first state to host a Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival connecting people of African descent. We invite you to participate to help preserve the heritage and embrace the experiences of Americans with African descent. This event provides cultural enrichment and promotes cultural understanding to the greater community. Partnership, exhibitor and vendor opportunities are available. Your participation will give you exposure to those in attendance and will help us in our efforts to preserve the United States of America s rich history. In addition, your participation will help promote education, economics and health issues/ concerns within the community. In closing, we are grateful for your dedication to improving race relations and support for people of African descent. We are doing everything we can to keep the community informed and make positive contributions to our community. Thank you in advance for supporting us. I hope to see you and yours at the 150th Juneteenth anniversary and National Caribbean Heritage Month celebration. Ca ri 150th Anniversary He ri iv al June te e 2015 ean bb Fe st Dr. James Tucker National Juneteenth State Director Black Communities United for Progress h nt ge ta Respectfully,
3 Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival: What s in the Name? James Tucker, publisher and founder of the African American Voice newspaper had a vision to combine the traditional Juneteenth Festival with National Caribbean American Heritage Month, thereby creating the Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival. As a result, Colorado became the first state to host such an event, and Fountain became the first city in the state. Tucker believes that this union of names will give all Americans the opportunity to recognize American freedom and Black history. June is an important month that celebrates rich history and vibrant cultures. It also provides an opportunity for Blacks to connect to their ancestors. Juneteenth Juneteenth is the oldest Black American holiday. It began on June 19, 1865, when the slaves learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, proclaiming the freedom of slaves in 10 states. Since then, Blacks have gathered every year to celebrate this special holiday, now known as Juneteenth. Because this holiday represented what the Fourth of July meant to Americans, Black Americans celebrated Juneteenth in much the same way the Fourth of July was celebrated. Parades were held. Speeches were made. Games were played. Special food was served. Juneteenth offi cially began with a parade. Brass bands led the procession, followed by Blacks who had once been enslaved. After the parade, people gathered to hear the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and General Order #3. Speeches were made and prayer services were held. Freedom Songs, such as Free at Last and patriotic songs, such as The Star Spangled Banner were sung. The American fl ag was seen everywhere decorating fl oats and grandstands. People were proud to be free, American citizens. National Caribbean American Heritage Month In May 2010, President Barack Obama proclaimed June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month, a month that celebrates the history and culture of Caribbean Americans. It is a month that recognizes the diverse cultures and contributions of Americans who trace their heritage to the Caribbean. Over centuries, Caribbean Americans are believed to have come to America through the bondage of slavery while others voluntarily came in search of a better life. They have made signifi cant contributions in America s history and, during the month of June, all Americans will have the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the history and accomplishments of these immigrants. Tucker has adopted these two traditions, Juneteenth and National Caribbean American Heritage Month, and joined them into one because he strongly believes that knowledge about various cultures, particularly that of Black Americans, is one of the ways to improve our city, county, state, and nation. Moreover, he believes that as we look ahead to our future, the Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival will allow us to Remember Our Ancestors of the past and celebrate one of the most exciting historical events in Colorado s history. The Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival will be held from June 19-21, 2015 at Hillside Community Center, Fountain Park, 925 South Institute Street, Colorado Springs, CO C a r Please call or info@africanamericanvoice.net if you have any questions. t h i b b e a n M o n A m e r Colorado H e r i t a g e i c a n
