SPEC /0/26 1/ PURPOSE This specification describes the administrative drawing requirements such as numbering, titles, and border information, etc. for Engineering Drawings produced for Vale. 2.0 GENERAL All new drawings produced must be Microstation DGN Format, V compatible. In special circumstances only, AutoCAD may be used where approved in writing by Vale (using form NAV-TE-101) and only for the creation of new drawings or the revision of existing AutoCAD drawings. See SPEC-0014 for specific AutoCAD requirements. 3.0 DRAWING NUMBERS The drawing numbering system applies to all drawings produced for Vale that are archived in the Drawing Management System. The following example shows a typical drawing number: Plant Number B Area Number Discipline Code Sequential Number Vendor, Fabrication and Shop Drawing Numbers These drawings follow the same format, except that the Sequential number is prefixed with the letter A, followed by five digits, eg B-A See SPEC-0003 for Vale drawing type definitions. If there is any uncertainty on whether a drawing should be classified as a vendor drawing, it should be clarified with Vale before the number is reserved.
SPEC /0/26 2/ PLANT NUMBERS The following is a list of standard plant numbers used in the Drawing Management System: 1 34 Murray Mine 67 2 Clarabelle Pit 35 Shebandowan Mine Little Stobie Mine Stobie Mine No. 7 And 70 Port Colborne Refinery 5 3 Totten Mine No. 2 Shaft 71 C.C. 3 SPEC /0/26 3/ AREA NUMBERS There are multiple Area Numbers for each Plant Number. A current list of Area Numbers can be found in the Drawing Management System or can be requested through drawing controls. 3.3 DISCIPLINE CODES The following is a summary of the Discipline Codes used within the drawing number, which include but are not limited to the following: A Flow Diagrams (Process Flow Diagrams) B General or Multiple Discipline General arrangements, architectural drawings and details, maps, site plans, plot plans, building layouts. C Civil Engineering Soils investigations, marine facilities, dredging, piling, roads, bridges, dams, tailings pond, railroads, water supply and distribution, service, pipelines buried or above grade outside of building structure (other than process lines). D Concrete All concrete foundations and related excavations, all concrete structures. E Structural All load-bearing components of structures designed in materials other than concrete. Miscellaneous steelwork. F Process (Mechanical and Chemical) Vessels, all process lines, pumps, conveyors, feeders, furnaces, roasters, kilns, filters, cranes, crushers, mills, skips, cables, loading pockets. G Mechanical Services Steam generation, heating, ventilation, dust collection, cable trays and service lines within a building and mines underground. H Electrical Power generation, distribution, grounding and lighting. J Instrumentation Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Instrumentation layouts, equipment for sensing, recording, displaying, and control of process.
SPEC /0/26 4/ SEQUENTIAL NUMBER FOR ARCHIVED DRAWINGS The Sequential Number is a 6 digit number automatically assigned by the Drawing Management System. It is unique only to the plant number. Sequential numbers for new drawings must be reserved within the Drawing Management System before use. 4.0 NUMBERING FOR DRAWINGS AT FEL STAGES Drawings produced at the various FEL stages are not archived in the Drawing Management system and the drawing number is not reserved. FEL stage drawings are numbered using the Vale Engineering Job number as the prefix. The following example shows a typical FEL stage drawing number: When using an existing drawing as a background for a FEL stage drawing, it is a good practice to indicate the drawing number in a note as per the following example: This drawing copied from drawing no C SEQUENTIAL NUMBER FOR FEL DRAWINGS The Design Team Leader will assign the sequential numbers. DISCIPLINE Sequential Number Series Civil / Mechanical / Flowsheets / G.A. s Electrical Instrumentation
SPEC /0/26 5/15 For FEL stage drawings, place the following cell in the bottom right corner of the drawing (from Cell Lib DMENU Cell Name: ESTLOGO). The assigned design engineer s name is entered in the Verified by box, once he/she has given approval to do so. 5.0 DRAWING S Drawings must be titled such that logical key words will make future drawing searches effective. The following example shows the typical format for the drawing title block: PLANT Name of Mine or Plant AREA Name of Plant Area (See the Drawing Management System for the full List) Detailed description of drawing contents Line 1 Detailed description of drawing contents Line 2 (if required) SUB PLANT Division of Mine or Plant, or Sub-plant and/or year of extension (if applicable) CLASSIFICATION (Keyword) (See example listing below) Example of typical Classification keywords: Flow Diagram, Plot Plan, Architectural, Yard Piping, Roadwork, Concrete, Foundations, Steelwork, Mechanical, Mechanical Services, Conveyor, Crusher, Dust Collection, Electrical, Power Distribution, Grounding, Lighting, Instrumentation, PLC, etc.
SPEC /0/26 6/15 The following shows typical examples of drawing titles: PLANT COPPER CLIFF SMELTER SUB PLANT MATTE PROCESSING AREA CLASSIFICATION SEPARATION BUILDING DUST COLLECTION #4 BAGHOUSE DUCTING GENERAL ARRANGEMENT AND DETAILS PLANT CREIGHTON SUB PLANT #9 SHAFT AREA GENERAL UNDERGROUND PICKING CONVEYOR HEAD CHUTE LINER LAYOUT CLASSIFICATION CONVEYORS 6.0 THE DRAWING BORDER All drawings are created based on a 22 x 34 sheet size. The border, including the title block is inserted as a cell at the appropriate drawing scale. All drawing border information is entered electronically using custom tag sets within the border cell as per Vale Standard SPEC (for Engineering Consultants) or SPEC-0016 (for in-house Engineering). Note: When entering information into the title block using the border fill utility, do not use the special characters for Vale font 3 (as outlined in the Text Section of this document). These characters cannot be read by the system upon archiving. The following is a summary of other fields that form part of the drawing border: Scale The primary scale of the drawing. (typical format is 1 =1-0 ) Old Dwg No - In some cases this is used as a cross reference to former drawing numbers, usually on older drawings. Revision Description Area: Revision No. - Revision numbers start at Rev 1 for the initial issue and archiving of a drawing. FEL Drawing revisions also start at rev 1.
SPEC /0/26 7/15 In the revision block, rev 1 is permanently displayed on the drawing. The next revision is displayed on the second line, and so on. The 3 most recent revisions are displayed on the remaining 3 lines in descending order automatically when entered using the Vale tag set. For pre-v drawings, if the revision block is full, the next revision can overwrite the earliest revision. Preliminary issues, during design development for example, use the REV number followed by a P to indicate Rev in progress. For example, during the process of Rev 3, the rev should be 3P to indicate "rev 3 in progress" a letter can also be added after that for multiple issues (example 3Pa, 3Pb, etc) this way, an official issue and archive is not required during design development stages. The drawing should also be stamped Preliminary. Job No. This is the Vale Engineering Job No. Description The first issue is usually Issued for Construction Subsequent revisions give a brief description of the actual modifications Date - The standard date format is year-month-day (yyyy-mm-dd) Note: The standard format for name entry is first initial and full surname. Drawn by The draftsperson s name is entered here Checked Drawing, Approved Design, and Reviewed Design are entered by the draftsperson, once the requirements of Vale Engineering Specification SPEC-0011 have been met. Reference Drawings - The main General Arrangement drawing lists the majority of the drawings that pertain to that arrangement. Other drawings should refer back to the main General Arrangement plus other pertinent drawings. Additional spaces for reference drawing listings are on hidden levels. General - All border information is entered using the Vale customized border utility. On older drawings (Version V7), colour coded enter-data-fields are used. Some older (V7) drawings do not have the approved and reviewed boxes in the revision block. (For these drawings the following cell is inserted into the drawing from Cell Lib DMENU Cell Name: REVBOX)
SPEC /0/26 / ISSUE BLOCKS AND COMPANY LOGOS The title block/revision block maintains revision 1 which is the original issue drawing information including the drawn, checked, approved, reviewed by names of the design team. As drawings are revised, any issue blocks or company logos that have been added, can be moved to the right of the drawing outside of the border in an organized fashion..0 DRAWING FILE GUIDELINES.1 FILE CREATION New drawings are created using the Vale seed file. This file when combined with the correct resource files, contains the standard levels, text styles, line styles, and dimension styles..2 FILE NAMING The electronic filename is derived from the drawing number as outlined previously in this Engineering Specification, and consists of the full drawing number, example: B DGN. Each drawing has an associated PDF. The file name must match the drawing; example: B DGN B PDF Older drawings that were created manually have been scanned to raster format with a.cit extension. These rasters are then inserted into vector drawings to become Hybrid drawings. The three associated components of a hybrid drawing must all have matching file names with applicable file extensions: example B DGN B CIT B PDF In the event that multiple revisions of the same drawing are being submitted for archive, files must be organized in a logical folder structure so that file names can be retained.
SPEC /0/26 9/15.3 DRAWING BORDER AND BLOCK FILL IN (MICROSTATION V) The drawing border is inserted as a cell from the cell library, at the appropriate scale. Do not drop (or explode) the border. Dropped borders are not compatible with the drawing archiving system and will be rejected and subject to re-submission. To fill in title block & border information in the V Microstation border, select the custom border info toolbar. Enter all information in the border info dialog box. Ensure that any customized drawing content does not conflict with the border or the border utility tool. Final drawings submitted for archive must not contain more than one title block. If using multiple models, do not insert title blocks in more than one model. The border level, Border Revision History Tags, must remain off and locked. Drawings in noncompliance may be rejected and subject to re-submission. When revising existing V7 vector and hybrid drawings, drawings should be worked on in V7 workmode within Microstation V. Upgrading to the current V border is not necessary..4 DRAWING BLOCK FILL IN (MICROSTATION V7 OR EARLIER) If modifications are required to existing Microstation V7 or earlier drawings, the drawing title block information must be entered using ENTER DATA FIELDS. These enter data fields are located on level 2. No other text elements are to be drawn on this level. A maximum of one line of 44 characters is provided for each of the Plant, Building, and title fields. Abbreviate if necessary but do not extend the number of characters or the number of lines. Fractions are not allowed in these fields. In the event that a border was previously dropped, DO NOT delete or copy these fields without maintaining the proper characteristics. Some enter data fields are colour coded to enable the Drawing Management System to read and edit these fields. 9.0 LEVELS Vale uses a custom DGN library containing defined common levels. Each level has an assigned name with attributes that are set by-level. Levels may be added in the DGN file as required TEXT Generally, all text size is to be 3/32" for 1:1 scale drawings and weight = 1. This is also the minimum size allowable. See drawing scale table. All text is to be in upper case using the predefined text styles relative to the drawing s active scale.
SPEC /0/26 10/15 Font All text must be written in Vale s modified font which is similar to MicroStation default font 3 except for a few character changes such as the "1" and the "I". Also a few keys have been re-defined in order to provide common symbols: - the vertical bar " " is used to display the diameter symbol - the back apostrophe " ` " is used to display the phase symbol - the ^ is used to display the degree symbol NOTE: do not use these special characters when filling the title block 11.0 CELL LIBRARIES Vale custom cell libraries contain a variety of cells for most disciplines and applications, including keyplans of the various Vale sites DRAWING SCALE All drawings must be drawn to scale. Choose a suitable scale that will provide clarity and sufficiently show the information while providing the required level of detail. Drawings such as flow diagrams, schematics and certain electrical-instrumentation drawings, use a 1:1 border scale. If more than one scale is used on a drawing, show the scale in the title of each view on the drawing. In such cases, insert the major scale in the title block followed by UNO (Unless Noted Otherwise). Where revisions cause a drawing to go out of scale, make all efforts to correct the drawing and not just the dimensions affected. When a not-to-scale area is necessary, identify each individual dimension affected as "N.T.S." Drawing content is drawn at full size. The scale of the inserted border will determine the drawing scale.
SPEC /0/26 11/15 The following is a list of typical acceptable drawing scales with associated scale factors. Also included is a list of text sizes associated with the various drawing scales TYPICAL CENTRAL ENGINEERING DRAWING SCALE (English Units Relative to Drawing Plot Size) Drawing Drawing Scale Text Height Scale (AS) When Plotted General Title 1 Full size 3/32 3/16 2 ½ full size 3/16 3/ 4 ¼ full size or 3 =1-0 3/ ¾ 1 ½ = 1-0 ¾ 1 ½ 12 1 = / 2 ¼ 16 ¾ = ½ 3 24 ½ = ¼ 4 ½ 32 3/ = ¼ = ½ /16 = / = /16 = = ¼ 1-10 ½ = ½ = / = = ¼ 9-4 1/ = ½ = ½ ELECTRICAL AND INSTRUMENTATION DRAWINGS For Electrical and Instrumentation, general line and text work to be as follows: - level = E and I (level 50) - weight = 1 - text size 3/32" - text font = 3 - grid or unit lock must be on 14.0 REFERENCE FILES During the course of the project design, reference files in Microstation may be used as required. However, upon archiving, all reference files must be merged into the drawing file.
SPEC /0/26 12/ RASTER FILES Older drawings, that were created manually, have been scanned to raster format with a.cit extension. The raster is then inserted into vector drawings to become Hybrid drawings:.dgn portion - vector file containing new work.cit portion - raster file containing old drawing In order to work on these drawings, Descartes (or a similar product) must be used within Microstation. First time revisions to these drawings require the following: Create a new vector file ".DGN" with same name as the raster file, scale the border appropriately to match the raster file, and attach the raster file to it. Scale the raster to suit and ensure the raster is square to the border. Move the raster title block portion of the border below the new vector border (See Fig. Below) and erase the remaining portions of the raster border. This is done to maintain historical data and the original drawing seal. Transfer, where legible, all original approval box names and dates, and reference drawing list, to new border. In the event that a raster file is at Rev 0, the first revision will be REV 1 and no revision history will be entered for Rev 0. Also add a notation above the title block stating where the drawing originated and the original drawing number. Example: Originator: ABC Engineering Dwg. No.: Originator: Vale Dwg. No.: DE-102 Do not alter the colour of the CIT as it must have good contrast (no halftone or grey scale) when checked-in to archive. Note: Raster files are used as background information only. All new information must be added in vector format. It is the responsibility of the draftsperson to clean up, edit, and enhance the raster file to ensure good presentation quality. The dimensional accuracy of the raster file is only as good as the accuracy of the original scanned drawing. The draftsperson is responsible to ensure the raster portion is scaled such that the dimensional information is presented as accurately as possible.
SPEC /0/26 13/15 Raster Title Block 16.0 USE OF EXCEL SPREADSHEETS IN DRAWINGS Excel is occasionally used to create charts or tables that can be inserted into drawing files. When inserting excel objects into Microstation, they must be inserted with the paste Embedded option selected. This is required so that the table is editable in the future DRAWING ARCHIVE Vale drawings and vendor drawings are archived in the Drawing Management System upon issuing the drawing for construction. All historical paper drawings have been scanned and are also archived in the system. Viewing and printing facilities for archived drawings are available in the printroom area of Central Engineering, and throughout the plant facilities. Files are checked-out of the system for revision. While checked-out, the file is still viewable, but locked out for editing until revisions are completed and the file is checked-in. Drawing numbers are reserved through the Drawing Management System (jdms). Consultants must request numbers as per SPEC All drawings must have an associated PDF file for archiving. The PDF must be electronically generated from the native CAD file and be a true representation of the drawing. The PDF must also be in monochrome format, landscape orientation, and must be legible when plotted at full size. Drawing format and title block information must be entered according to this specification. Upon archiving, the system reads data from the file properties which is used for document searches. If the
SPEC /0/26 14/15 data is not in the correct format or incomplete, the system will reject the document at check-in and will display an error message. Consultants must use the Drawing Checker Utility Tool as outlined in SPEC REFERENCE DOCUMENTATION The following documents are related to this specification and shall be used to their latest revision: SPEC SPEC SPEC SPEC-0001 SPEC-0003 SPEC-0004 SPEC-0005 SPEC-0006 SPEC-0007 SPEC-000 SPEC-0014 SPEC-0016 Engineering Services General Requirements Drawing Control System - Requirements for Consultants Working with the Vale Standard Drawing Border Plant Layout & Design General Requirements Technical Requirements - General Technical Requirements - Flow Diagrams Technical Requirements - Concrete Technical Requirements - Structural Steel Technical Requirements - Mechanical Technical Requirements - Electrical/Instrumentation Requirements for the Creation of DWG Files (AutoCAD) Working with the Vale Border (In-House)
