2 UL Selector and Submittal Generator User Guide The new Hilti UL System Selector and Firestop Submittal Generator tool is available on Hilti Online in the Technical Library. This new tool will allow our customers to quickly identify the appropriate firestop systems and directly include them into a submittal. The advanced list of filters allows the user to search beyond the typical search criteria and address secondary attributes that differentiate Hilti s product performance. Smoke, sound, water, and movement characteristics are now growing concerns in the construction industry and we have the tools to help supply the customer the proper solution. 4 Finding the UL System Selector on HOL Go to and click on the Technical Library button. Click on the Firestop system details tab. 4

5 Finding the UL System Selector on HOL The page will appear with the following: 1 1. The search box 2. The filter list 3. The systems list 3 2 5

6 Searching for Systems While searching for systems, all matches will appear in the systems list. Each system listing includes details for the system as well as a Download document button which will open the Full UL Detail PDF version of the system. 6

7 Searching for Systems For more system details and downloading options, click the More info button. In the expanded window, more details are shown as well as links to download the alternate Trade Detail Drawings and AutoCAD Drawing Files. 7

8 Searching by a Known System Number Enter the UL system number in the search box and click on the magnifying glass. The system will recognize the following formats; C-AJ-1226, CAJ1226, or CAJ If you enter only a portion of the system s name the program will populate all systems that start with that name Example: WL1 populates WL1054, WL1056, WL1058 FA5 populates FA5009, FA5015, FA5016 The matching system(s) will appear in the UL System pane. 8

9 Searching by Application Criteria Select either the Joint or Penetration option to view all of the filters associated with that system type. 9

10 Searching by Application Criteria To view the options for a filter, click on the filter name. In the drop down list, click on a filter option to activate it. Only the systems that match the option selected will appear. 10

11 Searching by Application Criteria When a filter is activated, the option that is selected will replace the filter name in the filter list. To remove a filter or to change filter options, select the option and click on the original filter name at the top of the drop down list. 11

12 Searching by Application Criteria Options that appear grey have all matching systems filtered out by an active filter. Remove the previous filter to reactivate the options. To clear all active filters, click Deselect all. 12

The time a firestop system prevents the passage of flame through an opening and successfully passes the hose stream test as determined by ASTM E-814 and UL A continuous membrane, either vertical or horizontal, such as a wall or floor assembly that is designed and constructed with a specified fire resistance rating to limit the spread of fire and restrict the movement of smoke. 14 Understanding the Filters - Penetration Term Website Filter Effect Definition Penetrating Item Minimum Annular Space Maximum Annular Space Displays only the systems that include penetrating items. Displays systems that match the selected minimum annular space. Displays systems that match the selected maximum annular space. Any item passing completely through a wall or floor, such as pipes, conduits, cables, etc. The region, measured in a straight line, between the penetrants, or between the outer most portion of the penetrants and the inside periphery of a circular opening or the sides of a rectangular opening. Example: a pipe with an outside diameter of 4.5 centered in a 6 diameter hole has an annular space of (6 4.5) / 2 = 3/4. See Minimum Annular Space above. Sleeve Insulation Type Maximum Percent Fill T-Rating Water Rating Displays only the systems that include the selected sleeve option. Displays only the systems that include the selected insulation type. Displays systems that match the selected maximum percent fill. Displays only the systems that include the selected T-Rating. Displays only the systems that include the selected water rating. Metal insert that lines the inner periphery of a penetration. Thermal or acoustic insulating material surrounding a pipe. The cross-sectional area of an opening that is occupied by a penetrating item(s). Typically found in UL systems containing cables. Percent fill may be calculated with the following formulas: Percent Fill (% f ) = (A w / A o ) x 100 N = number of wires Area of Wire (A w ) = [3.14 x (r c2 )] x N r c = radius of wire Area of opening (A o ) = 3.14 x (r o2 ) r o = radius of opening The time for the temperature of the unexposed surface of the firestop system or any penetrating item to rise 325 F above its initial temperature as determined by ASTM E-814 and UL An optional rating for through penetrations firestop systems. Determines the effectiveness of a firestop system to restrict the flow of water. Class 1 rated firestops have been shown to resist up to 3 feet of water column for 72 hours. 14

A joint system is a specific construction consisting of adjacent wall and/or floor assemblies and the materials designed to help prevent the spread of fire through a linear opening between the wall and/or floor. The maximum joint width allowed as measured at time of installation. Non structural outer walls of a building that do not carry any dead load weight from the building. The ability of a firestop joint system to provide movement. Usually provided as a percentage of the maximum joint width at time of installation. 15

16 Understanding the Logos Moisture Proper Installation Movement Smoke Sound Hilti firestop products have the ability to withstand the effects of water and moisture not only in the completed, occupied building, but also during the construction phase. UL Systems that contain the water icon are Class 1 W-rated firestops that have been shown to resist up to 3 feet of water column for 72 hours. In addition, Hilti products are also mold and mildew resistant and have been tested per ASTM G21. All firestop products must be installed as shown on the UL system to ensure the product behaves as expected in a fire. Many of Hilti s innovative products have been specially designed to ease the installation process for the Contractor. These innovations provide both productivity gains for the Contractor and peace of mind that the installation has been done right. Products that contain the easy to install icon bring additional benefits in the installation process. These products include the CP 653 Speed Sleeve, CP 680 Cast-in Firestop Device, CFS-DID Firestop Drop-in Device, and CFS-BL Firestop Block. Construction joints and the service components (i.e. pipes, ducts, etc.) inside of a building can move or shift over time. This movement can be a result of temperature fluctuations, wind loads, vibration or earthquakes, etc. Hilti has many UL Systems for construction joints that allow for movement. The movement capabilities for Hilti firestop joint systems can be easily accessed by referencing the Movement Capability field after clicking the More info link. Additionally, Hilti has tested our through penetration firestop products to understand how they perform after a seismic event (i.e. after pipe movement has occurred). Products that contain the movement icon have shown the best performance in the simulated seismic firestop tests conducted in the Hilti research laboratory. The quasi-static cyclic loads according to the FEMA 461 protocol were applied directly to the penetrant. The tests revealed that the Hilti pre-formed devices such as the CP 653 Speed Sleeve, CP 680 Cast-in Firestop Device, CFS-DID Firestop Drop-in Device, and CFS-BL Firestop Block maintained their firestopping performance in these conditions. The smoke and gas tightness of firestop products is of utmost importance in the event of fire as it may save lives. Additionally, products designed to impede the passage of air also plays an important role in the thermal insulation of buildings and the prevention of infectious disease in critical buildings such as hospitals. UL Systems that contain the air tightness icon have undergone the optional testing to measure the rate of air leakage through the assembly. This measurement is shown as a L-rating on the UL system and is typically measured as volumetric flow rate in units of cfm/sq. ft. (or cfm/device) for through penetrations and cfm/lin. ft. for joints. Sound insulation in buildings are of great significance to the health and well-being of the occupants. Specific regulations exist for certain buildings such as schools, hotels, and offices. Many Hilti firestop products have been tested and have a sound transmission class rating (STC rating). Products that contain the sound icon help reduce the passage of sound through the application and have a STC rating available. 16

17 Creating a Submittal To add systems to a submittal, click the box next to the system name. Once all of the desired systems have been added, click on the Go to Submittal Generator button. 17

18 Creating a Submittal In the first section of the submittal generator, all of the selected systems appear. Next to each system, there are boxes that can be used to remove systems from the submittal. 18

19 Creating a Submittal Clicking the Add Systems button will save the currently selected systems and return to the UL Selector. The second section contains the products listed in the selected systems. Next to each product, there are boxes that can be used to remove the products documents from the submittal. 19

20 Creating a Submittal The third section contains the submittal s general options for the cover page and page numbers. The Hilti Cover Page option can be used to add a form which is filled in with submittal-specific information or a custom cover page can be uploaded. 20

21 Creating a Submittal The Include Page Numbers option will determine if page numbers are placed at the bottom of all the documents in the submittal. To complete a submittal, click on either the Generate Submittal button to create a PDF of the submittal or the Save as favorite button to save the submittal. 21

22 Saving and Recalling Submittals In order to save a submittal, you must first be logged into your account. After clicking the Save as favorite button, enter the submittal name and click Save as favorite. 22

23 Saving and Recalling Submittals Submittals can then be accessed from the Favorites lists in My Account by clicking on My submittals. From here, saved submittals can be reopened by clicking on the submittal name. 23

24 Saving and Recalling Submittals This will return to the Submittal Generator page where adjustments can be made to the submittal. Other options available from the My submittals page are renaming the submittal, deleting the submittal, or creating the submittal PDF using the same settings. 24

Q: How do I create a product based submittal without including the UL systems? A: To create a submittal that includes only products, use the general Submittal Generator at Using this application, submittals can be built for firestop, anchor systems, and direct fastening Hilti products. Q: How do I load additional documents into the submittal (like an Engineering Judgment form)? A: To load additional documents, create and save the submittal as a PDF. Next, using Adobe Acrobat, you are able to insert the additional pages. Q: How do I create a submittal using the Trade version of the system instead of the Full UL detail version? A: To change the Full UL details versions with Trade versions, create and save the submittal using the Full UL detail versions as a PDF. Next, download each system s Trade version form the UL Selector page. Then, using Adobe Acrobat, you are able to replace the Full UL detail version pages with the Trade versions. 25

26 Frequently Asked Questions Q: To save submittals, do I use my login information from the old submittal generator? A: No, the new submittal generator is part of the Hilti Online website. This means you will just have to login into your Hilti Online account in order to save and recall submittals. Q: Are my saved submittals on the old submittal generator transferred to the new one? A: Unfortunately, the old submittals cannot be transferred to the new system. However, the new Trade filter has pre-packaged groups of typical UL systems for common trades. 26
