1 QP6 Lessons posted Page 1 Creating a Panel Quilt Quilt-Pro 6 I have seen some really beautiful fabric panels that would look absolutely gorgeous in a quilt. Panel quilts can be made quickly or can be as complex as other types of quilts. They make wonderful quick gifts for family or to give to charity. We will be using this panel from Timeless Treasures called "Abstract Butterfly" by Chong-a Hwang and is in the Awaken Collection. To use this same panel, already edited, in Quilt-Pro, read the download instructions below: But do feel free to use your own panel. Quick Tips about Panel images Panel images should be placed in \Documents\Quilt-Pro\Photos. Cropping and sizing the image (not the actual fabric) is crucial to success. You want to delete any white area around the image, cut off the salvage, and show only the portion of the panel that will be visible in the quilt. When using Quilt-Pro the idea is to maintain a clear but small image (approx. 500K or so in JPG file format] so that it doesn't use up too much memory. Measure the fabric panel but do not include seam allowances so you can determine the correct size for the Fabric image. The image should be in proportion to the actual size of the panel.. For example: If the size of the Panel is 24x40, then good size for this panel image would be: 10"x 16.67" or 8" X 13.33" Your photo editing program will have cropping features and resize the image. You can use the smaller image because Quilt-Pro will expand the image to fit, as long as the image is proportioned correctly. 2 QP6 Lessons posted Page 2 To begin our lesson, download the panel we'll be working with today. This image has already been edited for your use. Here is how to download it: Click this link to view it in your browser: Abstract Butterfly. When it appears, it will look like the image to the right. Right click the Panel and choose "Save Image As" or "Save Target As" or similar. Save the file to: Documents\Quilt-Pro\Photos.

3 QP6 Lessons posted Page 3 Now, let's create out quilt. Start by clicking File menu/ New/Quilt, or press Ctrl-N. Layout tab: Layout Type: Straight Blocks Block Placement: Single Block Size tab: Block Counts: Across 1, Down 1 Block Sizes: Width Height Keep Proportion: Unchecked

6 QP6 Lessons posted Page 6 As you will recall on page 2, we downloaded the Abstract Butterfly panel image and saved it to: Documents\Quilt-Pro\Photos. Click on the Photo icon on the toolbar. When it appears, click the down arrow and select My Photos. Click once to select the TT-Awaken image and then click the large blank area in the center of the quilt. Do not attempt to drag and drop the image into the quilt. It won't work. We will be using the Block Library to search for suitable block for this quilt. Since I want this to be an easy quilt to make, let's see what we come up with when we search using the word Butterfly. Click the Block Library on the toolbar and type Butterfly in the search bar, circled in the image. Click Search. Let's select Butterfly #2 and click once on the cornerstone or other blank block surrounding the panel. Then using the Flip Vertical tool, click on the blocks on the top row of the butterflies so that they all face the same way.

7 QP6 Lessons posted Page 7 Quilt-Pro 5 Open the Fabric Library on the toolbar. Go through the color section looking for fabrics that will go with the panel. When you find on you like, select the fabric, then click Add to Favorites button. When you have added several fabrics to Favorites that you would like to try, click the Favorites button to see your selection. Color as desired. If you would like all blocks colored the same, check the box Affect All box on the status bar. If you would like the Blocks colored differently, as I have colored them here, keep the Affect All box unchecked.
