3 Standard Ceilings Design Introduction Boral Plasterboard have been designed to provide fire resistance ratings of FRL 30/30/30, FRL 60/60/60, FRL 90/90/90 and FRL 120/120/120. Systems are also available to provide 30, 60, 90 or 120 mins. resistance to incipient spread of fire. Ceilings can be constructed under roofs of Tile, Aluminium or Steel Profiled Section fixed to battens on a steel or timber framework or under floors constructed of at least 12mm Plywood, Timber or Particle Board fixed to a steel or timber supporting frame. Ceiling systems may be fixed as either a Direct Fixed System, Suspended System, or Direct Clipped (Furred) System. Note: Where illustrations in this manual show a Suspended Ceiling System, a Direct Fixed or Furred System may also be used. These ceiling construction details are not suitable for external ceilings. Construction Features Ceiling can be curved to a minimum radius of 6000mm. Ceiling can be constructed to a pitch of up to 70 degrees from the Horizontal. Ceiling systems can incorporate the following approved features: Access Panels, Bulkheads, Light & Luminaire fittings, Plumbing Pipe penetrations, Power Cable penetrations, Loaded penetrations, Control Joints, Protection to Steel & Timber Beams, Changes in ceiling slope direction and a variety of Perimeter Details. Thermal or acoustic insulation (max. 3kg/m 2 ) may be placed above ceiling. 4 4 Standard Ceilings Design General Construction Details Movement joints should be put at building construction joint locations. Control joints should be spaced at not more than 12 metre max. centres in either direction (15 metre centres where there is perimeter relief). Refer to "Joints" for details. Specifiers should be aware of the likelihood of frame movement due to structural, thermal and seasoning effects on direct fixed plasterboard ceilings. Where necessary specify a furred system to minimise the risk of ceiling damage due to these effects. Caution: Boral Plasterboard ceiling systems are not designed to support the weight of maintenance personnel, additional plant or storage of goods. Materials 16mm or 13mm Boral recessed edge. Boral Plasterboard Jointing Compound (as preferred from the Boral Plasterboard Jointing Compound range). Boral Plasterboard Cornice 55mm, 75mm & 90mm if required, applied using Boral Plasterboard Cornice Adhesive or Cornice Adhesive Mid Set. Perforated paper tape. Approved fire-rated sealant for caulking gaps at ceiling perimeters. Boral Cornice Adhesive. Screws and nails as specified. Rivets (all steel). Refer to Safety Data Sheets, available from Boral Plasterboard Sales Offices, or the container labelling, when handling relevant products. All materials used in the construction of Boral Plasterboard ceiling systems must be carefully stored and protected on the construction site. Plasterboard is to be stacked flat and protected from moisture. Boral must not be used where it will be exposed to excessive moisture. In addition, damaged plasterboard sheets and accessory materials must not be used. Fasteners Screws All screws are to AS corrosion class 1 and are defined as follows: Type S is a double start, needle point, bugle head gypsum screw for fixing to steel gauges of up to 0.80mm BMT. Type D is a double start, drill point, bugle head gypsum screw for fixing to steel gauges from 0.80mm to 2.00mm BMT. Type W is a single start, needle point, bugle head gypsum screw for fixing to hardwood and softwood framing. In some instances double start screws are permissible (refer to Boral Plasterboard for details). Type L is a single start, needle point, bugle head gypsum screw for fixing plasterboard to plasterboard. Note that correct screw length is critical when fastening to resilient furring channel to avoid acoustic bridging. Nails Although nail lengths specified are minimum, care should be taken when using longer nails to avoid bending in hardwoods or popping of plasterboard with unseasoned timber. Fastener Selection The following tables show the correct selection of screws and nails for the construction of Boral Plasterboard ceiling systems. Furring channel and framing supports to be taken to and provided within 50mm of ceiling perimeter - min 15mm end clearance to walls. Suspension Systems Attach suspension rods to suspension rod brackets that are anchored to structural framing or concrete soffit, at typically 1200mm centres in each direction. Note: Each suspension rod bracket fastening must be capable of supporting a weight of 143kg plus the self load of the system and pressure loads. Attach suspension clips to top cross rails, and fit suspension clips to rods. Adjust the rails to a true and level plane. Position furring channels at 600mm maximum centres (see note) and attach to top cross rails with a locking clip at each intersection. Join lengths of furring channel with furring channel joiners, ensuring the joins are staggered. Extra suspension components must be provided to support light fittings, bulkheads and other fixtures. Spans and spacings may be reduced if required. Direct Clipped (Furred) Systems Position furring channels at 600mm maximum centres (see note) and attach channels to structural framing with direct fixing clips at typically 1200mm centres, or to concrete soffit with anchor clips fastened to soffit at typically 1200mm centres. Ensure that furring channels are fixed to a true and level plane. Longer spans may be used - refer to Manufacturer's details. Direct Fixed Systems Where fixing direct to timber or steel framing without furring channel, framework should not exceed 600mm spacing (see note). Spans and spacings may be reduced if required. Note: Furring channel spacing to be 450mm for 10mm Standard Core Plasterboard. Plasterboard Application Plasterboard may be fixed with nails, screws or a combination of adhesive and fasteners. A combination of adhesive and fasteners is the preferred method for general application. Fix Boral Plasterboard across the Furring Channel, Timber or Steel framing. Butt or end joints not formed on framing members should be back-blocked as described under "Back-blocking". Tape and finish with preferred Boral Plasterboard jointing system. Adhesive/ Fastener Fixing Apply Boral Plasterboard Stud Adhesive to framing members in daubs measuring 25mm diameter by 15mm high. Space daubs of adhesive at 230mm maximum centres. Keep daubs approximately 200mm away from the edges of the sheets and the nail or screw fixing points. Under slow-drying conditions, keep Boral Plasterboard sheets firm against the adhesive daubs for at least 48 hours. Use temporary blocks fastened through plasterboard to framing members. Be sure to fix Boral Plasterboard within thirty minutes of applying adhesive. This will avoid skin forming on the adhesive. For the number of nails or screws required, and their fixing points, refer to the following tables and illustrations. Keep Boral Plasterboard sheets in firm contact with framing member while nails are being driven. Drive nail heads slightly below the surface of the sheet without puncturing the face linerboard. Along the perimeter of sheets, space nails at between 10mm minimum and 16mm maximum away from the edges and ends of the sheet. Skew-nailing is not permitted. For single nailing, space nails at 200mm maximum centres. For double nailing, space nails at 300mm maximum centres with single nails or single screws at perimeter only. Fixing With Screws Only Space screws at 300mm maximum centres in field of board and 200mm maximum centres on end joints (staggered). Space screws at 10mm - 16mm from the edges and ends. When screw-fixing single layers of Boral Plasterboard sheets: Hold plasterboard sheets firmly in place against the framing members while driving in the screws. Adjust screw gun correctly so as to drive the screw heads below the surface of the sheet without puncturing the face linerboard. Press tip of screw firmly into the face linerboard before driving it home. Always drive screws with the shank at right angles to the face of the sheets. Wherever possible always start from the centre of the sheet towards the outer edges. Position screws on adjacent edges opposite each other. 42 Non 42 Standard Ceilings Design Back-blocking Back-blocking is a mandatory fixing requirement where specified in the Australian Standard AS/NZS :1997. Failure to provide back-blocking installed as per AS/NZS :1997 may result in liability for any associated costs relating to maintenance and/or rectification caused by jointing defects. Back-blocking substantially reduces call-backs, in particular for cracking and peaking joints. Recessed Joints in Ceilings Any area containing three or more recessed joints must be back-blocked as follows (see Figure 1): Cut back-blocking pieces from Boral Plasterboard sheet to sizes no less than 200mm wide and in lengths that will fit loosely between the framing members. Prepare Boral Plasterboard Cornice Adhesive in a clean container with sufficient water to make a stiff paste of smooth consistency. Apply adhesive over the full face of the backblocking pieces using a notched spreader to form beads of 6mm x 6mm at approximately 20mm centres and at right angles to the joint. Fix Boral Plasterboard ceiling sheet transverse to framing members, placing the back-blocks centrally along the full length of the sheet's edge. Fix the next sheets immediately after the blocks are in place. Back-blocks in ceilings may be cemented into position from within the roof cavity using a more fluid adhesive mix and pouring it onto the top of the ceiling join before seating the back-blocks onto the adhesive. Back-blocking Ceilings Under Floors and Low-Pitched Roofs This can be carried out from the floor below, one step at a time as follows (see Figure 2): Fix the first Boral Plasterboard sheet. Cut the next sheet. Apply Boral Plasterboard Cornice Adhesive to back-blocks and place them between framing members along the full length of the sheet already fixed. Immediately after all blocks are in place, install the next sheet. Continue as above across the entire ceiling area. When complete, and the adhesive has thoroughly set, apply the flush-jointing. Back-blocks in place Boral Plasterboard ceiling Wall Ceiling joist or bottom chord of roof truss Figure 2. Back-blocking pieces of Boral Plasterboard sheet 200mm wide min. glued with Cornice Adhesive Back-blocking Butt Joints Back-block butt joints as follows (see Figure 3): Fix ceiling sheets with ends butted neatly together. The butt joint should fall within 50mm of the mid-span point between framing members. Use battens and packers to support and deflect the sheet ends upwards about 2mm. 43 Non Standard Ceilings Design Plasterboard Back-block Rafter or joist Cornice adhesive Temporary battens Packing strip Temporary nailing Figure 3. Back-blocking Dos & Don'ts Back-blocking must be installed at the fixing stage. Joints must not be set prior to backblocking. Do not use plaster in its advanced setting state or any dry mix compound for backblocking. Dry or partly dry compounds combined with ceiling temperatures may cause premature dry-out and reduced bond. Ensure back-blocking is completely dry prior to the taping process. Do not use stud adhesive for back-blocking. Back-blocking strips should not be tight between framing members. Architectural Specification 43 Boral Plasterboard Ceilings shown in the relevant drawings shall consist of materials supplied by Boral Plasterboard, fixed and finished in accordance with the instructions contained in Boral Plasterboard Technical Manuals and in TecSYS - a comprehensive technical catalogue on CD-ROM (see back cover for details). As drawings are updated from time to time, users are advised to check drawing currency before adopting the procedures and details noted thereon.

49 QuietZone Ceiling Systems Introduction Introduction The QuietZone systems have been designed to reduce unwanted noise from specific areas of a home. There are three QuietZone ceiling systems designed to suit varying budgets and design considerations - these three systems are identified as "Quiet", "Quieter" and "Quietest". Building a QuietZone ceiling requires a little more care and attention to detail than standard systems. Each component in a QuietZone System must be securely fixed, necessary services strategically placed and all plasterboard perimeter edges and openings adequately sealed. Note: QuietZone is a registered trademark of Amatek Limited trading as Insulation Solutions. Boral Acoustic Ceiling Mount The Boral Acoustic Ceiling Mount is used in the QuietZone systems and provides a cost effective solution to impact sound insulation for ceilings direct fixed or suspended to either concrete soffits, timber floor joists, roof purlins and the like. The Acoustic Ceiling Mount significantly reduces transmission of impact sound from many common sources including: footfalls; rain; and equipment Other typical applications for the Boral Acoustic Ceiling Mount are in multi-residential apartment construction, cinemas, and areas below a plant room. Advantages Easy and quick to install; Suspended application does not need additional fixings; Acoustic Ceiling Mount can be slid along the top cross rail which allows for easy repositioning; Minimises low frequency thumps generated from footfalls on timber floors; Fully tested; Rubber Element is colour coded for easy identification of load range; and High load capacity minimises number of Acoustic Ceiling Mounts required per square metre. Installation Ceiling Support Structure Furring Channel Clip Rubber Element showing colour coding dot Fixing Screw (with 25mm dia. Steel washer where fire rating required) Rondo Furring Channel 49 The Boral Acoustic Ceiling Mount is designed for use in Rondo's Key-Lock Ceiling Suspension System. Refer to the Rondo catalogue for the spanning and spacing options for furring channels and primary rails. Direct Fix Application Components Furring Channel Clip; Rubber Element; and Screw (supplied by others): x min. 65 mm Type 17 roof screw into timber; - 12 or 14 gauge x min. 45 mm drill point roofing screw into light gauge steel; or - Tapcon screw into concrete. Procedure Assemble the mount as shown in the following illustration. 1. Screw fix the mount via the central hole in the rubber element. For fire-rated ceilings, a 25 mm diameter x 2 mm steel washer is required under the fastener head. 2. Use a suitable power tool with an appropriate hex driver and tighten the fastener to a point where there is no compression of the rubber element. Check the pull-out capacity of fastener to ensure correct size is selected. 3. Clip furring channel into the Furring Channel Clip.

Rondo Top Cross Rail Furring Channel Clip Rubber Element showing colour coding dot Interchange Clip Rondo Furring Channel 1. Clip the Interchange Clip into the Top Cross Rail. 2. Clip furring channel into the Furring Channel Clip. Load Ratings For both applications, the rubber element comes in a variety of load bearing capacities and is colour coded accordingly. The appropriate element must be used to support the weight of plasterboard being used in the ceiling. As each layer of plasterboard is fixed to the furring channel, the rubber element will deflect under the load. A maximum deflection of 5 mm will result when the maximum load, as indicated in the following table, is reached. Allowance should be made for deflection when setting out ceiling heights.
