5 Sensations A publishing company is preparing a special evening event to launch a book called The theme of the book explores the senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. The event will be held in a public building in your area. The publishers wish to commission work for the event that reflects the theme and promotes the book. Your proposals must be presented in a format that clearly shows how your designs will meet the requirements of the brief.

14 Observational drawings: wet/3d CHOICES: Watercolour paints (use watercolour paper) Acrylic paint (work directly into sketchbook) Coloured inks (work directly into sketchbook) Print; lino/screen/poly-tile/mono (work onto separate coloured/white paper) Collage (work directly into sketchbook) Clay Cardboard Wire REMEMBER: Record from an object you have brought in or a photograph you have taken (not from the internet!). Photograph the object you have brought in. Sketch out in faint pencil first. Show a range of tones/textures/weights of line

15 Traditional Recording: Colour Materials Acrylic Consider different approaches to recording in acrylic paint. Do you want to blend the colours and tones seamlessly or do you want to show thick, textural paint marks or perhaps apply the paint in dabs and dots. Water colour Consider different approaches to recording in watercolour paint. Do you want strong, rich colours that are crisp and precise or do you want a more washed effect. Could you use coloured pencils for detail?

16 Traditional Recording: Grey Scale & Monochromatic Grey Scale Working in grey scale requires you to use only the light and dark values of black, so white through to grey and then onto black. Monochromatic A monochromatic study would require you to work in the colour values of just one colour. You can use white through to black and all the shades in-between of a single colour.

18 Traditional Recording: Colour Materials Collage Collage is a great way of recording observations, you could use magazine clippings or different coloured and textured paper or even your own painted papers. Coloured Ink You can use coloured drawing inks in a number of ways and with a number of different drawing tools. Use a dip pen, paint brush or even bamboo sticks to draw with. You can blend inks and even outline with fine liner when dry
