1 City University of Hong Kong Information on a Course offered by Division of Building Science & Technology with effect from Semester A in 2012/201 Part I Course Title: Course Code: Course Duration: Building Communication BST Semester Credit Units: Level: Medium of Instruction: Prerequisites: Precursors: Equivalent Courses: Exclusive Courses: A1 English BST11216, BST11781, BST11111 Part II 1. Course Aims: This course aims to develop students ability to interpret construction drawings and technical information; and enable students to prepare different types of drawings for use in the construction industry. 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: No. CILOs Weighting* 1. Interpret different types of drawings, conventions and technical information, and manual drafting techniques used in building 1 communication. 2. Prepare free-hand sketches for elements and drawing of building. 1. Produce plans, sections, elevations and projections of a simple building using manual drafting skills. 4. Produce 2D drawings of a simple building using computer-aided drafting skills and techniques, and organize drawing files efficiently to facilitate management and sharing of drawing information. *Weightings are assigned to the CILOs according to their relative importance to the course ( = most important).
2 . Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) (Indicative of likely activities and tasks designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs. Final details will be provided to students in their first week of attendance in this course) Teaching pattern: Lecture/Tutorial/Studio/Laboratory mix: hours per week 9 Studio hours (21 hours Design Studio, 18 hours Computer Studio) The teaching and learning activities are conducted in a small group of students in the design and computer studios so that the briefings, demonstrations, illustrations and guidance can be provided to students when they practise the drafting skills. The teaching activity is by means of demonstration to illustrate various drafting principles and techniques to students. Sample drawings from real-life projects and manuals are used to exemplify the application of drafting techniques and drawing conventions in practice. Immediately after or concurrently with the demonstration, students are required to practice the manual or computer drafting skills under the supervision of the instructor(s) during the studio session. Through such teaching and learning activities, immediate feedback on individual student s drafting technique can be given. To strengthen and motivate students learning, home assignments in the form of case-based projects are given to students so that they can apply the drafting skills in different drawings. Demonstration /briefing In-class practice Group discussion Contact hours CILO 1 6 CILO 2 6 CILO 9 CILO 4 18 Total 9 4. Assessment Tasks/Activities (Indicative of likely activities and tasks designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs. Final details will be provided to students in their first week of attendance in this course) Coursework: 100% (In-class-assignment - 10%, Home Assignment 70%, and Quiz on computer drafting 20%) Note: A student must obtain a minimum mark of 5 in all in-class exercises and home assignments and an overall mark of 40 to pass the course. In-class Exercise Case-based Home Assignment Quiz on Computer Drafting Weighting* CILO 1 1 CILO 2 1 CILO CILO 4 Assessment 10% 70% 20% 100% Percentage *Weightings are assigned to the CILOs according to their relative importance to the course ( = most important). 2
3 CILO No. CILO 1 & CILO 2 CILO CILO 4 Type of Assessment Tasks/Activities Coursework will contribute to 100% of the overall marks of this course based on the following three components: - In-class exercises; - Case-based home assignments; and - Quiz. These CILOs are assessed by one of the coursework components manual drafting through two assignments which require students to search for technical information and produce technical drawings and details by means of manual drafting techniques. The first assignment will require students to use manual drafting technique to convert the designated figure(s) into technical drawings/sketches and/or floor layout. The second assignment will require students to represent a building/ premises using different types of technical drawings. The third assignment is to convert sketches into different types of technical drawings including elevation, section, plan and construction detail through manual drafting techniques. This CILO is assessed by one home assignment and one in-class quiz respectively. The assignment will require students to use computer software (i.e. AutoCAD) to convert building plans and details into computer aided drawings. For quiz, students are required to use computer software (i.e. AutoCAD) to convert given plans and/or details into computer aided drawings within a specified period. Weighting 10% 15% 5% 20% 20% In-class exercises are carried out by students during studio sessions under the supervision of the instructor(s) and consist of a series of drafting exercises covering free-hand sketches for CILOs 1 to 2. In the exercise, students are required to prepare manual drawings based on a set of given design information. Case-based home assignments consist of manual drafting assignment and one AutoCAD assignment covering CILOs 2 and 4 respectively. These drafting assignments are in a larger scale, requiring students to prepare four to five drawings based on hypothetical or real-life cases. Students have to carry out some studies and collect additional information in order to prepare his/her design in the form of technical drawings. Assessment is based on student s drafting skills and design solutions. Quiz is to assess students ability in using the AutoCAD computer software to produce quality technical drawings under an examination environment.
4 5. Grading of Student Achievement: (Refer to Grading of Courses in the Academic Regulations ) Standard (A+, A, A- F). Student achievement will be graded according to their performance in assessment tasks/activities. Details will be provided to students in class. The graphic presentation is effectively executed and well structured. Able to demonstrate and accomplish both manual and computer drafting Excellent A-, A, A+ principles, practice and skills. The student uses clear, accurate and appropriate skills and techniques. Most CLIOs are executed outstandingly with certain degrees of creativity. Very Good B+ Well executed and structured graphic presentation with clear ideas and well-managed and competent techniques. Some problems with use of both manual and computer techniques and/or delivery, but still being able to deliver most key ideas and skills and most part of the scope covered with in-depth execution. Major CLIOs are well-executed with certain degree of creativity. Good B-, B, Well handled graphic presentation with good level of competency. Some problems with use of both manual and computer techniques and/or delivery, but still being able to deliver most key ideas and most part of the scopes covered with good execution, but these do not cause major difficulties in graphic interpretation Many key ideas delivered and most part of the works covered demonstrate good understanding Adequate C-, C, C+ Fair-prepared graphic presentations. with a certain degree of lack of understanding of CILOs. Fulfil a fair degree of coursework and need a certain degree of development of skills and application of principles and theories. Marginal D May have prepared, but have some fairly major problems with graphic delivery. Fail to address most scopes of CILOs. Miss many key points of the techniques and principles of graphic application and skills are emerging only. and interpretation and not satisfactorily fulfil the objectives, learning outcomes of course and projects Failure F Execution and workmanship of graphic presentation is far from satisfactory. Poorly prepared and shows very little understanding of CILOs. Unable to fulfil assignment and course aims and learning outcomes. Works are in the beginning and preliminary stage. Part III Keyword Syllabus Building Communication Introduction (tools and requirements for production of the media for building communication) Manual drafting Basic techniques (drafting tools, drawing papers, scale, lettering, line types and line weights, types of drawings, material symbols and title block) Manual drafting Freehand sketch.
