1 Syllabus Drafting and Design 1A Overview This one-semester course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to help you understand the various techniques, standards, and tools used in drafting and design. This course has 14 lessons and 5 Activities. Each lesson contains one or more Activities. The lessons cover the following topics: The first two lessons discuss the history of drawing and design and introduce you to the fundamentals of design. The next two lessons are about various drafting tools and drawing reproduction methods. The next six lessons discuss the various standards, symbols, and techniques used in drafting and design. The next four lessons discuss computer-aided design and drafting, and describe constructions of various geometric shapes. You will submit the documents to your teacher, and you will grade your work in the Activities by comparing them with sample responses. Each lesson also has a multiple-choice mastery test. A multiple-choice end-of-semester test completes the course. The Activities (submitted to the teacher) and the Activities (self-checked) are major components of this course. They will guide your learning as you work through this course. Goals This course will help you meet the following goals: Understand the fundamentals of design. Identify various architectural lines and their uses in drafting. Familiarize yourself with architectural lettering and freehand sketching. Understand the various standards, symbols, and conventions used in drafting. Explore the various tools and options available in computer-aided design software programs. Learn to create various geometric shapes and understand the development and intersection of solids EDMENTUM, INC.

2 Prerequisite Skills Drafting and Design 1A is a beginner's course and does not have specific prerequisites. Nevertheless, these fundamental skills will be helpful: basic computer skills ability to understand basic science basic math knowledge ability to visualize and apply creativity and innovation ability to structure and process information General Skills To participate in this course, you should be able to do the following: Perform basic operations and use drawing tools with word processing software, such as Microsoft Word. Perform online research using various search engines and library databases. Communicate through and participate in discussion boards. For a complete list of general skills that are required for participation in online courses, refer to the Prerequisites section of the Plato Student Orientation document, found at the beginning of this course. Credit Value Drafting and Design 1A is a 0.5-credit course. Architectural Lines Describe the types of architectural lines, line weight, and line quality. 2 Architectural Lettering Describe lettering styles and rules. 3 Symbols and Conventions Identify drafting symbols and discuss various drafting formats. 3

4 Dimensioning Discuss dimensioning rules and systems and the effect of tolerance on dimensioning. 3 Mathematics Apply basic mathematical skills. Freehand Sketching Describe sketching techniques and prepare freehand sketches. 4 Computer-Aided Design and Drafting Identify and perform basic CADD operations. 4 Advanced Computer-Aided Design and Drafting Identify and perform advanced CADD operations. Geometric Constructions Discuss various methods to draw geometric constructions. 5 Intersections and Developments Discuss intersections and surface developments. 5 Review End of 4 Assessment
