1 09 Welding- Individuals Secondary & Post-secondary To Instructors & Contestants: Welcome to the 09 Welding SkillsUSA competition. Everyone involved with this program is very excited to see you display your skills and what you have learned. Year after year you all have done a fantastic job, and in turn made our job at selecting the top competitors that much more difficult. The caliber of welders that are coming through this program proves that New Mexico is and will remain one of the best in the nation. This year we would like to do things a bit differently. Enclosed in this packet you will find prints for projects. These prints do not include any dimensional information, nor do they include the welding process. The purpose of this is to give you all an idea on what to expect for competition day. They are not necessarily the prints you will be using. As for process, we will not be indicating what processes you will be using the day of. We do strongly recommend that you practice all of them if possible (FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, and Oxy-fuel). Layout will be required. To mirror the national s event, we will be providing weld procedures that you will be required to follow to complete your project. Please be sure you understand and can interpret a standard weld procedure specification (WPS). A sample procedure has been provided as well. We have made a minor change for welding positions. On competition day, please review the entire drawing and notes for position. Post-secondary students will be required to perform welds in position as specified in the print s notes. Secondary will be allowed to manipulate their projects to whatever position they choose. However, if you do choose to perform all your welds in the flat position points will be deducted from your overall score (Risk vs Reward so choose wisely). Best regards, Seve Quinn Technical Chair, Welding- Individuals
