1 New Mexico Welding Fabrication 2018 Purpose: The purpose of the Welding Fabrication contest is to evaluate each contestant s preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding contestants for excellence and professionalism in the field of welding fabrication. Scope: The scope of this contest is defined by industry standards. All blueprints, welding symbols, and welding terms must conform to the latest edition of the American Welding Society (AWS) standards. Knowledge Performance: The contest will include a written knowledge exam that assess the practical knowledge of welding, safety, measurement and blueprint reading. Other common fabrication operation may also be assessed such as fit-up, OFC, grinding, and material handling. Eligibility: Open to active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs with welding as the occupational objective. This is a team event and each team will be comprised of three people. They must be student members from the same school and training program and one alternate must be selected for each team. General Rules: All welds shall be left in the as welded condition. This means no grinding of welds. A grinder may be used to prep the project for welding or following cutting activities. Weldments are to include the following three processes: SMAW, GMAW (short circuit), and GTAW. Each team must show a vertical up weld for each of the three welding processes. In-process inspection per the Fire Pit blueprint will be performed by the CWI team appointed by the SkillsUSA welding fabrication chairperson. Clothing Requirements: Each contestant must wear the following items during the entirety of the competition: coveralls or work shirt and pants, leather work boots, and ANSI Z87 approved safety glasses with side shields or goggles. Prescription glasses with side shields may be used only if they are ANSI Z87 approved and marked. If not, the prescription glasses must be covered with goggles. Contestants shall NOT have any identification (showing name, school, or anything indicating where they are from) except for conference badge with contestant number assigned. Page 1 of 5
2 Theme: Fire Pit The Welding Fabrication Competition for New Mexico SkillsUSA will have a theme of a Fire Pit. Your design must use 90% of the materials listed on the bill of materials (page 4). The materials will be on site and cut to pre-determined lengths. The contestants must fabricate their Fire Pit according to their blueprints and completed in the four-hour time frame given. Assembly blueprints are required to have the proper dimensions, welding symbols, weld dimensions, top views, side views, and front views. The blueprints must be on an 11 X 17 paper. The design of the Fire Pit must include SMAW, GMAW (short circuit), GTAW, and OFC. Again, ALL welds must be identified on the blueprint with proper welding symbols and weld processes as described by the American Welding Society. There will be NO changes allowed to the blueprints once they have been turned into the judging committee. Please remember to bring two copies of the blueprints with you. One will be submitted to the judges at orientation and the second copy is for use by the team during the competition. Contest Guidelines: Each team must comply with and be aware of the following guidelines: 1. Contestants must correctly use the welding equipment during the contest. The contest chairman and contest coordinator may stop a contestant at any section of the contest if they deem a contestant s manner to be hazardous to either themselves or others. Such a stoppage shall disqualify the participant for that section of the contest. If the contestant is warned a second time, he/she will be disqualified as a contest participant. 2. Contestants may direct questions or concerns to the judges, contest coordinator, or contest chair. It is expected that team members will communication with each other. 3. A time limit on the contest has been established to a 4 hour fabrication time. Points will be deducted from the team score if the team takes more that the allotted 4 hours. 4. Welding and cutting operation instructions must be specified in the blueprints. 5. Welding equipment used in the contest may be obtained from a variety of manufacturers and may include transformers, rectifiers and/or inverter. 6. Instruction to the contestant will define more specifically the filler metals that may be used. 7. Welds will be evaluated visually utilizing a rating system as established by the SkillsUSA Technical committee. Nondestructive and/or destructive tests may be used to complete the project evaluation. Page 2 of 5
