DUPLO PROJECT REQUIREMENTS: From 5 duplo blocks, create an asymmetrical form. Then cast shadow onto the object and freehand two isometric drawings using two different techniques to show tone. EXECUTION: The image on the left is ink with varying horizontal lines to create the tone. The image on the right is pencil with a blending stick to create tone. 5

STILL LIFE VERTICAL SECTION HORIZONATAL SECTION ELEVATION 1 ELEVATION 2 REQUIREMENTS: Every person in our class had to model basic shapes and then with a group we arranged the shapes in such a way that would optimize shadows. From that layout we had to freehand a tone drawing and hand draft the elevations and sections. 7

SPATIAL SEQUENCE REQUIREMENTS: From a kit of parts, create three gathering spaces to represent spring, summer, and fall. Each space must have a clear entrance and be connected to a path through the site. CONCEPT: The aniticpation of the impending change in season causes one to focus on the future & rush through the present. Summer - Fall- Winter-Spring EXECUTION: The spaces are simple and designed for easy movement through them. They are built solely for temporary gathering. 9

NATURE OF MATERIALS this project is meant to be viewed from the front, because Aalto intended the focus of the home to be the main entrance. the back was very simple and almost seemed to be an after thought the overall shape of this project is an assumed curve because Aalto was exploring a contradiction to modernism and the idea of curvilinear vs. rectilinear the wood is joined in this manner to represent how Finnish log cabins were constructed the metal is two different types and is two different shapes because Aalto wanted to avoid all typical architectural rhythms the metal is tall and thin to mimick the trees that inspired Aalto PROCESS the concrete is cylindrical because it is a more fluid material and therefore was molded to create more natural shapes the material placement represents the progession of the facade: the concrete represents the earth wall, the wood represents the traditional middle portion of the house, and the metal represents the modern right side of the facade. the glass acts as a see-through connection: Aalto did not blend the modern and traditional styles together, instead he made them blatantly obvious the base is simple and white to reflect the modernist principles that were the foundation for this building REQUIREMENTS: Create a sculpture that abstractly represents the concept behind an assigned building, without mimicking the design of the building. Wood, metal, glass, and concrete must be used and proper construction connections must be used. The sculpture needs to be approximately 4 x4 and less than 200 pounds. CONCEPT: A sculpture that represents the evolution of the facade on Alvar Aalto s Villa Mairea, while embracing how wood, metal, concrete, and glass are actually used. 11

PRECEDENT STUDY Grand Teton Discovery & Visitors Center Bohlin Cywinski Jackson 2007 REQUIREMENTS: With a partner, research an assigned building and create a 3D presentation that represents the concepts behind the building. The informational images must be hand drawn. CONCEPT: A presentation that mimicked the different roof and facade plans that were used, while also showing the inspiration derived from the surrounding scenary. EXECUTION: The overall shape represents the form of the building and the most important documents were highlighted by framing them. The mountains were mimicked by having the side panels shaped as an abstraction of the peaks. The diagrams were placed on portions of the presentation that related to their purpose; i.e. the diagrams pertaining to sceneary were placed on the side panels. 13

ECOLOGY CENTER PROCESS REQUIREMENTS: From an assigned program, design an ecology center and the site of Dusable Park in Chicago, IL. Create plans, 2 sections, a site plan, a 1/30 site model, a 1/8 model, and a 1/2 detail model. CONCEPT: The juxtaposition of the ever changing shoreline and the manmade forces that alter its formation. Which will be accomplished through the expression of simulated erosion and harsh 90 degree angles in contrast with free flowing forms. EXECUTION: Half of the site and building has a natural flow, while the other half has straight lines and is manicured. The main circulation space is the glass atrium in the center and acts as the point where the natural and manmade elements meet. This site is a combination of manmade and natural, therefore the building is rotated on an angle in order to become disconnected from the city gridlines. 15
