1 The Buffalo Official publication of The Winnipeg Philatelic Society February 2006 Vol. XL, No. 6 Closed Album It is with sadness that we report the passing of member Bob Kenal on December 19, Bob passed away at the age of 66 years. Due to illness, Bob retired from Glenlawn Collegiate in St. Vital, a career he was passionate about. He enjoyed being a member of various stamp clubs and was one of the founding members of the junior stamp club. Bob was an avid philatelist and loved to pass on his knowledge to the younger generation. He will be missed in the local philatelic community. Editor to Retire My family is planning to build a new home this summer on some acreage we purchased last year near Beausejour, Manitoba. Due to the travel distance I don t expect to be attending WPS meetings on a regular basis. As such, I don t feel that I would be best suited to continue as Editor of The Buffalo. I have approached President Bob Stanley and asked him to find a new editor as I need to relinquish my duties as soon as possible. My stamp workload is increasing substantially in the next two to three months (Unitrade editing) so the sooner a replacement can be found, the better. If you would like to take on this extremely fulfilling position, please contact Bob or myself at your earliest convenience. The Buffalo is, for many of our membership, the only contact that they have with the club. US Rates to 47? A report on the internet this past week suggests that postal rates in the United States could rise to 47 by Christmas The rates are currently 39, effective January 8, 2006 (they have been 37 for the past couple of years). That would be quite an increase, should it actually take place. New Machins A rate change in Great Britain, effective April 3, 2006 means that four new Machin stamps are being released on March 28: < 37p olive green < 44p ultramarine < 49p rust < 72p red I use WordPerfect when preparing the bulletin, but you can use Word or any other publishingtype program that you are comfortable with. When an issue is complete, a PDF file is created and e mailed to Rick Penko who then gets the bulletin printed. Simple as that! Guidance and help will certainly be available. 4 USA (39 ) Lady Liberty by: Robin Harris Postage rates in the United States increased to 39 effective January 6, In anticipation of the new rates, the US Postal Service issued a non denominated Lady Liberty design on December 8, Due to several different printing companies being employed, and various formats that were printed, eleven different varieties can be distinguished (and have been assigned a Scott number): Determining which version of Lady Liberty stamp is which has proved to be a difficult task. Hereʹs a quick overview of them all, with the numbers assigned by Scott: 3965 w/a pane of 100 water activated gum, ʺUSPSʺ microprint 3966 s/a pane of 20 perfs on all 4 sides, ʺUSPSʺ, gravure printing Non-denominated (Dec 8/05) 3967 w/a coil of 3000 also water activated gum, gravure (Sennett Security Products; PNC S1111) 3968 s/a coil of 100 perf 8.5, gravure (Avery Dennison, PNC V1111) 3969 s/a coil of 100 perf 10.2, gravure (Sennett Security Products; PNC S1111, Peak/Valley and Valley/Peak available) 3970 s/a coil of 100 perf 9.5, ʺUSPSʺ, offset printing (Ashton Potter, PNC P2222) 3971 conv. bklt of 20 perf 11 1/4 x 11 ʺUSPSʺ, offset (Ashton Potter) 3972 conv. bklt of 20 perf 11 1/4 x 10 3/4, gravure (Avery Dennison) 3973 conv. bklt of 20 perf 11 1/4 x 11, gravure (Sennett Security Products) 3974 vend. blkt of 20 perf 11 1/4 x 11, offset (Sennett Security Products) 3975 ATM pane of 18 perf 8 (Avery Dennison) A 39 denominated version was released January 8, It too will likely appear with many different varieties. 5 Buffalo Chips by: Alf Brooks Some Recent Anniversaries Invasion of the Faroe Islands In April of 1940 the Germans invaded Denmark and all communication was cut with the Faroe Islands. On April 12 the British began an occupation of these strategically important islands. At its peak the British forces numbered more than There were only about 400 British left to take part in the Victory Parade in Tórshavn on the 13th May One of the two stamps issued in 2005 to commemorate the occupation is shown here. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) This year marks the 250 th anniversary of the birth of Mozart in Salzburg, Austria. In January Austria and Germany, and many others, issued stamps to mark the anniversary. Be sure to examine the lettering on Austria s stamp. Solidarnosc In August 2005 Poland issued a stamp to mark the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Independent Self Governed Trade Union Solidarity. The Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk, with its Intershipyard Strike Committee, was the historical home of Solidarity. To mark the important event, which led to the freedom of Poland from Communist rule, and contributed to the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Polish Post issued a stamp picturing Lech Walesa, the legendary leader of Solidarity from the Gdansk Shipyard and its first Union Leader, and the Solidarity logo in its original graphic design. Belgium s Independence Called the Netherlands or the Low Countries, the area now comprising Holland and Belgium has been an area of conflict for centuries, as its stronger neighbours fought to occupy the territory. In 1830 the southern portion, Belgium, was declared a constitutional monarchy with a liberal constitution. In 2005 Belgium issued a number of stamps and souvenir sheets to mark the occasion. The souvenir sheet shown here pictures the present monarchs and those of the past. The Mechanical Pencil In 1930 the Fixpencil was first marketed in Switzerland. Invented in 1929 by a Geneva engineer, it was the first spring clutch all metal mechanical pencil. Vol XL, No 6 The Buffalo February

6 Scott Re-numbering The latest Scott Stamp Monthly includes numbering for the recently issued $1 Wildlife stamps of October 20, Scott has placed these two stamps in with the other high value Wildlife definitive issues. In order to do so, some re numbering has taken place, as noted in the chart below. Description Issue date Old number New number 55 Maple Leaf Dec 28/ no change 73 Maple Leaf Dec 28/ Maple Leaf Dec 28/ $1 Loon Oct 27/ $1 Deer Oct 20/ $1 Walrus Oct 20/ The new $1 and $2 definitives come in panes of 16 and souvenir sheets of 4. There is a subtle difference between the stamps found on the panes of 16 and the stamps from the souvenir sheet: under normal lighting conditions, the phosphor tagging on the pane of 16 is shiny (i.e. visible to the naked eye), while the tagging on the souvenir sheet is dull (i.e. not visible). A stamp news group on the internet (Virtual Stamp Club) is reporting that the new $2 Wildlife definitives will also be inserted into the same group of numbers resulting in the following number changes. These have not been confirmed with Scott! Numbers rumoured to be added/changed Description Issue date Old number Suggested# $2 Falcon Dec 19/ $2 Horse Dec 19/ $2 Polar Bear Oct 27/ $5 Moose Dec 19/ $8 Grizzly Bear Oct 15/ Articles Needed!
