1 Even More Practice for the Reading Florida Standards Assessment 1 Original Informational Passage + Editing Tasks Created By Teaching Ambrosia
2 Week 1 Radiant Rhododendrons By Amber McCormick Rhodo- What? Rhododendrons are a type of flowering plant that include over 1,000 spectacular species. The word rhododendron comes from the Greek words rhodos, which means rose, and dendron, which means tree. So, you can think of a rhododendron as a rose tree, even though there are no roses on this bush! Loca2ons These beaujful plants can be found all over the world. They grow in Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. Rhododendrons grow in woodlands, rain forests, and jungles as long as the climate is mild and there s plenty of rain. They grow best when the soil has a high acid count, which is why they grow well in mountainous regions like the Appalachian Mountains in North America. Appearance It can be tricky to know when you ve spooed a rhododendron. They come in various sizes, shapes, and colors. Rhododendrons are generally small, bushy trees with large clusters of ellipjcal, or oval- shaped flowers. The leaves of this plant are usually evergreen leaves. People are osen drawn to rhododendrons because of their beaujful, brightly colored flowers. Cau2on Species But, don t be fooled by the fragrance. These plants can be dangerous! You don t want to ingest any part of a rhododendron. The leaves can irritate your stomach or cause your heart rate to become abnormal. The flowers are not good to swallow either. The honey from the nectar of the flower is poisonous. The next Jme you are out enjoying nature, look for a rhododendron. Take pleasure in the brightly colored petals and fragrant scent. Savor the beauty of the radiant rhododendron! Some examples of rhododendrons are heathers, mountain laurels, blueberries, and cranberries. One of the most popular rhododendrons is the azalea bush. Azaleas were not always considered part of this genus, or group of plants. One of the main reasons for this is that most azaleas leaves are deciduous. That means their leaves fall off every year, unlike evergreens. Both azaleas and other rhododendrons smell wonderful!
