3 Squirrels Adaptations Have you ever wondered what the squirrels adaptations are? Squirrels Have adaptations to help them survive. Squirrels have 2 sharp front teeth to eat and crack hard food open. They collect and store food to eat later. They also have sharp claws to grip or hold onto branches and climb trees. Squirrels grow a winter coat or fur in the winter so they don't get cold. They run very fast to escape or get away from predators. I bet you couldn't be as athletic as as a squirrel! The squirrel is using its adaptations to climb trees.

4 Squirrels Appetite Nibble nibble Squirrels eat food to get energy to help them survive. Squirrels are omnivores or animals that eat plants and meat. Nuts give them more energy than most food they eat. They eat fruits such as berries to get energy. They eat plants like flower buds and grass. Did you know they also eat bones and antlers from deers? 5 A Squirrel's Life Have you ever wondered how long a squirrels lives? Squirrels have lifecycles to make more of its kind. First they are born with there eyes closed. Then there mother takes care of the babies and provides for them. After that the squirrels leave the den weeks old. Next they take care of themselves and start a family of their own. Finally they die usually at 5 years old of age. Those are the facts about the squirrels lifecycle. This is a baby squirrel

6 Squirrels Family Have you ever wondered how many types of squirrels there are? Squirrels are related to other animal species. There are more than 50 types of squirrels. They are related to most rodents. They are relatives with pikas and chipmunks. Another animal they're related to is woodchucks and marmots. Squirrels are also related to ground squirrels and prairie dogs. Who are you related to? The pika is related to the squirrel

7 Squirrels Characteristics Imagine if you had the same characteristics as a squirrel. Squirrels have characteristics that make them unique from other animals. They have very sharp long claws. They have small stable paws. Some of them are 20 inches long from nose to tail! They have a big bushy tail. Squirrels can have a reddish brown,grey or black coat color. 8 Squirrels Protection Imagine if you were a squirrel escaping from a predator. Squirrels have the ability to defend itself against predators. They run very fast to escape predators. They also make a sound to alarm other squirrels that it's in danger. Squirrels use something similar to camouflage to hide from predators. They have sharp claws to climb and escape from predators. Squirrels even claw or hurt some predators to protect themselves. The next time you see a squirrel in danger check what protection skill it is using. This squirrel is running from a predator
