4 King Wamba Carnival Toledo, Ohio has had many celebrations through out the years, but one of the most popular happened during the early 1900 s. It was called the King Wamba Carnival, The Mardi Gras of the North. During the King Wamba Carnival in Toledo, Ohio August , historical events of the Seventh Century that took place at Toledo, Spain the ancient Spanish capital were exemplified. The modern Toledo on the Great Lakes (what it was called in the early 1900) derived its name from Toledo, Spain, which establishes the relationship between the two cities. After the death of the last King of the old Spanish dynasty, so the tradition runs, the pretenders to the Throne could not agree upon a sovereign, and were compelled to send to Rome to have the Pope decide for them. The Pope told the envoys that he who was to be King of Spain would be found plowing his fields with a gray and white ox and his name would be Wamba. The country was searched and Wamba found. The envoys sent messengers on before to tell the Council of the Kingdom that the new King would return to Toledo with them. The council went out to meet the King, who was accompanied by his wife Sancha and their children; the people followed and the joy-bells were set ringing. As the Royal Party entered the city, all the people looked out of their balconies crying Toledo and Spain for Wamba. And also for Queen Sancha SHOW CARDS The Toledo Stamp Expo 09 show cards, 29th in our historic Toledo series, will honor the King Wamba Carnival. There are five different cards with different cachets based on period postcards. A special USPS cancel will be available. The 6x8 Show Cards are $2.50 each and available at the reception table. CARDS AND CANCELLATIONS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE BY MAIL ORDER THIS YEAR SO BE SURE TO GET YOUR CARDS AT THE SHOW. SHOW CANCEL CANCEL This year s Toledo Stamp Expo 09 show cancel was designed by James L. Baumann PhD, The cancel commemorates the 100th anniversary of Toledo s 1909 King Wamba Carnival. This cancel will be available on both days of the show. The cancel will be available until April 1st at the philatelic window of the main post office on St. Clair. The special cancel may be applied to items bearing $0.42 postage or more. During the show the cancel will be available at the registration table at the entrance. The Royal Barge heading up the Maumee River King Wamba and Queen Sancha makes their way down the Red carpet On The Cover King Wamba was lumber company president Robert Hixon and socialite Ethel Chesbrough was Queen Sancha. The Chesbrough s were wealthy lumber dealers from East Toledo. The Toledo paper said she was one of the most beautiful women in Toledo. The Wamba parade going down Madison Ave. to 13th St. The King and Queen are seated on the throne under the canopy. RAFFLE The Stamp Collectors Club of Toledo is selling raffle tickets for the maintenance of exhibit frames. First prize is $200.00, Second prize is $100.00, and third prize is $ Tickets are $1.00 each and may be purchased at the reception table. Winner need not be present to win. Please support our club with the purchase of a raffle ticket. The drawing will be held Sunday March 1, 2009 at 3:30 PM. 6 Abraham Lincoln Cacheted Envelope In commemoration of Abraham Lincoln s 200th birthday, The Stamp Collectors Club of Toledo has an Abraham Lincoln cachet on an envelope.
