5 Letter from the President Dale A. Gaerke ISA Toledo Section Members, Our exhibit committee has started planning for our 2017 exhibit and seminars. If you have a particular interest for the seminars, or something different for the format of the exhibit, please let us know. You can contact any of the exhibit team members using their contact information in this newsletter (Bob McClellan, Bob Harold, & Ralph Wittman). Also, we are considering hosting an all-day class the day of the exhibit. If you have a specific topic that you would be interested in, please let Ralph know. We are in need of a Historian for the section, if you would be interested, please contact me. Also, if you have any specific information regarding the Section prior to 1980, we would like to discuss that with you as well. 19 Toledo Section ISA February 25, 2016 Program Report The ISA Meeting for February was part of the Technical Society of Toledo Annual Engineer s Week Banquet which was held at the Parkway Plaza hall in Maumee, Ohio. ISA Toledo had one table at the event. Mr. Kent D. Buehrer, P. E. is the 2016 Engineer of the Year. Kent was born in Toledo, OH and was a student at Maumee High School. Kent has a degree in Ocean Engineering at Texas A&M University and a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He has also pursued graduate studies in Civil Engineering at The University of Toledo. Kent has worked for his father at Buehrer Group in Maumee and has held the position of President of Buehrer Group Architecture & Engineering, Inc since Kent spoke of his accomplishments, the path to his current position and the most important and supportive role his family has played in his life s achievements. Notably Kent has completed 67 marathons and has been active in several professional societies. Amy L. Zimmerman, P. E. is the 2016 Young Engineer of the Year. Amy was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. Amy graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from The University of Toledo and became registered as a Professional Engineer in She was actively involved in the co-op program and worked at ODOT, District 2 in Bowling Green, Ohio for three semesters and at The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. in Monroe, Michigan for one semester. Amy took a full time position at Mannik & Smith in the Monroe office and later transferred to the Maumee office where she switched from site development design to roadway design. Currently Amy is a Senior Transportation Engineer at DGL Consulting Engineers and currently serves as the Lead Design Engineer on the Diverging Diamond Interchange in Perrysburg, Ohio for ODOT District 2. Amy said that she thoroughly enjoys her career and the work that she does for DGL and ODOT. Amy has actively participated in several societies including American Society of Highway Engineers, Toledo Society of Professional Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers. Sunjay Nath is a Professional Motivational Keynote Speaker and a Human Performance Engineer. He promotes and talks about how to get more done in less time. His approach is routed in a strength based approach to leadership that helps improve performance and allow individuals and corporations to get more done with less. Sunjay spoke mostly about his Principle Unlocking Dynamic Performance. Sunjay provided and explained several examples of this principle which every person already exhibits behaviors that are Top 10 (percent), behaviors that lead to high performance and achievement. It rewards and grows Top 10 behaviors and eliminates Bottom 10 actions. A core to this principle is the influence that people have on others. You have the Top 10 performers and the Bottom 10 under performers and the Middle 80 people who could go either way towards the top or the bottom. A good organization will promote the Top 10 and the Middle 80 will follow the Top 10. A bad organization will promote not so good ways and the Middle 80 will follow the Bottom 10. If we acknowledge the way our personal bias forms our opinions and biases, we can easily be trapped by our own limiting beliefs. Overall the banquet was very well organized and provided excellent Engineer of the Year candidates as well as an entertaining motivational speaker. Respectfully submitted, Bob McClellan 19
