26 Toledo Section ISA April 19, 2017 Program Report - BGSU meeting Our meeting for April was held in Bowling Green at SamB s Garden Room. Presented by the BGSU Student Section, the program included guest speakers from the ISA Cleveland section, Dale E. Reed and John Mihevic. The program consisted of a Control presentation on The Six fundamental control strategies: PID, Feedforward, Cascade, Ratio, Split-Range and Override-Select. Dale E. Reed was the presenter. Dale has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his current position is as Principal Engineer with PlantPAx System Engineering at Rockwell Automation in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. Dale is also an ISA Cleveland Section member since 1980 and currently serves as Delegate and Standards and Practices Chair. Dale used several examples of control loops such as level, temperature and PH control for his discussion. He explained the principal of a simple control loop using PID Feedback control. Take for example a process where we have to control the level of fluid in a tank. There is an inflow and an outflow to/from the tank. How are you going to control the level? We could use a float to sense the tank level (feedback) and if the level goes low, increase the inflow. If the level goes high, decrease the inflow. Why would the level go low or high you ask? Perhaps the outflow demand decreases or increases due to the requirements of the process farther down the line. If this happens, then a Control Valve (CV) on the inlet can close (if the outflow decreases and the level starts to increase) or it can open (if the outflow increases and the level starts to decrease) to control the level in the tank. The Process Variable (PV) (level) has to deviate from its target value, the Setpoint (SP), for any control action to take place. The difference between the PV and SP is called the Error (E). The sign of the Error depends on which way we have to move the valve when the level is too high or too low. Dale continued his discussion of the complete PID control strategy and also presented five other methods of control including Feedforward, Cascade, Ratio, Split-Range and Override-Select. One VERY IMPORTANT topic which Dale emphasized is..tuning, TUNING, TUNING. You cannot learn too much about TUNING!!!! If you missed this meeting, you missed out on ONE HECK OF A MEETING!!!!!
