1 Pin Traders Club of Virginia The Virginian The First Multiple District Pin Club Volume XXXI, Issue 1 Summer, 2010 President Lion Don Colley 2515 Commonwealth Drive Charlottesville, VA doncolley@comcast.net Secretary Lion Terry Smith 3643 Osborne Drive Warrenton, VA terryb32@comcast.net Treasurer Lion Phil Sharpe 208 Governors Lane, Apt #6 Harrisonburg, VA philtrader@verizon.net Membership Lion Jim Newman 2401 Fairway Drive, SW Roanoke, VA newmanjjnewman@gmail.com Catalogs Lion Bill Smith, PCC 3643 Osborne Drive Warrenton, VA tabs52@verizon.net Newsletter Editor Lion Verle Malik 112 Racey Ridge Drive Winchester, VA lionverl@comcast.net President s Message This past weekend, we Lions of Virginia celebrated our 2010 State Convention at the Hotel Roanoke in the Old Dominion s Star City. In three and one-half days of continuing and frenetic activity, the convention crammed together a wild melange of business meetings, educational seminars and training sessions, hospitality rooms with stomach-filling arrays of finger food, candies, cookies, and beverages, fellowship with old and new friends, and official breakfasts, luncheons, and banquets. Districts 24-B, -C, and -D elected District Governors who are also active pin traders. Those elections demonstrate once again my belief that pin traders are dedicated Lions and are Lions first. On Friday at midday the Pin Traders Club of Virginia hosted our annual luncheon, enjoyable as always. It attracted 110 Lions and guests. PID Wayne Madden from Indiana, attended and spoke briefly. PID Madden will be the USA candidate for 2nd Vice President of LCI in Sydney. Virginia s IPID Wayne Davis, an avid, long-time pin trader, escorted PID Madden during the convention. PTCV Second Vice President and District 24-B District Governor-Elect Susan Evans created the luncheon s highlight, a memorial to Lions Al and Gloria Spruill. Lions Al and Gloria, who died in December of last year within days of each other, had been long-time pillars of the PTCV organization and pin trading in general. Their deaths have affected all of us because they were truly wonderful people. Numerous Lions came up to me later during the convention to compliment DG-E Susan for her thoughtful and highly appropriate words. I am sorry that all of Virginia s pin trades could not be at the luncheon to have heard her speak about the Spruills. Regrettably, we pin traders often fail to promote our hobby and the PTCV to other Lions. We all deplore our slowly shrinking membership, but too few of us make our fellow Lions more aware of our hobby. We provide District Governors free membership during their term in office, but we need more strategies. My idea is that all members include PTCV membership applications on their tables at Fall Conferences and other Lions events. Having copies of The Virginian on your tables may encourage Lions to become interested in pin trading. I have asked our newsletter editor to The Virginian to Lions who are not pin traders. You can help by sending Lion Verle or me the addresses of Lions whom you think would be good members. Have fun. I ll think about y all while I m in Sydney. Enjoy the summer. Lion Don Colley, President
2 PTCV State Convention Luncheon The Pin Traders Club of Virginia held its annual Luncheon Meeting on Firday May 21 st during the LOV State Convention at the Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke Virginia. Member attendance was very good. A special pin of the Mill Mountain Star (similar to the convention pin) was given to all attendees. We were joined by Lions International Guest, PID Wayne Madden of Indiana. During the luncheon meeting, District Governor Elect (24-B) Susan Evans, gave a lovely eulogy in memory of Lions Al and Gloria Spruill. Lion Ann Harris prepared a memoral bulletin for the tables with a rendition of the poem The Dash. PTCV Election Results In accordance with PTCV Policy PTCV PS 0008, two-year term elections were held at the Virginia Lions State Convention held in Roanoke, VA. The voting was conducted during the PTCV luncheon on May 21 st, The following members were elected to the offices indicated: Secretary (2-year term) - Lion Terry Smith Treasurer (2-year term) - Lion Phil Sharpe 2-Yr. Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club Smith Mountain Lake LC, one of the largest clubs in District 24-E, has finally put out a pin! Well, actually two of them, and it only took 25 years. The matching sailboats were debuted at the 2010 Virginia State Convention and were warmly received. The pin with the blue sail is their club pin, while the pin with the red sail is to commemorate their role as host club for the 2010 State Convention. Lion Deborah Farthing oversaw the project from design to sale of the pins. She indicated that it had been a lot of fun and that the wait for the next SML pin will be considerably less than 25 years. Virginia Membership Drive To encourage more Virginia Lions to enjoy the fellowship/fun of pin trading, a significant cashe of pins will be given to one lucky new Virginia member at the Virginia State Convention in May All of the pins in the prize will be either Virginia or Multiple District issues for past International Conventions. New Virginia members enrolled from now until the time of the drawing will be eligible. The winner does not need to be present at the drawing. Additionally, all current members are encouraged to contribute some duplicate Virginia State, Club, personal issues or other Multiple District-level pins. Donated pins can be given to or sent to: Lion Jim Painter, 406 Oriole Street, Staunton, VA A Membership Application form is attached which can be sent or delivered to: Lion Phil Sharpe, PTCV Treasurer 208 Governors Lane, Apt #6 Harrisonburg, VA The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer somebody else up. - Mark Twain
3 Congratulations A special congratulations are extended to the following PTCV members elected as District Governors for : 24-B Susan J. Evans - Ashland Lions 24-D Donna Weiler - Richmond County At the Banquet on Saturday Night Lion Donna Weiler was awarded the LCI Presidents Leadership Medal for her commitment and dedication to global memberhip and her selfless leadership during the past year. LITPC Membership LITPC has reversed its downward trend in memberships but there is a long way to go to return to the numbers achieved a few years ago. Lion Jim Minnich (Membership Chairman) handed out over a hundred sponsor pins to pin traders bringing in new LITPC members. It seemed like every attending LITPC officer brought in multiple memberships with many Virginia members also receiving them. I ve received mine, have you sponsored a new LITPC member yet? PTCV members, let s take on the challenge of increasing LITPC s membership as we recruit new members for our club. If you never have been a member, or have let your dues elapse; please complete the enclosed LITPC Membership Applicatioan form and send a check in the amount of $15.00 payable to the LITPC and mail to: Lion Don Wagner, LITPC Treasurer 5853 Frank Gailey Road Clermont, GA The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug. - Mark Twain Mount Vernon Evening Lions Club The Mount Vernorn Evening LC released its first pin since its chartering in The pin is of the home of founding father and President George Washington. The scenic Mount Vernon estate is one of the most frequently visited historic sites in Virginia. QUINN, PCC 3499 Winding Trial Circle Virginia Beach VA PIN CHAIRMAN HARRY FULWILER, III 6755 Arthur Hills Drive Gainesville VA May 2010 Pin Traders Club of Virginia The First Multiple District Pin Trading Club in Lionism MEMORANDUM FOR MEMBERS PIN TRADERS CLUB OF VIRGINIA SUBJECT: Salute to the Armed Forces Pin Series Most of you may recall seeing in The Virginian, pictures of the fantastic sets of military insignia patch pins that will be featured at the 2010 PTCV Pin Swap in Winchester next November. There will be a set of 12 pins issued on Thursday during the Swap and a set of 12 pins issued on Friday. Obviously, the best chance that you will have to add these beautiful pins to your collection is to join us for all the fun and fellowship that have become the trademark of our annual Swap. Now, the primary purpose of this letter is to announce that your Board of Directors has approved the beginning of a new pin series as a Salute to the Armed Forces. This idea has been on the drawing board awaiting the ending of the LITPC Bird Series that many of you had already committed to and which proved to be a nice but limited (participant-wise) series. Well, that series is now history and we are in a position to begin this new series that some of us have been eagerly awaiting. Before I proceed further, let me hasten to add that our friends in Pennsylvania are continuing their version of the Bird Series, which they plan to terminate at the conclusion of the LCI convention in Seattle, Washington. Since the introduction of new pins always seem to ignite the varied interests of most pin traders, our new series should add to and not detract from the Pennsylvania series. I am enclosing the Guidelines that have been developed governing the Armed Forces Series. As you will read, the Series will commence on 1 July 2010 and will terminate on 1 July I want to emphasize that we encourage any and all members of the PTCV, both regular and associate members to join the fun that a series seems to bring. We also invite any and all members of the LITPC and the several multiple district pin trading clubs throughout Lionism to join us for a series that has the potential for satisfying most everyone. Before I close, I want to remind you all about PTCV Pin Swap XXXI, which will be held at the usual location in Winchester, Virginia, November I know that many of you already have a registration form and I trust that you will be mailing it shortly. For those of you who might not have seen one, I am enclosing a copy with this memo. We looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in the heart of the apple country in November. Happy pin trading, A. Gordon Colley, III, CC President PTCV Encls
7 GUIDELINES GOVERNING THE SALUTE TO THE ARMED FORCES SERIES 1. The series will include all pins issued between 1 July 2010 and 1 July All pins in this series will be included on the PTCV website, as well as a special catalog issued by the PTCV. In this connection, to enable all who wish to have a hard copy catalog, the PTCV Board of Directors has agreed to subsidize 50% of the cost of printing. Each subscriber shall be expected to pay the other 50%, as well as mailing costs when that method of distribution is desired. To make sure that sufficient copies are printed, it will be necessary for you to advise PCC Bill Smith in advance of your intentions to receive the printed catalog. Obviously, the cost for each issue of the printed catalog will be determined by the number of pages for each issue. For those who wish to create your own catalog, you will be able to download the images that are shown on the PTCV web site. 3. The pins in this series will be limited to those which feature some form of salute or recognition of the Armed Forces. This may include, but not necessarily limited to, individual troops (soldiers, sailors, airmen), military gear, vehicles, weapons, and posters depicting the military. The term Armed Forces includes all military from the Revolutionary War to the present wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In recognition of our pin traders outside the U.S.A., we encourage you to take advantage of this series to salute the armed forces of your nation. We recognize that we have already had a series devoted specifically to the U.S. Civil War and that some may wish to include pins in this series that involves that conflict. However, the basic rule applies that the pins must be those which are issued between 1 July 2010 and 1 July Only pins that are made by an LCI authorized pin maker will be included in this series. 5. There are no objections to the use of cartoon type pins as long as they are not offensive to most people. We assume that should you decide to use a cartoon character that is registered or which has copyright restrictions, the authorized pin maker will require you to show proof of permission. This will be YOUR responsibility and YOU can expect to suffer the consequences of any infringement. 6. One of the greatest objections voiced during the conduct of other series is the issue of large numbers of pins in a single set. Accordingly, there shall be a limit of 12 pins in any single set. Should you have a subject that would require a greater number than 12 pins, it is suggested that you break the pins into more than one set. 7. To avoid the many problems experienced in prior series of trying to collect pins from non-pin traders, all individuals in a set MUST be a member or the spouse of a member of the PTCV or the LITPC or another recognized Lions pin trading club. In this connection, we strongly urge you to avoid asking members who rarely, if ever, attend established pin swaps or Lions conventions. Invariably, these members refuse to trade by mail and that makes it next to impossible to obtain their pins. 8. The PTCV shall issue two 12 pins military insignia sets each year in conjunction with the 2010 and 2011 PTCV pin swaps held in Winchester. This advance information is provided in the hopes that there will be no conflicting or competing insignia pins issued by individuals. Should you desire to issue a military insignia, we urge you to contact Lion Harry Fulwiler to coordinate your proposal. You can reach Lion Harry by phone on , or by on jenharf@comcast.net. His mailing address is 6755 Arthur Hills Drive, Gainesville VA Send ONE of each pin for scanning and insertion on the web site and for inclusion in the catalog to PCC Bill Smith, 3643 Osborne Drive, Warrenton VA Please indicate whether you wish to trade, sell, or have the pins returned. For those who wish to contact PCC Bill regarding the series or to order the printed copy of the catalog, you may reach him by phone on , or by on tabs52@comcast.net. We repeat. If you wish to have a printed catalog at 50% of actual cost, you need to contact PCC Bill to enable him to print sufficient copies.
