1 THE LANCASHIRE AND NORTHWEST BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION Registered Charity No MEMBERS ANNUAL SHOW To be held at BROCKHOLES NATURE RESERVE Preston New Road, Preston, PR5 0AG (Use PR5 0UJ for Sat Nav) SUNDAY 30 TH SEPTEMBER 2018 HON. EXHIBITIONS OFFICER. Mrs Elaine Hargreaves 16 Brown Lane Bamber Bridge Preston Lancashire PR5 6ZB
2 PROGRAMME STAGING OF EXHIBITS 9.45am to 10.45am JUDGING BY: Dave Shannon, West Yorkshire 11.00am to 1.30pm Gerry Collins, West Yorkshire THE BARBARA RODERICK MEMORIAL LECTURE am to 12.15pm SHOW OPENS* pm JUDGES REPORT & PRESENTATION OF AWARDS* 2.15pm to 2.45pm REMOVAL OF EXHIBITS*. 4.00pm to 4.30pm SHOW CLOSES 4.30pm. (* Approximate times) THE BARBARA RODERICK MEMORIAL LECTURE "That looks different, what is it? How serious and what can I do?" Graham Royle This year, the lecture has been renamed to the memory of the former President of Lancashire & North West BKA, our dear friend, Barbara Roderick. The lecture is to be given by Graham Royle. Graham currently manages 20 colonies in three apiaries. In 2015 he joined the National Bee Unit as a Seasonal Bee Inspector covering Cheshire. Earlier this year he was appointed as Regional Bee Inspector for the Northern region where he manages a team of four seasonal inspectors covering Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and Northumberland. Graham has always been involved with the education of beekeepers at all levels from encouraging beginners to take up the craft to assisting more experienced beekeepers to learn more about their bees and how to keep them. In his lecture, Graham will look at the common but not so serious bee pests and diseases and the less common but nastier problems that we should be aware of. It will cover the underlying causes and how the problem manifests itself; when in the season we are likely to see these diseases and the husbandry methods that can be used to minimise their impact. The talk will help you recognise disease and select for stronger, disease resistant bees. (If there is a sighting of Asian Hornet, Graham may have to go nest hunting! In this case, there will be an alternative speaker).
