February 2012 The Coastal Bend Companion Bird Club and Rescue Mission seeks to promote an interest in companion birds through communication with and education of pet owners, breeders and the general public. In addition, the CBCBC&RM strives to promote the welfare of all birds by providing monetary donations for the rescue and rehabilitation of wild birds and by placing abused, abandoned, l ost or displaced companion birds in foster care until permanent adoptive homes can be found. HAPPY VALENTINE S DAY! BIRD MART APRIL 28 TH Go to our website to get a reminder sent to you as the date gets closer. Don t miss out on the chance to win prizes, take home a new feathered friend or just stock up on supplies for the kids you already own. GENERAL MEETING FEBRUARY 16 TH AT 7PM Galilean Lutheran Church 3321 Cimarron Boulevard Corpus Christi, Texas, 78413
Following is a message from Jim regarding left over bird feed. I have been doing this for a few weeks and it's amazing the amount of food I have been tossing out from just 2 birds! Please read and consider the suggestion. Thanks...Marcia. Hi all If you are feeding a diet of Seed and/or Pellet, and you throw out the left over s, please continue to read: In addition to the caged birds out at the Botanical Gardens, the Gardens also feeds numerous wild birds out along the nature trails. This is a substantial expense the gardens consumes year round in an attempt to keep wild avian species available in the immediate area for the public s enjoyment. For the past couple months, I have been testing out the concept of providing the gardens with the left over s from my parrots for use out on the trails to feed the wild birds. Roughly, they receive a 5 gallon pale of left over s, or slump as I call it, each week. If you are tossing the bottom of the bowls, left over s, or slump, please consider bagging it and bringing it to the meetings each month. With enough bags of the left over seed and pellet, the gardens can essentially quit purchasing wild bird food for many wild species and divert those dollars to other worth wild projects at the Gardens such as the housed bird exhibits. Personally, I have found the effort it takes and the mess it makes to bag this stuff up in a bucket a lot easier than actually throwing it out. And, I feel better knowing it will be used a second time vice being discarded because of my picky parrots practice of cherry-picking out the things they like. If you re interested, just Dump the Slump in a bag and bring it to the meetings! I will collect and deliver Thanks Jim Harmon BIRD RECIPE
Birdie French Toast Several pieces of day-old multigrain whole wheat bread 4 eggs (no shells) 2 tablespoons plain or vanilla yogurt Beat eggs with yogurt, then dip bread in mixture coating well. Cook on skillet as you would regular French toast. These pieces can be used immediately, or can be refrigerated or frozen for later use. Take warm toast (either fresh cooked or toasted) and spread with a thin layer of chunky peanut butter and sprinkle with raisins and/or chunks of walnut. Cut into small pieces and serve warm. Reminder to all, dues are now due:) A new membership form and our mailing address can be accessed on line at our website or we will have forms available at the general meeting. Please help us by taking care of this as soon as you are able. NANDAY CONURES
They re loud, they re active, they re typical conures, but Nandays have always been one of my favorite birds. They were one of the first pairs I had as a breeder, and the first babies I handfed after cockatiels. Nandays are native to Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. It isn t uncommon to see feral flocks mixed with Quakers or Indian Ringnecks. In a flock, Nandays usually number over 10 birds. Their loud, raucous, calls let everyone know Nandays are in the neighborhood. Their green coloring makes them hard to see in deep foliage. Nandays have long slender bodies and rounded heads. Their black mask extends below their beak. They have red patches at the ankles, and their tails are often tipped in a bright blue. They make wonderful pets. They are curious and outgoing. They enjoy being petted and will gladly accept an invitation to be held. If properly socialized, they will go to strangers without hesitation. They like lots of shoulder time, but don t expect them to be still. They will climb all over you, inspecting every inch and looking for something to play with. Nandays are good at learning tricks. In shows, they ve been used for retrieving dollar bills from the audience and returning them. They are good dancers and can learn many physical tricks. Though conures are not known for their talking ability (I ve had many that have disproved this rule.) Nandays can learn to talk. They have raspy voices. A handfed bird is more likely to talk than a wild or hand tamed one. Conures need cages measuring approximately 30 W x 30 D x 36 H with bars spaced no more than ½ apart. Nandays should be fed a varied diet. Seeds, pellets, fruits and vegetables should be offered. I found my Nandays were big vegetables lovers. They really enjoyed peppers, (especially fresh jalapenos) zucchini, apple, corn, and beans. They were not picky and at just about anything I put in front of them, but the jalapenos were a special treat. At one bird fair, I had given the handfed babies each pepper, not realizing when people took them out to play and give kisses, the Nandays gave a new meaning to hot lips!
Introducing a new bird All of us at one time or another have brought a new bird home to our existing flock. It s tempting to throw open the cages and expect everyone to play well together. Think of how you would feel if a stranger suddenly appeared in your home one day with no explanation. You d get a little territorial, I m guessing. And so will your bird. The first thing to do is quarantine. Thirty to forty-five days is the minimum recommended time. The birds may hear each other in separate rooms and call back and forth. This may be especially true of cockatiels, but they re just getting used to each other. They aren t telling you they need to be together NOW. Stick it out and hold fast to the quarantine rules. After the quarantine is over, take the bird to an avian vet and get it checked out. A clean bill of health means you can initiate the introductions. First, put the new bird in the same room with your bird. Keep cages closed. Don t put the cages too close together. Across the room from each other is great. Leave them that way for a week or two. When they are in the same room, the birds can have their time out of the cage separately. When they re used to each other, move the cages side by side. Don t put them so close that toes can get nipped, but close enough that you can see if any bickering breaks out. If they try to hurt each other through the bars, move them about 5 feet apart for a few days. When things seem more peaceful, try them closer again. When the neighbors seem to be getting along, bird proof the room and open both cages. Stay close by so you can intervene in case of an emergency. You can also try carrying them to a neutral play area if one is available. If they fight, return them to their cages for at least three days before you try again. Remember, all birds will not get along. Most birds will accept new friends but some will only learn to tolerate each other. There may be a point where you will have to say you ve tried everything and realize they will not be friends. If you are going to put the birds in the same cage, take the original bird out of the cage. Rearrange the perches, toys, cups, etc. and return both birds to the cage at the same time. This may help avoid territorial issues.
