POINSETTIA ORNAMENT By Debbie Rowley Finished size: About 3 1/4 x 1/4, 60 x 60 on 18 ct. white canvas I stitched the ornament on 8 x 8 white 18 ct. canvas. I m offering it in two color ways, using threads I had on hand.

2 POINSETTIA ORNAMENT By Debbie Rowley Finished size: About 3 1/4 x 1/4, 60 x 60 on 18 ct. white canvas I stitched the ornament on 8 x 8 white 18 ct. canvas. I m offering it in two color ways, using threads I had on hand. Feel free to substitute thread textures, or colors, to suit your personal preference. Ornament finishing instructions are included after the stitching instructions. Merry Christmas! The table below shows the threads I used to stitch the ornaments. There s a column to record your changes. Stitch the petals as shown in Diagram 1. Bring the needle up to begin 6 canvas threads up from the center, and 8 canvas threads left of the center. This is position 1 on the diagram. Diagram 1

3 Stitch 8 petals around the center. Placement is shown in Diagram 2. Diagram 2 The purpose of the satin stitching is to cover the canvas so no white shows through when the jessicas are placed over them.

It will take about for each Jessica. Diagram 3 Notice that there are 4 pairs of petals - two upper left, two upper right, two lower right and two lower left. I suggest beginning with the Jessica around that lower petal at the upper left. (Underlying stitches will not be shown in subsequent diagrams.)

5 Diagram 4 After the first stitch, begin the Jessica as shown in Diagram 4. The stitches begin in a straight line in adjacent holes, and end in adjacent holes diagonally.

6 Diagram 5 Continue the Jessica as shown in Diagram 5. Each stitch will begin where a previous stitch ended. The stitches end in a straight line in adjacent holes. Diagram 6 Continue stitching as shown in Diagram 6. Each stitch begins where a previous stitch ends, and the stitches end in adjacent diagonal holes.

7 Finish the Jessica as shown in Diagram 7. The stitches begin where a previous stitch ended, but before ending the stitches slide between the previous stitches and canvas. Take care not to catch the satin stitching when sliding the needle. Diagram 7

8 Diagram 8 Stitch a Jessica around each satin stitch petal. I ve given some starting numbers for some of the jessicas. Turn the previous diagrams as needed to stitch the jessicas.

Stitch as shown in Diagram 9. The last 3 stitches all end in the same hole. Turn the canvas and the diagram as needed to stitch all four. Diagram 9

Keep the ribbon very flat and smooth for the best results. Turn the canvas and the diagram as needed to stitch the four sprat s head triangles. Diagram 10

Stitch a right angle sprat s head at the four corners with the fine metallic braid, following Diagram 11. Turn the canvas and the diagram as needed to stitch the corners. Diagram 11

I attached them using the silk pearl. Go through each bead twice to make sure it s secure. I applied the beads using a straight stitch. This keeps the bead hole from showing. You may use as many or as few beads as desired. I used 9, and stitched them somewhat randomly clustered in the center. 14 ORNAMENT FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS Materials needed: 2 pieces of mat board cut to the finished design size 2 pieces of batting cut slightly smaller than the finished design size 1 piece of backing fabric cut about 1 1/2 larger than the finished design size cording tassel glue (such as E3000 or Sobo) 1. Trim the stitched piece to within 1 1/2 of the design (1/2 to 1 for a round ornament). 2. Using glue or double stick tape, secure a piece of batting to each piece of mat board. 3. Lay the stitched piece over the batting, with the right side up. Fold the points of the stitched piece to the back side of the mat board and secure with a bit of glue. Fold in the sides of the stitched piece over the mat board and secure with glue. For a round ornament, make small cuts from the outside edge in about ½ ; when gluing the cuts in the edge will allow you to smooth most of the wrinkles out so the fabric will lay flat. Let dry before proceeding. 4. In the same way, cover the second piece of mat board with the backing fabric, mitering in the points and securing with glue. Let dry before proceeding. 5. Glue the end of the tassel to one piece of mat board, having the top of the tassel even with the bottom point of the ornament. Glue the two pieces of covered mat board together, with the stitched design and backing fabric facing out. Let dry thoroughly before proceeding. Stack a heavy book on the glued ornament to make sure there is a good bond between the two pieces of mat board. 6. When thoroughly dry, glue the cording to the ornament. Tuck the end of the cording between the two pieces of mat board and work around the ornament, gluing as you go. At the top leave a generous loop of cording for a hanger, give a slight twist, then complete gluing the cording around the ornament, tucking in the end again when you reach the starting point. Allow to dry thoroughly.
