3 Introduction The X400 3D printer is a large-capacity rapid prototyper. Its large print volume of around 56 litres is considerably greater than similarly priced competitors. It also comes with a range of options making the printer suitable from private users to professionals alike. The X400 combines all the advantages of OpenSource technologies with the design excellence and build quality we have come to expect from products Made in Germany. 4 X400 CE fully assembled device Under the product name X400 CE, the large-capacity 3D printer X400 is now available as an according to DIN ISO 9001 specifications assembled device. With 56 liters of printing volume, it meets the requirements of professional users. Especially medium-sized and large enterprises often stick to buying DIN ISO 9001 verified devices due to operational reasons. The examination according to the relevant DIN guideline (robotic systems and integration) conduces to the operational safety. The outer dimensions of the X400 CE are 66 x 66 x 77 cm (D/W/H) with a weight of about 40 kg and it is mounted on a stable aluminium frame. The whole printing space is protected by a case. A base with lots of storage space is available as an option. Moreover, if desired, the printer may be equipped with a deformation free ceramic heated bed. X400 basic (DIY kit) The new X400 3D printer combines the advantages of the OpenSource technology with an efficiency and quality Made in Germany, interesting for professional users in engineering and construction, batch or electronics production and for ambitious private users. 5 A lot of components and the necessary software are Open Source and are free of license costs. With a layer thickness down to 0.1mm, and a printing space of around 400 x 400 x 350mm, models with a volume of up to 56 litres may be printed. The X400 has a maximum volumetric speed of 15 cubic mm per second. One 3mm direct-drive extruder is included as standard, with the option of an additional second extruder for printing separate support material or for printing in two different materials or colours. The standard 3mm extruder may be replaced with a 1.75mm extruder as an option. All direct-drive extruders use high quality components and lowplay drives. Single-motor driven trapezoidal spindles are used on the z-axis instead of the traditional threaded rods, providing easier operation, less backlash and higher accuracy. All axes slide along hardened steel guide rods. The X400 has an overall dimension of 65 x 65 x 70 cm (W/D/H), with a weight of about 35 kg and is mounted on a stable aluminium frame. A case and a substructure are available as an option. Additionally, the printer can be equipped with a deformation-free ceramic heated bed. The modular design of the X400 allows easy access to all components facilitating your own customisations, for example, the addition of milling spindles. 5

6 X400 Additional options Acrylic case The acrylic case encloses the X400, shielding the moving components and reducing the impact of draughts and dust. The acrylic case, when combined with the ceramic heated bed, greatly reduces model warpage. Extruder An optional second extruder, either 3mm or 1.75mm, can be added to print support material such as PVA or print material of a different type or colour. 6

7 Ceramic heated bed The ceramic heated bed greatly improves your prints. It helps to ensure adhesion of the printed material to the bed and helps to reduce model warpage. The ceramic heated bed must be coated with PET or Kapton tape when using ABS. We highly recommend the ceramic heated bed to all customers. The ceramic heated bed is deformation free up to about 400 C and can withstand temperatures as high as 800 C, suitable for those who wish to experiment with other materials or processes. The high quality ceramic is wear-free and is the best quality heated bed on the market. 7

8 Mobile-Storage-Device (SD card reader) The mobile storage device makes it possible to read print data from an SD-card. When operating without an LCD controller, the printing is being initiated from a PC through a USB connection. After the printing has started the USB connection can be disconnected. This is particularly convenient for larger print jobs. SD-cards with a capacity of up to 2GB are supported. 8

9 German version displayed LCD controller The LCD controller, along with the Mobile-Storage-Device, upgrades the X400 to a stand-alone unit. Therefore, a completely autonomous operation is possible, without USB connection to a PC. During the printing process, operating parameters such as temperatures, elapsed printing time etc. are constantly updated on the display. A lot of parameters can be changed on-the-fly using the rotary-push button, for example the printing speed and the printing data parameterization. 9

10 Base cabinet The base cabinet provides a stable platform for the X400. It is made of the same aluminium profiles as the upper frame of the device. Thereby the X400 is brought to a comfortable working height and is easier to integrate in existing machine shops, labs or offices. The cabinet is equipped with two strong shelves to store printing material and tools. The height of the base cabinet may be adapted to the individual needs. Handholds The handholds enable a comfortable transport of the X400. Especially with the use of the transparent acrylic case, the handholds turn out to be really helpful. 10

11 Energy chain The energy chain (standard with X400 CE, optionally for the X400 basic) guides all the cables and filament feeds for the tool heads (e.g. the extruder) inside the acrylic case. Strong braiding further protects the cable runs. The energy chain also simplifies the fitting of the acrylic top cover. The energy chain can be fitted without the acrylic case and includes the breakout cable of the X400 basic device. 11
