It ties together with an endless thread the emotional life of my people. Nilda Callanaupa Alvarez President s Message Charlene St. John SEPTEMBER'S MEETING IS VERY IMPORTANT! IT IS TIME TO BE THE GUILD! There are some important topics we need to discuss. And it cannot be delayed. We need the input and the participation of each of our guild members. That is why I am asking that all members be present for the September meeting. The first item is the Blue Ridge Fiber Show. A lack of volunteer commitment for this activity has raised concerns about the continuation of future BRFS shows. Only a minimal number of people have agreed to help even though Joan has repeatedly asked for assistance. If you have never participated before, even on a volunteer basis, you have missed out on a rare opportunity. It takes two years of planning to put this show together, and it can only be done with help and enthusiasm from all Guild members. Joan has written an article for the newsletter outlining the jobs and personnel needs for the current BRFS under way. Volunteers are needed for: receiving on September 26 (hand delivery day) set up for the show The second item: The Arboretum has asked Joan whether the guild would like to schedule the 2018 BRFS as they are planning that far ahead. I have asked Joan to delay them until after the guild meeting in September. Very bluntly, the big question is: Are we willing to commit to continuing to put on the BRFS? Or has is run its course? There is no good or bad answer to this. But it does need to be a guild consensus. Please be present for this conversation. We need f (continued on page 2)

We need someone to volunteer to head up the Nominating Committee for at least the presidential and vice presidential positions. This position needs to be assumed now. Potential officers need to be identified. The slate will be published in the November newsletter, and a vote made at the November meeting. That's only two months away. I look forward to each of you being there on September 10 th. Between now and then, please look inside yourself and decide for yourself how much you are willing and able to participate in current and future guild activities. Keep your fingers in the fiber. General admission tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at A limited number of VIP tickets for priority seating are $30, and can be ordered by ing: info@localcloth.org, or calling We had a record number of entries this year from many more parts of the Local Cloth region, which is roughly a 100-mile radius of Asheville, said Vicki Bennett, co-chair of the 2016 event. Some of our familiar juried artists are back from our 2012 and 2014 shows, but we are excited to present work by several new participants representing an expanding range of textile design techniques. Textiles used to construct this year s juried looks were hand woven, knitted, felted, naturally dyed, shibori-dyed, eco-printed, quilted, repurposed, embroidered and/or beaded. All entries were required to include some locally sourced materials or creative resources, and collaboration was encouraged. Jurors for Project Handmade 2016 included Diane Ericson, from Ashland, OR, a long-time artist, garment designer and instructor who also creates unique pattern collections and original stencils (ReVisions) and contributes articles for Vogue Pattern Magazine; Kate Mathews, of Weaverville, NC, owner of Folkwear Patterns, founder and former editor of Fiberarts Magazine and the author/editor of several Lark Books; and Tricia Lindsay, of Asheville, NC, buyer and manager for Gallery of the Mountains, located in the Omni Grove Park Inn for the past 24 years. 5 Western North Carolina Fibers/Handweavers Guild Meeting Minutes WNCFHG Meeting Minutes August 13, 2016 President Charlene St. John called the meeting to order at 10AM. Old Business Minutes of the July 2016 meeting were approved with Pat Brown making the motion and Walt Turpening seconding. Treasurer s Report for July 2016 was approved with Pat Brown making the motion and Ursula Powers seconding. Announcements Joan Berner has just returned from Convergence. Committees Website: Charlene St. John notified the Guild Board that she will not be capable of updating and maintaining the Guild website. She has started looking for a firm to do it. If anyone knows of a dependable one, and not overly expensive, please notify her. She will also accept recommendations of Guild members who may be interested in handling this task BRFS: Charlene St. John reported that BRFS Chairperson Joan Berner sent an to her that the NC Arboretum needs to know whether the Guild will reserve the show space for A lack of volunteer commitment for this activity has raised concerns about the continuation of future BRFS shows. Only a minimal number of people have agreed to help even though Joan has repeatedly asked for assistance. Marjorie Kruger has been the steadfast volunteer who has handled all the entry data for a number of years. If you have never participated before, even on a volunteer basis, you have missed out on a rare opportunity. It takes two years of planning to put this show together, and it can only be done with help and enthusiasm from all Guild members. September 26 is a crucial day. Assistance is needed to receive hand-delivered entries and show set-up. Check your availability. Call or Joan, she needs your support! o Discussion was held among Guild members about volunteerism and fundraising. It was suggested that a mentoring program might encourage younger (and new) members to assist. Prize money comes from entry fees. Marjorie Kruger indicated there are 130 entries for down a bit from More conversation ensued about the possibility of doing the show in three-year intervals instead of two-year intervals. Concerns were raised that fewer entries may be received if that route is taken. Currently the show is in sync with Convergence timing; many Convergence entries are also entered in the BRFS. This year, Convergence timing was later than usual which resulted in a delay of early entries for BRFS. (BRFS follows Convergence in timing.) o There was no definitive answer about going forward in Too few members were in attendance to make a final decision. Charlene and Joan will discuss this further and hopefully be able to delay the question until the September meeting. Guild Publicity at Southern Highland Guild Crafts Show: Thanks from Mary Nichols for all the volunteers who worked at the July SHCG Show in the Drop in and Weave Booth. Nominating Committee for 2017: Volunteers are needed to assist in putting together a list of possible candidates to replace the President and Vice-President positions. Nancy Crabtree will continue as Secretary and Lynda Feldman will continue as Treasurer. Hospitality: Thanks to Cristel Walters, Suzanne Monroe and Priscilla Yeager for today s goodies. 5
6 Workshops/Programs: Vice President Ellen Turpening updated the Guild on the round-robin Summer/Winter Workshop to be held at the Folk Art Center in November. The November Guild meeting, presented by Mary Scott (workshop teacher) will be at the Folk Art Center. See the newsletter for further details. Membership: Marjorie Kruger indicated that only 20 members were in attendance today. The low turnout was due to the conflict with the Anything Fiber Sale (fundraiser for BRFS). Four visitors were present. NC Mountain State Fair: Gail Griffith needs volunteers on September 9 in the morning to receive entries; she also needs one more volunteer for display. SAFF: Pat Brown needs another warped loom for Drop in and Weave at the October SAFF event. She would like to have three, instead of two looms. New Business None Adjourn Nancy Crabtree made the motion to adjourn with Lynda Feldman seconding. All were in favor. Show and Tell was followed by the program given by Guild member Walt Turpening. 8 17 Places Left Hurry before they are gone! Western North Carolina Fiber/Handweavers Guild Summer & Winter in the Fall Instructor: Mary Scott 2 and 1/2-day workshop, Nov 11,12 & 13, 2016 Time: 10 am 4 pm Friday (Nov 11) Time: 1pm 4 pm Saturday (Nov 12); Guild Program on Exploring Blocks in am from 10am-12am. Time: 10 am 4 pm (Sunday (Nov 13) Location: The Folk Art Center, Asheville, NC Max # of students: 24 Cost: $120 per member, payable to WNCFHG, and $ 25 per person, payable to instructor at time of workshop. Summer & winter is a two shuttle weave which weaves a pattern tied to a plain weave ground cloth. This is achieved by assigning two shafts (commonly 1 and 2) to serve as "tie down shafts" which holds the pattern in place. The remaining shafts are "pattern shafts," and are used to create the desired pattern. The shafts are threaded so that the tie down and pattern warp ends alternate. One shuttle is used for the tabby weft, which is usually similar to the warp. The second shuttle is used for a heavier, pattern weft. With a 4 shaft loom this means that there are 2 shafts available for patterns so that 2 blocks (or pattern units) can be utilized. The blocks can be repeated as many times as desired, so this is where design comes in. Experience level: In this workshop you will need to be able to warp your loom before the workshop. This workshop is not suitable for rigid heddle looms. 8
9 In this workshop you will learn 1. how to warp your loom in the Summer & Winter pattern, 2. learn about designing with blocks; You will be able to create your own designs with Summer & Winter blocks for further work on your own after the workshop. 3. how to treadle to create slightly different looks Prior to the workshop Mary Scott will provide the warp yarn with a draft and a list of materials for you to gather and bring with you to the Folk Art Center. The $25 fee payable to Mary covers the cost of the warp. If we get enough members to sign up the guild will pay for the warp. WNCFHG WORKSHOP: Summer & Winter in the Fall! GUILD MEMBER APPLICATION To participate in Mary Scott s weaving workshop (Nov, 11, 12 & 13, 2016), please complete this form, sign, date and mail it with your check for $ made payable to WNCFHG to: WNCFHG PO Box 644 Black Mountain, NC Name Phone (please print) Confirmation of enrollment will be sent via . Loom you will be using: (i.e. table loom, floor loom, 4shaft, 8shaft): Favorite Colors of Yarn: I understand that if I cannot come to the workshop, I will lose the fee paid unless I find another member to take my place.
