1 African Flags and Icons A Proposal for the Cape Town 2014 World Design Capital

2 Designing Emerging African Identity introduction The 20th century and especially the 1960 s is epitomised by the decolonisation of the African continent. The representation of the new countries identities through colours in a flag, court of arms and monuments (a predominantly colonial Concept) saw the inheritance of influences from many sources. These sources ranged from the colonisers, struggle heroes to ideologies and religion and the notion of a new emerging pan African identity (pan African flag). The flags, their compositions, symbolism and use of similar colours (with common meanings) can be used to plot a singular (pan African) identity in conjunction with individual identities of African countries. By contrast, the Apartheid State reinforced its rejection of African revolutions through television and printed media, in the form of typography. African Flags and Icons investigates unifying designs of African Flags and designed narratives of segregation inherent in Apartheid typefaces. Tackling concepts of image versus text located within struggles of emerging African identity, the project hosts African designers and artists in a permanent exhibition, online gallery and television programme. Behold a republic standing erect while empires all around are bowed beneath the weight of their own armaments - a republic whose flag is loved while other flags are only feared. William Jennings Bryan We have two American flags always: one for the rich and one for the poor. When the rich fly it means that things are under control; when the poor fly it means danger, revolution, anarchy. Henry Miller Shaped to appeal to the public and young learners in particular, African Flags and Icons is a visual heavy project, with deep undercurrent discussions and analytical explorations on the different flags of African countries which arose in different political climates pre and post colonisation. The representation of emerging identities will find context in other forms of emerging identity representations such as landscapes, cityscapes and city silhouettes to traditional afro European infused textiles and garments.
