Professional training Strategic management of museum resources and inventories in Burkina Faso Financed by: KIT (Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen): Netherlands Amount: US$ Date: From January 08 to 19 Place: Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso Number of participants: 10 (from 6 museums of Burkina Faso) To teach strategic management of resources and management of collections. Results: Definition of the vision and the fundamental missions of the National museum of Ouagadougou, Project for the opening of the National museum. Inventory of the National museum's collections. Abomey 3 Visitor welcome workshop Financed by : Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abomey3 Project (via UNESCO) Amount : US$ Date: from February 26 to March 02 Place: Musée Historique d'abomey Number of participants: 13 (9 permanent guides, 2 non-permanent guides & 2 primary school teachers) develop guides' aptitude to improve how they welcome visitors 1

Date: from May 13 to 26, 2001 Place: France Study tour in France for participants of the 10th University Course Financed by: French and German cooperation-epa-benin-congo-niger. Amount: US$ Number of participants: 12 participants from the 10th International PREMA Course enable participants to discover the main French museums, especially those housing an African collection facilitate exchanges through professional contacts between participants and their northern colleagues deliver degrees to participants promote EPA in France. Visitor welcome workshop in museums of Benin and Togo Financed by: UNESCO-Projet d'appui au développement culturel du Bénin (Service français de Coopération et d'action culturelle au Bénin). Amount: US$ Date: from June 11 to 22, 2001 Place: EPA, Porto-Novo Number of participants: 26 (9 from Beninese institutions and 4 from Togo) develop guides' aptitude to improve how they welcome visitors conceive with museums of Benin and Togo tools for evaluating visitor experience. Results: better know how of guides and finalisation of a list of 100 questions to measure museum performance. 2

Providing of services Study on the rehabilitation of the historical heritage of Porto-Novo Date: from September 10, 2001 to September 09, 2002 start a dynamic for the rehabilitation of the historical heritage of Porto-Novo, through the recommendation of strategies, management policies, incentive mechanisms and pilot operations. To reinforce and promote the authenticity of the town of Porto-Novo characterized by a mixture of ancient and modern cultures, to make a database in the field of safeguarding, rehabilitation and classification of sites and monuments which could be used by researchers, architects, development organisations and politicians. Results already recorded: interest of local communities typology of cultural heritage in Porto-Novo geographical delimitation of the historic centre inventory format analysis of the current legislation concerning cultural heritage Financed by: World Bank-Benin Amount : US$ Survey on the relationships between schools and museums Date: from March 2001 to February 2002 Places: Burkina Faso, Congo, Côte d'ivoire, Gabon, Senegal, Guinea Conakry Results: Financed by: French cooperation Amount : US$ gather and analyse primary school curricula, gather and analyse school books recommended and used for the teaching of subjects linked to cultural heritage in primary schools (history, geography, arts, music...), gather and analyse secondary school curricula in history, geography, art, music, gather and analyse opinions of actors in the field of formal education (primary and secondary school directors, primary and secondary school teachers, inspectors, parents' associations). 3

4 project to create teaching material linking school curricula to museum permanent exhibitions knowledge of the opinion of the actors of the formal educational system. Date: from September 10, 2001 to April 31, 2002 Inventory and cultural tourism on the Slave route Financed by: The "Slave Route" project, UNESCO Amount : US$ Place: Burkina-Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'ivoire, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, Chad, Togo, Benin and Centrafrique Activities: make an inventory of sites linked to the slave trade study the enhancement conditions of these sites for cultural tourism by trying to consolidate national, regional or sub-regional policies relative to the project. suggest a programme for professional training for actors of cultural tourism. a methodology workshop from September 10 to 14, 2001 at EPA, Porto-Novo. surveys from September 15, 2001 to April 31, a feedback workshop from November 26 to 30 at EPA, Porto-Novo. III. Conference Conference "Aguda: Aspects of Afro-Brazilian Heritage in the Bight of Benin" The conference comprised two major and complementary components: a colloquium and an exhibition. 1. Colloquium: "Aguda: Aspects of Afro-Brazilian Heritage in the Bight of Benin". Financed by: UNESCO-Ford Foundation-IBERDA-Benin-Nigerian Hinterland Project Amount : US$ Date: from November 26 to 30, 2001 Place: Porto-Novo 90 participants from West Africa, Brazil, Canada, the United States of America, Europe, the Middle-East. 48 papers were given. 2. Exhibition: "Aguda: Itineraries and identities" 4

5 Date: from November 28, 2001 to February 28, 2002 Place : Bibliothèque départementale, Porto-Novo Financed by: Ford Foundation-UNESCO Amount : US$ Designed to travel, it brings together in a symbolic circuit photographs of famous families, personal artefacts, furniture and photographs of high quality architectural elements. Main target: pupils (5000 in each locality in which the exhibition will be shown). Results: visitors of which 90% were school children Read the general report. IV. Publishing Guide des paysages culturels de Porto-Novo (Guide to cultural landscapes of Porto-Novo) Financed by: Agence intergouvernementale de la francophonie Date: published in November 2001 Coordination: Jardin des plantes et de la nature Editor: EPA The guide shows in 98 illustrated pages the town of Porto-Novo and its surroundings. Web site on African art: Date: June to December 2001 Numibia.net Display in one place information on African arts. Give to people interested in art and history of art in Africa an easily accessible research tool. Financed by: Division of cultural heritage of UNESCO Amount : US$ 5

6 Create and consolidate a network of institutional and private correspondents specialised in Africa. Promote African art. Promote contemporary artists. Facilitate enquiries in case of theft. V. Other activities Date: launched on February 12, 2001 Place: Porto-Novo Académie des Fées Number of participants: 4 primary schools of Porto-Novo Financed by: EPA-Benin to improve the quality of African children's lives (aged 6 to 14) by suggesting activities which develop their cultural and artistic sensitivity. This is essential for the preservation of the positive values of creativity and innovation. Signature of a cooperation contract between EPA and EAMAU (Ecole africaine des métiers de l'architecture et de l'urbanisme) on 06/02/2001 in Porto-Novo. Promotion and prospection mission of EPA in the USA, from March 27 to April 11, financed by the Ford Foundation. Teaching of 20 participants for the ICOM-MAC "New technologies for museums" workshop, from August 22 to 25, Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean. Amount: US$ Generation 2: participation in the workshop for the conception of pedagogical material for the training of trainers of the PREMA (EPA-PMDA) network, at ICCROM, Rome. Financed by the Getty Grant Programme. Participation in the round table "Quelle approche du tourisme culturel? Le rôle de l'unesco", organised by UNESCO's Slave route project on 26/10, Paris-France 6
