1 Aims: To gain an understanding of the key themes and ideas of Lesson Key Question Learning Objectives (develop skill, knowledge or understanding of...) Text Revision booklet knowledge of and criteria Students to annotate the language used to describe the setting. Write a answering about what we learn about the Birling family from the stage directions at the beginning of the play Read Act 1 Discuss the hierarchy within the household. Rank the characters in term of their status. All students will have an awareness of the setting of the play and be starting to relate it to it social, historical context Most students will have an understanding of the setting of the play and the importance of the social and historical context. Some students will have begun to explore the social and historical context of the play

Read to the end of the Inspector s questioning of Birling. Students select quotations that link Birling s actions to the information gathered about working and living conditions of the working classes in 1912 Discuss how Priestly presents Inspector Goole at this point in the play 3 Re- read the entrance of the Inspector from the lines before the doorbell rings to Edna s line Inspector Goole. What is dramatic and symbolic about this entrance? What is the inspector s role? Complete act 1

Ask students, on a scale of 1-10, to what extent they believe Gerald really cared for Eva Smith/ Daisy Renton. Explain the decisions. Read Act 2 Discuss the tension between Sheila and Gerald.

Also, her dawning realisation of Eric s involvement. How is Mrs Birling presented in the second half of Act 2? Self-assessment against the exam criteria 6. How does Priestly explore different social classes in this play? Who said it?

Read to the end of the play
