4 Preface It is now well accepted that time to market for new products can be reduced and practical value of goods can be increased most effectively by the application of advanced cybernetics and computational intelligence. The above recognition motivated this book addressing, in a single volume, selected contributions, in important areas, from two relevant conferences. The 10th International Conference on Intelligent Engineering Systems (INES 2006) and the 4th International Conference on Computational Cybernetics (ICCC 2006) were held in year 2006 to provide researchers and practitioners from industry and academia with a platform to report on recent developments in cybernetics and computational intelligence. INES and ICCC are organized as annual scientific events and founded by Professor Imre J. Rudas in 1997 and 2003, respectively. In earlier years, classical concept of artificial intelligence proved merely partial solution for problem of intelligent systems. During the recent years, researchers and experts were keen in merging intelligent elements in different engineering and technical systems. Computational Cybernetics is the synergetic integration of Cybernetics and Computational Intelligence techniques. Hence the topics of Intelligent Engineering Systems and Computational Cybernetics cover not only mechanical, but biological (living), social and economical systems and for this purpose uses computational intelligence based results of communication theory, signal processing, information technology, control theory, the theory of adaptive systems, the theory of complex systems (game theory, operational research), and computer science. Recently, engineering activities are integrated in virtual spaces. Human scientific knowledge gained importance in tasks such as the creation of complex product descriptions, modeling of processes and working conditions, optimizing parameter sets, and handling problems in large, complex and dynamic systems. In this volume, a thematic selection of significant papers represent of recent emphases among others in topics such as dynamic analysis, fuzzy process model, semantic Web, document clustering, harmonic drive systems, fault diagnosis, Internet traffic, non-linear filters, genetic algorithms, behavioral characteristics, fractional controllers, complex systems, evolutionary optimization, force-impedance control, associative engineering objects, model of natural languages, and fractional representations.
