2 About this Series The series Studies in Big Data (SBD) publishes new developments and advances in the various areas of Big Data- quickly and with a high quality. The intent is to cover the theory, research, development, and applications of Big Data, as embedded in the fields of engineering, computer science, physics, economics and life sciences. The books of the series refer to the analysis and understanding of large, complex, and/or distributed data sets generated from recent digital sources coming from sensors or other physical instruments as well as simulations, crowd sourcing, social networks or other internet transactions, such as s or video click streams and other. 5 Preface It is our great pleasure to present this volume of Operations Research and Big Data, as the proceedings of the event IO 2015, the XVII Congress of the Portuguese Association of Operational Research, APDIO, held this year in Portalegre, Portugal. Through this conference we would like to highlight the contributions of the Portuguese Operational Research community to society with the focus of Operational Research and Big Data. This conference serves as a forum for scientific community and practitioners of operational research to discuss the current challenges that need to be addressed, and, to highlight new developments in the applications of methods, algorithms, and tools to solve a wide range of both real world and theoretical problems. IO 2015 includes three keynote lecturers from well-known experts in the area, Ayse Basar Bener (Ryerson University, Canada), António Pais Antunes (University of Coimbra, Portugal), and José Fernando Oliveira (University of Porto, Portugal). In addition close to 95 works will be presented, from which 29 papers have been accepted and published in this volume. These papers cover wide range of Operational Research topics and have been peer-reviewed by the scientific committee. We thank the scientific committee members for their timely and thorough reviews. We thank the IO 2015 Organization Committee for the materialization of this volume and finally, we also want to thank all the authors for their high quality manuscripts and for submitting them on time. We do hope the contents of this volume will serve as valuable reference to the scientific community and practitioners of operational research and a permanent record of the IO 2015 conference.
