4 Editorial Preface Many trips by car or train are nowadays leisure trips. And most passengers on board of an airplane are tourists. Indeed, we enter an age of large-scale tourism, for the time being in the industrialized part of the world, but soon to be followed by mass tourism trends in emerging economies. Consequently, tourism will become a major factor of economic growth in the future. In the past decades, we have witnessed an increasing volume of publications on tourist-economic issues, sometimes of a case study nature, sometimes of a statistically-modelling nature and sometimes of a conceptual or methodological nature. It turns out that tourism research is on a rising edge, and it is likely that this trend will continue in the future. The present volume follows this trend and offers a collection of systematically selected and original research papers on new economic perspectives on tourism research and policy. Most papers were initially presented at an international conference on tourism-economic research in Evora, Portugal in After a careful screening and revision process, this has led to the current volume with contributions by authors from various parts of the world.
