Gajjar Dear Students & Faculty Members, It is a matter of great happiness that third quarterly issue of VGEC News, 2017 is brought to you. India is fastest growing country and one among the largest economic power. The entrepreneurs from India are noticed at world platform. Industrial, technological, and scientific development is accelerating at a very fast rate. In such an environment, industry demands highly qualified, skilled, efficient and well trained engineers. We, at VGEC, are trying our best to train our students as per the requirements of industry. As a student you must be excited to make your own contribution to the growth and development of economy. At VGEC, we have a tradition of nurturing entrepreneurship qualities along with developing capabilities to use the state of art technologies. This we do by inspiring our students to take up innovative projects under the guidance of their faculties. We have funded as well as awarded by our state government for the same. With the support of a world class curriculum, excellent infrastructure, and a team of experienced and enthusiastic faculty, we have been providing technical education of a high quality. It has also been our aim to create an ecosystem of innovation, leadership and interpersonal skills.

3 Achievements at Student Startup and Innovation Policy Prize Distribution At Student Startup and Innovation Policy Prize distribution event organized at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar the two student teams of VGEC won the 1st and 2nd state awards in the Social Innovation category. Prachi Thakkar and team who won the first prize and Rs. 25,000 have developed an Android App PregaCare for pregnant ladies. This App will help reduce infant mortality rate and support pregnant ladies during their pregnancy. Urjit Dave and Team won the second prize of Rs. 15,000 by the Hon. CM, has started Vishwakarma Digital Literacy Campaign to teach computer basics to the underprivileged and backward communities. Apart from that, Vishwakarma Government Engineering College was given 1.2 Cr fund under SSIP. VGEC has always kindled the entrepreneurial hunch in its students through various student-driven activities and clubs like e-cell, Heritage Club, Robotics Club and NSS. 03

4 All India Seminar on Fundamentals and Trends in Additive Manufacturing Mechanical Engineering Department organized an All India seminar on Fundamentals and Trends in Additive Manufacturing in association with IEI Students Chapter on July The experts invited were Dr. U. Chandrasekhar, Pro-Vice Chancellor, VELTECH University, Chennai, Dr. Sarang Pandey, Principal, Marwadi Education Foundation of Institutions, Rajkot, Mr. Keyur Punjani, Founder Star dust technology, Mr. Guruprasad K. Rao, Director, Imaginarium Pvt Ltd, Dr. Pavankumar Gurrala, Asst Professor at PDPU, Mr. Paresh Deshpande, owner of 3DPLABS, Kolhapur and Mr. Sagar Kariya, Altem. 165 students participated in this seminar, which was found highly informative and interactive with so many national experts industry available on the panel. National Integration Camp (NIC) National Integration Camp is a 7 day camp in which NSS Volunteers from different states come together to celebrate rich Indian Culture. Vishwakarma Government Engineering College is proud of being selected for organizing the National Integration Camp at Gujarat in National Integration camp at VGEC involved 250+ NSS Volunteers with their Programme officers from 14 different states. The main highlight were interactive sessions with live videos from experts from ISRO, PRL, Airforce, CEPT and University Vice Chancellors, besides Yoga, Shramdaan, Academic Sessions, Heritage of States of India, Multilingual Cultural Evenings, Cross Cutting ideas for Nation Development, Social Innovation, Competitions and a lot more. NIC team of VGEC worked diligently which was an activity under NSS. It was organised during 12th August to 18th August, There was a Participation of 14 states and 250+ students. It was a 7 - Day residential Program. It was addressed by State and National level achievers. The event was sponsored by Commissionerate of Technical Education, State NSS Cell, and Government of Gujarat. 04

5 The 3 dau Programme was coordinated by various HODs, Prof. Alpesh Dafda (NSS Programme officer), Student Coordinators Ms. Saloni parikh & Mr. Urvish Morvaniya under guidance of our principal Dr. R. K Gajjar. The various events organized during camp included plenary sessions, rally, ideathon, workshop on Sustainable Development goals, Tug of War, group discussions, state exhibition and photography, cultural night, yoga sessions, flag hoisting, Human Logo formation, elocution competition, poster designing, and essay writing. The Plenary Session was organized in the presence of Chief Guest Shri Bhupendrasinh Chudasama Hon ble Cabinet Minister of Education, Gujarat, Shri Jaydrathsinh Parmar Hon ble Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Smt. Anju Sharma Principal Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, Shri K.K Nirala Commissionerate of Technical Education, Dr. Navin Sheth Hon ble Vice Chancellor GTU, Dr. Rajul Gajjar Principal VGEC, Shri Kamal Kumar Kar Regional Diector, NSS Ahmedabad Regional Directorate. 05

6 Plethora of Activities- VGEC-NSS Innovation in Tree Plantation Continuing its trend of innovation, NSS this time introduced a concept of tree adoption and tree doctor. A student from NSS, Kevan Shah, acquired the title of Tree Doctor and promised to take care of trees and help out any tree in danger in the campus. Moreover, to protect trees from cattle and environmental damage, tree guards were affixed around the saplings. More than 150 students and faculties adopted trees of campus and promised to nurture them right from planting the sapling. On the whole, the event had plantation of shady trees like neem and asopalav and medicinal saplings of tulsi. The Blood Donation Camp and Thalassaemia Testing As said, one bottle of blood can save 3 lives on an average. A person should donate blood once in every three months, indirectly saving a lot of lives. To take this noble cause on a larger scale and promote blood donation in youth, NSS Unit of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College organized a Blood Donation Camp on 18th September The event saw a presence of 800+ students and faculty 06

7 members to support the cause. 138 bottles of blood were collected. Civil hospital was the supporting organization for this event. Along with blood donation, Thalassemia Test was also organized for the students. 644 students undertook Thalassemia test which was supported by Red Cross Society. Smart Jagruti Utsav Rally The NSS at VGEC has organized a Smart Jagruti Utsav Rally : An awareness regarding dry and wet waste. It is an initiative towards Clean India. The rally was organised on 17th September The VGEC- NSS volunteers enthusiastically spread awareness of cleanliness among citizen near the institute. They also contributed their service in cleanliness of surrounding area near VGEC. 07

8 Workshop on ISRO Satellite Receiver (NavIC) Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering has organized one day workshop on Satellite Receiver (NavIC) in collaboration with SAC (ISRO), Ahmedabad on 11th August The objective of this workshop was to bring awareness among faculty members of engineering colleges in Gujarat about our own Indian Navigation System NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) so that students can be guided by faculty members to take up projects and research on NavIC. Thirty faculty members from different engineering colleges of Gujarat participated in the workshop. Experts from ISRO were invited to deliver talks as well as hands on session on NavIC receiver. Prof. R. K. Gajjar (Principal, VGEC Chandkheda) talked about importance of navigation system in our day-to-day life. Dr. Subroto Mukherjee, Academic Dean, Institute of Plasma Research, Ahmedabad was the Guest of Honor, and briefed participants about various ongoing projects of IPR. He mentioned about how academicians and students can collaborate with IPR to carry out research work and contribute in ongoing projects of IPR. Shri. N. M. Desai, Deputy Director SAC, ISRO was the chief guest of inauguration session. He discussed in detail about how NAVIC can be taken up in various projects and utilized like GPS. 08

9 Seminar on Indian Navy The training and placement cell of the institute organized an awareness seminar about Indian Navy on 5th July 2017 at Vishveshwaray auditorium. The main aim of the event was to familiarize the students with Indian Navy and its recruitment processes. The 3rd, 5th and 7th semester students along with 4 faculties of different departments had participated in the event. The lecture was delivered by Capt. J. K. Chaudhary from Indian Navy Mumbai. He has 32 years of experience in various fields of Indian Navy. He provided knowledge about entries in Indian Navy and Training at Indian Naval Academy. Workshop on "Energy Conservation and Awareness" The Electrical Engineering Department organized GEDA sponsored one day workshop on Energy Conservation and Awareness on 19/9/2017 at Vishveshwaray auditorium. Main Objective of this Workshop is to create energy conservation awareness in final year and pre final year students. Students are motivated and committed to save energy by reducing energy wastage and learn many techniques by which they can conserve energy. Experts discuss about various loop holes present in industrial equipment which help to students for betterment of their carrier in industry. Expert also discusses problems and solution of various equipments used in industry. One Day Workshop on Innovation A one day workshop on How to Identify and Nurture Innovative Projects was organized at Vishveshwaray auditorium on 5/8/2017. All the faculty members of various Department of the institute were participated in this workshop. How Design Engineering is helpful to Nurture Innovative Projects & its impact - was emphasized by Prof. M. T.Savalia, Prof. N. D. Mehta and Mr. Mihir Trivedi during their session of the workshop. Dr. R. K.Gajjar Principal, VGEC, Chandkheda, addressed the audience with a warm welcome to newly joined faculties and emphasized on making innovative projects, paper publications and patenting of successful projects of previous year. She shared her thought with faculties in a very simple manner by defining and explaining the role of Design Engineering in Innovative Projects. 09

10 Elocution and Essay writing Competition Prof M T Savaliya has organized and coordinated an Elocution and Essay Writing Competition on gaurav gaan Vaishnav jan to tene re kahiye and Manushya tu bada mahan he which was arranged as per circular from Knowledge Consortium of Guajrat, Department of Education, Government of Gujarat. This competition was organized in two rounds. The first round was organized on 20 july 17 and the second round was held on 27th july Total 51 students have participated in the competition. Prof. Vaseem Qureshi, Prof. Dipak Bhatt, Prof. Vaishali Patel, Prof. U. A. Yadav, and Prof Y B Bhavasar gave their service as judges in this event. The winners of Elocution competition were Pipaliya Parth( IT) Radha Govani (CE) and Vishal Ahir(IT) who stood first, second and third respectively. The winners of Essay Writing competition were Dakshyani Raina ( CE) Navadiya Mansi (CE) and Radha Govani (CE) who stood first, second and third respectively. 10

11 Exhibition on Save Water On 19th and 20th September, 2017 two day exhibition was organized at Civil Engineering Department on the topic of Save Water with co-ordination of Water Management Forum. In which 42 banners were displayed, this was representing the uses of water, conservation of water, rain water harvesting etc. On this event inauguration was done by Principal of VGEC, Dr.Rajul K. Gajjar and Chief engineer Mr.M.P.Raval. Over 2000 students were present from the different branches of engineering on this exhibition. Short movie was also shown to students to aware them about the importance of water in human life. Technical/Industrial Visits A technical visit to Karai syphon and Sant sarovar dam was arranged on 11th September, 2017 for 7th semester students of civil engineering department. 72 students and 3 faculties were part of the visit. Karai syphone is situated at Nana chiloda, Gandhinagar and Sant sarovar is situated at Gandhinagar. It was a one day tour in which the main objective of this visit was to enable the practical knowledge and to aware students about the operation of dam. 11

12 A technical visit was arranged on 16th September, 2017 to Kadana Dam and Wanakbori Weir for the final year students of civil engineering department. 73 students and 4 faculties were part of the visit. It was a one day tour from morning 5 am to 1 am of night. As the location was far from Ahemdabad, it took the whole day for completion of visit. This visit was very helpful for the students as they are having Irrigation Engineering subject in their syllabus, so by this visit they would be able to know the components of the dam and practical working of dam. An Industrial Visit to Adani Enterprises was organized by Mechanical Department on 13th & 14th September 2017 under Project Udaan of Adani Act. In this visit, the students visited to Adani Mundra Port, Adani Wilmar & Adani Power Limited. There were total 76 students of 3rd & 4th year along with 4 faculties (Dr. A.B. Dhruv, Prof. R.B. Shah, Prof. Manish Parmar, Prof. D.B. Patel). The visit was truly professional and well managed till the end. Student Achievements Dept. 14 Departmental Activities: Chemical Department 70 students of BE Semester III,V,VII of chemical Engineering Department have attended on Paradigm shift in Chemical Engineering Education, Processes and technoly on September Civil Department On 6th September, 2017 Science Express has been arrived at Khodiyar railway station, Ahmedabad. 50 students of 5th semester and 2 faculties have been a part of this very different experience of technical visit. The objective of this Science Train was to aware people about the global environmental issues and measures to save the environment. Computer Department Expert lecture on Data Science for Management was arranged on 26/7/2017. Number of participants are 75 students and 2 faculties. The broad goal behind this activity was to empower students to become Digital Data Managers for Business, a rapidly expanding and highly rewarding job which takes advantage of the digital revolution. Expert lecture on Awareness of Higher Studies at Abroad was arranged on 31/7/2017. Number of participants are 105 students and 1 faculty. Objective of this lecture is to create awareness among students regarding importance of Verbal and Communication skills and to discuss relevance of above skills in various tests like GRE/IELTS/TOEFL etc. They also discussed the opportunities for M Tech in Computer Science at abroad. Seminar on importance of GATE was arranged by ICE on 31/7/2017 and 2/8/2017. Total 140 students are participated in this seminar. EC Department Department of Electronics and Communication has organized two week training for western railway supervisors on Power Electronics from 11 September 17 to 25th September Total 20 participants from western railway attended this training. Electrical Department Expert Lecture on Control system Engineering was organized on 10/7/2017 at Room number C-205 by Prof. S.R.Joshi who is having wide experience in teaching as well as wide application of control system fundamentals in real time situation. Approx. 110 students and 5 faculty members have participated. Under Project Udaan of Adani Foundation, 7 th semester students of Electrical Engineering Department of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda visited Adani Port, Adani Power & Adani Wilmar facilities situated at Mundra, Kutch. These visit falls under major activity head of Technical/ Research skill with sub-activity head of Industrial / Exhibition Visit with Report. The visit was organized for two days on 18/07/2017 & 19/07/2017. Total 76 students (5 girls & 71 boys) took benefit of this noble initiative of Adani Foundation. A Technical Film show on "I ROBOT movie" was organized on 28/08/2017 at Dr. Vikrambhai Sarabhai hall. The event was mainly organized for the students of BE First year to understand the technological advancement used in making ROBOT. The aim of this event is to aware students about robotics technology and issues which are faced in making ROBOT. Also they become aware about the legal issues related to ROBOT if they committee crime. General Department A seminar on VEDIC youth club was arranged on 29th august 2017 for first year students. It was a part of life skill subject. Students were taught about pillars of leadership, how we should not forget to live our life in pursuit of achieving life style, increasing quality of our life instead of 14

15 just targeting quantity and transforming the heart from the viruses like lust, greed, pride, anger etc. The seminar also focuses on antivirus for the above mentioned viruses. IC Department Expert lecture on PLC DCS Architecture and its control protocol was arranged for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students on July 12, 2017 from 10:30am to 12:30pm at A- Block Auditorium. The main aim of the event was to familiarize the students with Architecture and control of PLC and DCS. The speaker was Mr. Jatin Shah from Honeywell Automation, Bangalore. He is also alumni of VGEC. Initiated Institute of Engineer s (India) (IEI) Student Chapter at Instrumentation and Control Department of VGEC on 19th September, Total 30 students have participated in this event. The topics discussed are Introduction of the IEI student chapter, the Rules and Regulation of the IEI, benefit from chapter membership, and selections of student body. IT Department Expert Lecture on Spring Hibernate Integration was delivered by Mr. Jay Shah Tata Consulting Services on 20/8/2017 for 5th and 7th semester students. The main aim of the event was to familiarize the students with the Spring Framework integrated with Hibernate Technology and to clarify their doubts regarding the upcoming campus interviews. Students also learnt various Applications of the Technologies in the ever-changing IT field. Power Electronics Department Power Electronics Department had organized Industrial visit to Veeral Controls Pvt. Ltd, Veer Electronics and Amtech Electronics on 20/9/2017. Students visited the testing and quality assurance department of industries where they got information about temperature controller, resister temperature detector, PID controllers and their uses, then they visited motor drives section where they got information about dc motor drives and view live operation showing how its working, and its applications in different industries. Mechanical Department An Industrial Visit for 3rd semester students was arranged on 15th July, 2017 at Energy Mission Pvt. Ltd., Vatva. Total 45 students along with Prof. R.B. Shah and Prof. M.M.
