Title and abstract of Ph. D. thesis: Study on application of steam and horizontal well technology to improve heavy oil recovery. Production of heavy oil from hydrocarbon reservoirs poses challenges due to reservoir rock and fluid properties, greater depth, high pressure and temperature conditions. Initial oil in place in Indian heavy oilfields is about 150 MMT. Their estimated primary recovery component is between % from field to field and improved oil recovery component is between % for various thermal recovery methods, out of which more than 7 % has already been produced from some of the fields. Introduction of heat into the heavy oil reservoir is the key to reduce the viscosity and enhance the mobility of viscous heavy crude oil. Hence, the first objective of this research work was to undertake experimental modeling and investigate the application of steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process using horizontal well technology. In a two dimensional scaled heavy oil reservoir model SAGD production performance was

2 estimated using single vertical steam injector well and horizontal production well. In a three dimensional unscaled model that was fabricated, laboratory set up was arranged and experiments were conducted to optimize structural position of vertical steam injection well with reference to given production well and reservoir conditions for the maximum possible recovery factor. Production performance of one or two vertical injector wells at a time and only one horizontal production well every time was verified and calculated. These wells were fixed at different positions inside the model while conducting the experiments. Scope for the field application of experimental modeling of SAGD process and findings was investigated by identifying gravity inside the reservoir. For this purpose, suitable existing non productive vertical wells were identified and considered as steam injectors while horizontal wells as producers to improve the heavy oil recovery. It was seen that, benefits of the steam assisted gravity drainage process can be attained if we can select and utilize the advantageous structural position of the injector well and production well inside the reservoir. Methodology for the optimization of vertical injection well position, in a steam flooding program has been worked out and elaborated in this study. To verify and support the research work an analytical simulator, a software program has been developed. This is useful to analyze production performance of steam assisted gravity drainage process and application of various mathematical models. On the basis of experimental work and study conducted on steam injection processes it is concluded that; in certain heavy oil fields of Indian basins, application of steam injection and horizontal well technology provide a viable commercial option to improve heavy oil recovery, on long term basis. Formation of a localized steam chamber by injecting steam from existing, non productive, up dip vertical wells could be a very good option to improve the recovery factor of Indian heavy oil fields.
