1 PIR Motion Detector Experiment I. Rationale In today s crime infested society, security systems have become a much more necessary and sought out addition to homes or stores. Motion detectors provide a basic level of protection for valuable items or for homes. For things that are not as important, however, a simple PIR motion detector makes a great form of security for apartments or a private room. It is inexpensive and is relatively simple to build. The program can be coded to send your phone a message whenever the sensor detects a change in the infrared signals, or it can set off an alarm. II. Engineering Goals and Expected Outcomes The goal for this experiment is to make a functioning PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor using an Arduino board. This sensor should be able to perform specific tasks as well, such as lighting an LED. III. Objectives The PIR Motion Sensor should be able to accurately detect the change in the infrared signals, send a signal to the arduino, light an LED, and set off a buzzer.
2 IV. Procedures A. Materials: - Buzzer - LED - PIR Sensor - Solderless Breadboard - Arduino Uno Microcontroller - Computer with Arduino Software installed - USB Cable - Solderless Breadboard Jumper Cable Wire Kit B. Steps: 1. Take a jumper cable from the breadboard jumper cable wire kit and use it to connect digital (I/O) pin 2 on the Arduino to the first row on the breadboard. 2. Use another cable to connect the 5 volt pin on the Arduino to the second row of the breadboard. 3. Connect a ground pin to the third row of the breadboard. 4. Take the PIR Sensor and locate the Ground pin, the Vcc pin, and the Out pin. 5. Connect the Ground pin on the sensor to the same row as the Ground pin that the Arduino is connected to (the third row). 6. Connect the Vcc pin on the sensor to the same row that the 5 volt pin from the Arduino
3 is on (the second row). 7. Connect the Out pin on the sensor to the same row that the digital (I/O) pin 2 from the arduino is on (the first row). 8. On the Arduino, take the LED and plug in the longer leg to pin 13, and plug in the shorter leg to the ground pin. 9. Take the buzzer, and plug its black wire to either pin 10, or another ground pin. The red wire of the buzzer will go into the other slot. 10. Connect the Arduino to the computer with the software using a USB cable. 11. Open the Arduino software on the computer, and go under the tools section in the toolbar/menu. From there, go to Board and Serial Port and select the Arduino that is being used for the experiment (this project uses the Arduino Uno). 12. Upload a pre made program to the Arduino, or create an original program and upload it (pre made programs for the Arduino can be found online). 13. Power on the Arduino with the computer, and leave the room while the PIR sensor is calibrating. 14. After the sensor is done calibrating, the motion detector is finished, and any movement within 20 feet of it will trigger the alarm, and light the LED. 15. Disabling and reactivating the alarm can be done on the Arduino software. V. Risk and Safety Risks include burning when soldering wires to the arduino/board. To eliminate this threat, a solderless breadboard is used to prevent the need for soldering. Electrocution is also a possibility, but power can be cut off when not in use to reduce
4 risk. Rubber gloves will be used to further lower the risk of electrocution. The experiment will be done at home in a private area to keep other people safe and to keep the device undamaged. Supervision will not be required. VI. Data Analysis Different objects and people will be placed in the path of the sensor. The device s ability to detect the changes in its sensor and ability to send a signal to the arduino board when this change is detected will gauge the machine s completion and functionality. VII.
