Vision, anticipated developments and collaborations Friday 28 June TTO Circle meeting at CERN Jean-Marie Le Goff, PhD, DPhil Senior physicist CERN
Intro to Collaboration Spotting How does it work? What problem does it solve? What s next?
Developed at CERN by Physicists The Team (06/13): Adam AGOCS Sotirios FRAGKISKOS Jean-Marie LE GOFF (PL) Eirik SKOGSTAD We developed the program to help us figure out who the key players at the cutting edge of the 100s of research fields CERN is active in are. Realised this could be much more widely applicable which is where you can help!
What is Collaboration Spotting? Software developed at CERN Identifies relationships between institutions and visualises them Visualise clusters, who works with whom and who is active in your field of interest Find closely related topics and hidden connections Powerful data-mining and visualisation algorithms can be expanded to new areas
Sifts Publications and Patents: Who works with Whom? In principle, can include any kind of databases where authorship can be attributed to different organisations/entities what else would you like to see here?
How Collaboration Spotting Works Data-mining from patent, publication etc. databases (see last slide) Whose names appear together a lot? Which keywords appear in the same kinds of clusters?
Using Social Network Analysis and Graph Theory to Visualise Complex Relationships Easily Pretty, huh? Assign a value to how correlated each two data points (nodes) are, e.g. how many papers have these two institutes jointly published? In a network graph, data points with a large degree of correlation end up clustering together. Additionally: thicker connections (edges) = stronger correlation, larger dots = more prominent data points. Can spot key players and relationships at a glance, detect underlying patterns.
Ex: Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) 393 Publications 8
Ex: MPGD Publications Key players 9
Ex: MPGD Publications Key players - Centrality 10
Ex: Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) - 94 Patents 11
Some features Researchers: find relevant collaborators Industry: target less-contested areas for R&D Lawyers: Patent landscapes Investors: Spot opportunities and buyers Basically anyone who wants a rapid, easily digestible summary of who is who in an area of interest and all the hidden links between them.
Find new collaboration Technology: Medipix for pixel detector Use case: Institution having developed a new photon detection material Look for Key players: Medipix + Bump bonding Contacts with publications 13
Positioning an organisation wrt a technology: CERN wrt MPGD 14
Finding other technologies of an organisation 15
Finding other technologies of an organisation (2) 16
Impact of an organisation s publications (citations) Strongly cited Weakly cited Size Colour Impact of node represents number of publications/patents of node represents its impact factor. Darker nodes are cited more than lighter-coloured ones. 17
Positioning a RI wrt to a technology ex: Germanium detectors 43 patents Publications Patents No patent for CNRS-IN2P3 18
Looking closer to collaborations 19
Assessing the impact of an event Topical events, technical workshops and conferences are prone to foster collaborations Ex: Technology Academia meets industry on Silicon- Photomultiplier Organisation name Pubs 2010 Pubs 2013 ΔP CERN CIEMAT CNRS-IN2P CPTA_Moscow CSIC DESY EPFL ETHZ FBK FNAL GSI INAF INFN KETEK_GmbH Kernfys_Versneller_Inst Increase No increase Organisation name Pubs 2010 Pubs 2013 ΔP MPI PSI Photek_Ltd Pulsar_Enterprise STMicroelectronics Univ_AGH_Sci_&_Technol Univ_Glasgow Univ_Heidelberg Univ_Insubria Univ_Leicester Univ_Napoli_Federico_ Univ_Oxford Univ_Pisa Univ_Roma_ Univ_Siena Univ_Surrey Univ_Tech_Delft Univ_Udine
