What is design? Design, usually considered in the context of the applied arts, engineering, architecture, and other such creative endeavors, is used as both a noun and a verb. "Design" as a verb refers to the process of originating and developing a plan for a new object (machine, building, product, etc.). As a noun, "design" is used both for the final plan or proposal (a drawing, model, or other description), or the result of implementing that plan or proposal (the object produced). Designing normally requires considering aesthetic, functional, and many other aspects of an object, which usually requires considerable research, thought, modeling, iterative adjustment, and re-design. Design as a process can take many forms depending on the object being designed and the individual or individuals participating. In philosophy, the abstract noun "design" refers to pattern, or to purpose/ purposefulness (or teleology). Design is thus contrasted with purposelessness, randomness, or lack of complexity. - Wikipedia, 8/22/2006
What is design?
Industrial Design Industrial design is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer. Industrial Designers Society of America
Industrial Design Design is a creative activity whose aim is to establish the multifaceted qualities of objects, processes, services and their systems in whole life-cycles. Therefore, design is the central factor of innovative humanization of technologies and the crucial factor of cultural and economic exchange. International Council of Societies of Industrial Designers

Typical Design Process From frog design: Phase 0 Discover Phase 1 Design Phase 2 Deliver
Ideation and Brainstorming are an essential part of Phase 0 The goal is to generate as many solutions as possible. Wild ideas are encouraged.
Sources of Inspiration Use everything you have at your disposal. Try not to get too bogged down by what already exists
Quantity Don t self edit. Remember that synthesis comes later.
Image: Sketches for a camera rental concept by student Aaron Moulton, Professor Mike Glaser Ideation will continue beyond the group session Exploration is valuable.
Image: Bell curve describing idea quality as described by Rolf Faste Professor of Design and Engineering at Stanford University More ideas are better than fewer Bell curve describing quality of ideas when as many as possible are generated
Immersion Keep all ideas visible at a glance during the discover phase
Facilitation Having a strong facilitator in place to guide the brainstorming and encourage idea generation is essential
