1 Year 11 PHYSICS ERT EXTENDED RESPONSE TASK Solar Spotlights SEMESTER TIME: 7 weeks LENGTH: 800 to 1000 words STUDENT NAME: GROUP MEMBERS: HANDOUT DATE: Wednesday DRAFT DATE: Week Beginning HAND IN DATE: Week Beginning ASSESSMENT: This will involve an A+ to E- rating in each of the following criteria. Standards associated with each criteria have been included as APPENDIX 1. Knowledge and Conceptual Understanding KCU Investigative Processes IP Evaluating and Concluding EC NB This Assessment Instrument will be used in determining your Year 12 Exit Level of Achievement. You may work in groups when collecting experimental data but any research and paperwork must be done on an individual basis. The 800 to 1000 word count applies to the Discussion, Conclusions and Evaluation. Ensure that you save your work on the School Network, USB Drive and on your Home Computer. It is also a good idea to it to yourself. Year 11 Physics ERT Solar Spotlights Page 1

2 INTRODUCTION: Whoever would have thought that an element found in common sand would have such an impact on the late 20 th century and the future. Silicon is the main component of semiconductor material that has become the foundation of modern technology. Computers, mobile phones and Ipods are just a few examples of commonly used technology. Semiconductor devices are also found in washing machines, toys and cars to mention but a few. In a time when green energy is becoming the way of the future, solar cells will play an important part in electricity generation. As time progresses, technology becomes less expensive and items such as solar powered garden lights can be purchased for less than $5 each. Solar cells are becoming more efficient, cheaper and more readily available. Light Emitting Diodes (LED S) are very energy efficient and emit a soft light ideal for garden lighting. Passive InfraRed Sensors (PIR S) detect motion and are now commonly used in security applications. In this activity you will be setting up Motion Sensor Controlled Solar LED Lights and conducting suitable tests. You will also be researching information in order to explain the operation of the setup and how it compares to earlier garden lighting systems. KEY CONCEPTS: 1. Metallic and Covalent Bonding 2. Atomic Structure of Boron, Silicon and Phosphorus 3. P type and N type doping 4. PN Junction Electric Field and the Diode 5. Photovoltaic cells and Photons of Light (Photon Energy and Light Frequency, E=hf) 6. Light Emitting Diodes LED s 7. Light Dependant Resistors LDR s 8. Passive InfraRed Motion Sensors PIR s TASK: You are to present an Extended Response to the following question; The Principles of Solid State Physics apply to modern Motion Sensor Controlled Solar Spotlight Kits. How does this technology compare to the technology associated with previous garden lighting systems? Your Extended Response should include primary/secondary data collected from experimentation/research. Note: Research on key concepts has no credit to the final result. The 800 to 1000 word count applies to the Discussion, Conclusions and Evaluations. This is where you need to display evidence to meet the criteria. You are NOT required to give a detailed explanation of any electronic circuitry involved, a simple overview will be sufficient. Year 11 Physics ERT Solar Spotlights Page 2

3 Presentation of the Assignment It is recommended that you present your work as follows: 1. Cover page showing the topic, relevant visual stimuli and your details. 2. Contents page. 3. Introduction to interest the reader and to provide a rationale for the question. 4. Heading for each of the Key concepts followed by an explanatory paragraph using suitable pictures/diagrams etc. to enhance the explanation. e.g. Metallic and Covalent Bonding Metallic bonding occurs when. 5. Body. You will need sub headings for the body of your ERT. You will need to come up with suitable headings to structure your response to the tasks question followed by explanatory paragraphs, including suitable pictures etc, showing how the key concepts have been applied. 6. Conclusion giving a response to the question and an overall analysis of the Solar Lights including an evaluation when compared to earlier garden lighting systems. 7. Bibliography. NB Reminder: The Discussion, Conclusions, and Evaluation of the ERT should contain a minimum of 800 words with an upper limit of approximately 1000 words. Your explanations should be simple, brief and straight to the point. This assignment is an informative text. Year 11 Physics ERT Solar Spotlights Page 3

4 Draft Feedback Name: Your draft should be as close as possible to your final submission. The following checklist is to ensure that you have covered all requirements. You should refer to the criteria sheet Appendix 1 for more information relating to the depth of treatment and characteristics required.
