2 August & September Programs Bill Hochmuth The August program was two presentations by two Club members. Will Schreier demonstrated a computer program he wrote to calculate various miter angles for mulit Bill Hochmuth sided and tapered shapes. It was in informative demonstration and Will has made the program available to anyone who requests it. John Gush presented 2 videos that were made in his shop by Fine Woodworking. One was Make an Oval Fan Inlay, a fast and repeatable method for cutting, shading, and assembling the veneers on this Federal-period decoration. The other A Jig for Cutting Flutes and Reeds, a shop made lathe accessory that lets you cut precise flutes and reeds in tapered Federal-style legs. Both videos are available at At the September 17 th meeting of the DuPage Woodworkers Mark Miller will visit for the second time this year to demonstrate and talk about bending wood and making and working with curves. Mark will discuss several ways of Guests & Visitors We had one guest at the August meeting: Sanford E. Leake Jr. who lives in Wheaton. He was referred to us by Owl Hardwood. Sanford has made some exotic furniture for his family and is a retired IBMer. He would like to get involved in lathe turning. He will find many lathe turners at DuPage Woodworkers willing to help. Milford Lau John Gush presents 2 videos made in his shop by Fine Woodworking Will Schreier presents his miter angle computer program dealing with the intimidating issue of curved surfaces. Many of us are most comfortable when working wood in the flat perspective (excepting wood spinning on a lathe), but shy away from anything that requires curves. There are several ways to accomplish a curved surface including steam bending (a popular method for Windsor chairs), soaking in water (Shaker boxes), laminating thin strips and bending over a form, using wood products made specifically for bending, solid wood bending over a form up to certain thicknesses depending on species, and others. Mark will cover/demonstrate some of these and talk about good/bad woods for this purpose, glue types, vacuum and forms. If Mark s session on veneering was a look into his knowledge of working wood you can prepare yourself for another interesting and educational demonstration. Coffee, Coffee, Coffee Dave Gustafson and George McKissick will host the September meeting. Our thanks to Bill Eck and Charlie Scheffel for hosting the August meeting. Milford Lau September Door Prizes This months' door prizes will feature an 8" slow speed bench grinder, a Groz soothing plane and a set of forstner bits. Thanks to Al Didier for his donation of a scroll-sawn cross to St James Church for its auction. Len Swanson Page 2 September, 2008 Vol. 14, Issue 9
3 Dic Drees From Our Library I have two new books to tell you about this month. The first one is Bill Hylton's Ultimate Guide to the Router Table, by Bill Hylton. He writes," Mounting a router in a table increases its usefulness by leaps and bounds, allowing one to easily create moldings, make frame-and-panel doors, perform complex joinery, and cut all sorts of shapes and patterns, among other things." Hylton shows you how to put this shop workhorse through its paces, performing everything from shaping moldings and crafting beautiful frame-and-panel cabinet doors to cutting precision joints, including splines, dadoes, rabbets, box joints, sliding dovetails, glue joints, and many others. All of the techniques presented in this book are tried-and-true approaches for unleashing the capabilities of your own router table. Chances are good that this book will turn it into one of the most used tools in your Dic Drees shop. The second book is Sculpted Band Saw Boxes by Lois Keener Ventura. A reviewer writes, "Woodworkers love making boxes and a band saw box allows creativity that just can't be found in other woodworking. Of the band saw builders today, few have shared their work with other woodworkers, and none offer the sculpted artistry of Lois Ventura's work. In her newest book, she provides step-by-step photos and instructions for eight new designs (plus plans for 12 more) along with a chapter devoted to the most repeated steps in each of the projects to avoid repetition. "From an insightful introduction in which she explains her approach to the art of making band saw boxes to the inspiration you'll find in her featured advanced pieces, this book will make you eager to start with the basic designs and move on to crafting and designing unique boxes for yourself, family, and special friends." That's it from Our Library for September, Dic Drees Activities (Continued from page 1) letter) Saturday November 8 from 10:00 AM to 12 Noon Shop tour at Dave Reilly's. 708 East St. Lemont, IL (Map to follow in the October Newsletter ). 4 The Woodworking Shows November The Woodworking Shows will be holding their annual woodworking show Friday, November 21- Sunday, November 23, It will be held at the Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center. In addition to our usual booth we will be having a lathe demonstration for at least 15 minutes each time, three times daily for all three days. I will be passing around a sign up sheet both to work the booth and to do lathe demonstrations. The items being demonstrated on the lathe will be small objects such as bottle stoppers, pens, ornaments, etc. We will also need plenty of all types of projects to display in our booth. If you have any questions or are unable to attend the general meeting but wish to participate please me at glrodgers@sbcglobal.net or call me at George Rodgers Woodcarving Exhibition and Competition October The DuPage Woodworkers Club is going to have 6-8' tables at the upcoming "Artistry in Wood" woodcarving exhibition and competition. The dates are Saturday and Sunday, October 25-26, Hours are 10 am to 4 pm each day. Setup is on Friday between 3:30 pm and 7 pm. It is being held at the DuPage County Fair Grounds. Although this is being hosted by the North Suburban Carvers we are being invited to display and sell other hand made wood items. Furniture items will not be allowed. Allowable items for sale include things such as jewelry boxes, puzzles, lathe turned objects, chip carvings, ornaments, etc. If you are interested in selling any of your items I will be passing around a sign up sheet at the next general meeting. They need to have a slate of officer candidates to present at the October general meeting. A number of the board members have served a long time and it would be good for some new club members to volunteer for fresh ideas. Please consider serving the club in The meeting adjourned at 8:18 p.m. Jerry Johnson Page 4 September, 2008 Vol. 14, Issue 9

6 Secretary s Report Wayne Maier called the Board Meeting of September 8, 2008 to order at 7:00 p.m. Present were Tom Milleman, Rick Ogren, Bruce Jerry Johnson Kinney, Dic Drees, Rich Rossio, Stan Anderson, George Rodgers, Len Swanson, Tim McIntyre, and Jerry Johnson. The minutes and treasurer s report for August were approved as submitted. Tim changed the number of members in the club to 120 for insurance purposes. The treasury has a minor cash flow problem caused by normal deficit spending at this time of the year plus a desire to not cash the CD early. Several members of the board renewed their memberships for 2009 early to alleviate the problem. Rick Ogren thanked Wayne Maier for running a hand plane seminar on September 6. He has a shop tour set up for November. George said the Woodshow will be November this year. It was decided to sign up for three tables. Volunteers will be solicited to provide 15-minute demos at the request of the show organizers. He also noted that the North Suburban Woodcarvers has a show on October and it was decided to ask for six tables there. In this Jerry Johnson Note Date case the club members will be able to sell their work. The board reconfirmed the fee of 5% of the sales price of items sold for those who work the show and 10% of the sales price for those who don t. Stan Anderson reported on the progress of the toy program. He has material for a large number of wheeled toys, whale crayon holders, hamburgers and some other toys. The toy workday will be at Wayne Maier s shop on Saturday, October 11. The club will furnish donuts and pizza. Wayne will call Si Skidmore to ask him to start the 2009 dues collection process.
