1 GENERAL MEETING MINUTES April 19, :00 PM Chatelech Secondary School, Science Classroom 117 CALL TO ORDER Kent Lindsey, President, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. MEMBERS INTRODUCE GUESTS Tom Hourigan presented Par Noren. Par introduced himself; he and his wife are fairly new part time residents on the Coast in the Sargeant Bay area. Par made it clear to the audience he likes woodworking but isn t yet very good at it. (Hopefully if he joins the Guild his skills will improve rapidly). PRESENTATION TOPIC; Router Fundamentals by Heinz Tigges and Dave Beauchesne. Introduction and thank you by Kent Lindsey. Part 1 Sliding Dovetail by Heinz Tigges Heinz gave an enlightening presentation of a drawer frame he made on his router table utilizing sliding dovetails. Heinz used photographs (overhead projector) to show the steps taken and the resulting physical sample of the drawer frame to explain the process. 1

2 Heinz made special note of some of the critical aspects of these sliding dovetails; o All material (stock) must be the same thickness. o Special care needed to get the set-up (dimensionally) correct. o You only get one try. Full and final cut is made in one pass! Reference material can be found at; Part 2 Router Fundamentals and Bits by Dave Beauchesne Dave gave a very informative overview of the myriad of routers and bits available including some history and evolution of both. Power woodworking routers had their start in the early 1900s. Around the late 50s early 60s with improved electric motor and router bit developments, woodworking routers really gained popularity in the woodworking community. Routers have evolved into very sophisticated, powerful woodworking tools that have to be treated with respect. They range in styles and models (trimmers, fixed base, plunge), speeds (some variable speed), horsepower (1 3½) and RPM (av. 25,000). Dave covered some of the most important elements for safe router use; o The collet that connects the motor to the shaft must be kept clean (no rust, etc.) to ensure it grabs the bit securely. o The shaft of router bits must be kept in good shape and not bottomed out when tightened into the collet. o Direction of cut is important, in most situations you want to feed the router against the rotation of the bit. Doing this will present the wood to the bit s cutting surfaces so the bit doesn t bite into it the wood and can t pull the router along. On a router table the feed direction is right to left the router is upside down- this reverses the bit s spin direction, so feed direction reverses also. o Dave also talked about router bits. Like just about everything, you get what you pay for. There are many varieties and makes, with and without bearings. Carbide cutting edges are now most common. o It was noted that Quality Saw in Vancouver does a good job (and very reasonably priced) of sharpening bits and saw blades. In summary, for best performance keep the collet clean, buy quality bits, keep bits sharp, pay attention to feed rate and feed direction and study up before you start! Kent thanked Heinz and Dave (and Ken who was unable to attend) for their most informative presentation. 2

3 COFFEE BREAK; SERVED BY RON JOHNSON, RICK BUDD AND KEVIN ROY BUSINESS MEETING FOLLOWED COFFEE BREAK AGENDA Adoption of agenda - A motion to adopt the agenda, which had been sent to the members prior to the meeting, was moved, seconded and carried. MINUTES - There being no errors or omissions noted, it was moved, seconded and carried the minutes of the March 8, 2016 general meeting be accepted. BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES None REPORTS FROM COMMITTEES AND OFFICERS Treasurer Chuck Lenfesty; ran through the income statement and balance sheet and reported the Guild is in a positive monetary position (details available on request). o Brian Lucas asked how the Guild might use some of its monies. The question has been deferred to the Board (will be added to the agenda of the next Board Mtg.) Committee Chair Dave Stamper; o 2x4 Challenge; June 21 at Coopers Green with a wine and cheese party, tickets are $15 per person and spouses are welcome (more the merrier). Dave (on behalf of the Guild) is soliciting more participation (Challengers). So far there are 6 participants, last year there were 14. Action: A separate notice requesting participation will be ed to all Guild members. o Beads of Courage; Dave spoke to the cause and Canadian s (currently Alberta based) involvement again (similar to last month s presentation). Dave would like those Guild members that are interested in participating to contact him. Action: Another notice will be sent out via to all members. Education Program Heinz Tigges Speakers ; o May meeting presentation will be from Albert Edge. Albert will tell his story about his life experiences with wood. Website Committee Report Kent Lindsey (for David Bell); reports there are corrections and updates being made to the website. o Kent reported draft minutes of monthly General Meetings are being posted to the website soon after they are prepared and sent out to the membership. 3

4 CORRESPONDENCE AND NEW BUSINESS 1. Sunshine Coast Arts Council; notice sent via to some Guild members (will forward copy to entire membership by separate ) advising of a Woodwork Show at the Arts Centre in Sechelt August 10 th September 11 th. o It s a juried woodworking show. Works in Wood at the Doris Crowston Gallery (the Arts Centre) in Sechelt at 5714 Medusa St. Sechelt. Action: Complete details of the event will be ed to all Guild members. 2. Brian Lucas; Brian made a request of the Guild to consider joining forces (participating) with the Sunshine Coast Quilters Guild in their annual trade show. They have dwindling numbers (not enough young people taking up quilting) and can t fill their annual trade show venue. o The suggestion/request was deferred to the next Board meeting. 3. Rick Crook; Rick reminded us that the April Tools event in Pender Harbour was coming up at the end of April (Saturday April 30 th ). There are 13 teams entered, 4 people per team, at 10 am the participants will be given an hour to plan, 3 hours to build and this year asked to bring a propane torch. Sounds like fun, come and watch. 4. Reminder; of Jef Keighley s shop sale, 8580 Redrooffs Rd. Halfmoon Bay. (ref. previous notice to all Guild members) preview for Guild members is Friday April 22, 1 4 pm., general public is Sunday April 24, 10 am 4 pm. 5. Dale Harvey; Dale brought in his table jig saw he is offering for sale to Guild members for $100. 5 SHOW & TELL / TIPS & TRICKS Dave Beauchesne: Displayed the hand planes he made at Inside Passage School. Ken Walker: Brought his Mobile Lattice Boom Crane (plans by Toys and Joys). 5

6 Brian Lucas: Showed his whirligig creation, Pouce Coupe. Brian says he always tries to build something that depicts Canadian culture. Albert Edge: Demonstrated his maple dory boat baskets. They are soaked in water at degrees F., bent and formed, left sit for 2 4 days then fastened and lastly finished with food grade oil. Mike Allegretti: Showed a picture and gave an explanation about the Peruvian walnut and cherry table he recently finished (sent to Guild members previously by ). 6
