Many changes have been implanted and Rich Rossio had some very good events have already occurred. We must give thanks for all the great events that have been planned and presented without any negative outcomes. In the past month we had our overnight Iowa Field trip. The planning by Tom Mileman and Milford Lau was great. This has to be the most enjoyable event I have ever been involved with. John Ressler gave a great presentation on making a guitar. Many of the techniques used in a guitar can be used in our other projects. Dave Reilly's workshop for carving went well. If other are interested in attending a seminar see Milford and possibly another seminar could be scheduled. Upcoming Events. Rich Rossio Dic Drees will present a seminar for making Shaker Boxes. This will be a very interesting experience for all attending. Don't forget our club annual auction. Start getting all the unneeded woodworking tools and supplies together to sell to get some cash to buy the needed tools. A list of rules for the auction will be available at the June meeting. We have a few events scheduled for the next few months. Seminars, Plant Tours and yet to be planned group projects. Watch the newsletter for details of upcoming events. 2 I'm reviewing an old, new book this month, The Caner's Handbook, by Bruce Miller and Jim Dic Drees Widess. It was recommended by our December, 05, speaker Mary Yonkers. This book is a descriptive guide to the restoration of cane and wicker furniture. The authors answer the basic problems encountered in restoring handwoven furniture and provide clear and simple instructions for some of the more complex techniques. There are detailed photographs and line drawings side by side with the text. Both the visual and the printed texts move in stepbystep motion, outlining the process needed to restore your chair. The illustrations are not merely supplemental but From Our Library Dic Drees form an integrated part of the instruction. In fact, in many cases the pictures alone are enough to give even the beginner a reasonable grasp of the task at hand. Whether your chair needs cane, wicker, rush, or other restoration, this book places specific information in your hands. Although all the examples in this book are chairs, the processes and weaving styles can be applied to many other types of furniture. The Caner's Handbook also contains chapters on wicker and Danish cord as well as information on binder cane, Shaker tapes, and rawhide weaving. The book is set up in eight chapters, each detailing a different type of seat weaving. The first chapter is an historical and general introduction to materials, tools and techniques. Later chapters each begin with a brief introduction to the specific tools and materials needed to complete the work. Questions of alternative styles and processes are also discussed at this point. Each chapter then goes on to detail a variety of specific techniques relating to the type of chair involved. This book is especially for people interested in saving money by doing the work themselves. There is great satisfaction to be taken in the successful completion of a project yourself. With The Caner's Handbook anyone can make a chair seat as good as new. On a separate note, last month one of our members donated several books to the Library to be sold with the proceeds going to the Library fund. The going price for these books will be $2 and $1. Look for them and examine them at the June meeting. Hope to see you there. You will make three boxes. The $40 feeincludes all materials. Equipment Adjustment; Sat. Aug. 26. Wayne Maier,s woorkshop, Glen Ellyn. Two sessions 810:30 and 111. The fee is $20 or $30 depending on how many sign up. Must have at least 10 or the seminar will be cancelled. Plant Tours Designed Stairs; Sat. July 15, 9am, Sandwich Il. They design and build full scale two and three story curved stairways, disassemble and reassemble on the job site This is one you won't want to miss. There is no fee but a signup sheet will be circulated at the June meeting. They need to know the number coming. 3 May Program Wayne Maier Wayne Maier John Ressler from 'Designed Stairs' was our May speaker. The subject was guitar making. He brought a l o n g some beautiful examples of guitars he had made. John also showed us examples of guitars in various stages of completion. John Ressler John took us through the construction process and methods of bending and glue up. He went on to explain the process of the edge banding and inlay. He ended his presentation with a short tune played with great sounding tones. (630) Edge Trimming Guide Trimming the solidwood edging glued to a plywood panel has always been one of my least favorite with doublesided tape. But now look close and you ll see that the fence is suspended above the table top so that the oversize edging on the panel can pass beneath it (see drawings). Finally, a narrow cutout in the fence holds the flush trim bit that s used to trim the edging. Once the auxiliary fence and the flush trim bit are in place, the edging on the panels can be trimmed with a single pass along each side. The result is a greatlooking panel and a woodworker who gets to move on to something more interesting. Have a great weekend, Ted Raife Online Editor, Woodsmith tasks. So I m always looking for a quick, easy, and accurate way to get it done. The router table setup you see in the photo at right just might be the final answer. 5 Secretary s Report Rich Rossio called the Board meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. on June 6, Present were: Bruce Kinney, Tom Karkos, Milford Lau, Wayne Maier, Tom Milleman, Tim Jerry Johnson McIntyre, Bill Eck, Si Skidmore, and Jerry Johnson. Reminder: any club member is welcome at the board meetings. The minutes and treasure s reports were approved. We now have 111 members. Jerry Johnson distributed copies of the Constitution and By Laws approved at the last general meeting. There were 51 members in attendance and the new documents were approved by unanimous voice vote. Many thanks to the thirteen members who sent proxy votes. All voted for the passage of the new Constitution and ByLaws. Jerry Johnson has sent a sympathy card to Russ Schoeller whose wife passed away and a thank you letter to St. James for making their facility available to us. He will be sending getwell cards to Len Swanson and Al Didier. The board granted an Honorary Life Membership to George McCarthy who has BOARD MEMBERS Jerry Johnson been in poor health and is unable to participate any longer. Wayne Maier has the general meeting programs lined up through October. The auction will be in July and other wood clubs in the area will be invited to participate. That should make for a more interesting auction with different and a wider selection of items than in the past few years. Milford Lau reported on the upcoming field trips and seminars. He will be representing our club as a judge of wood projects at the DuPage County Fair this summer. Tom Karkos reminded us that the next theme month in June for items made entirely with hand tools. No power tools allowed. The raffle item for June will be a premium Nielsen hand plane. We will be making a special effort to acknowledge new members at each meeting. Current members are encouraged to greet the new folks and put them in touch with members are similar interests.
