1 THE R.I.P.S.A.W. REVUE wiscwoodworkersguild.org Rendering Informative Programs Serving Area Woodworkers Volume 32 No.12 A monthly publication of the Wisconsin Woodworkers Guild December 2013 RON S RAMBLINGS Hello Everyone, Talk about having the best seat in the house. I only wish we could have gotten the camera to work so everyone could have had the same advantage I had. Klaus did a great job, but I wish we would have had more time. I like the fact that he was able to show us that even a mistake can be fixed without pulling your hair out. He was very calm about the problem and how to fix it. I was also very happy to see so many members steped up and filled the empty positions on the board. I m Guild President Ron Reuter looking forward to the January meeting to sit down with everyone and talk about new ideas and possibly some new direction. The people on the board now do a great job, but many of them are covering more than one position and I m always worried we will burn them out. I m also looking forward to my first Christmas Party. Even though my first year has past I still find out there is so many things I don t know about when it comes to the Guild, the party being one of them. Hope to see many of you there! Remember the dead line for your seat is Nov.25th. Work safe and share your hobby. Ronald Reuter Klaus Zunker did a talk and demonstration on Chip Carving at the November meeting. Klaus said that chip carving is the cheapest form of carving. The tools are two knives, one a carving knife and the other a stab knife. A piece of wood to carve on and a pattern to draw on the wood. Wayne Barton of Park Ridge, Illinois has many books and carving sets for sale. You can find his information on the internet at He has come to the WWG a couple In This Issue Reflections 1&5 Friends of the Guild 2 Rockler Schedule 2 Woodcraft Class Schedule 3 Board Briefs 3 Pictures 3,4,5 Programs & Workshops Back WWG Monthly Meeting Back times in the past for classes. Klaus is an accomplished wood carver. He does relief carving, carving in the round, and chip carving. He works on several projects at once. Klaus has been chip carving for 16 years. He says he started by accident when he purchased a cottage and was adding onto it. He built a chest and wanted it to be decorative. He goes every spring to a carving show in Springfield, Mo. His wife goes along because there is a quilting show with classes at the same time. He has won many awards for his work and he did not tell us about the awards. He is a bit modest. (Continued on page3)

3 (Continued from page 1) Klaus says the principle of chip carving is to put your knuckle down and the use the thumb to guide and pressure the carving knife on the pattern guide. Then work either clockwise or counter clockwise to do the carving. It is important to follow the pattern around so you don t chip out part of the design. Klaus draws the design on the wood using Sally Sorell Artist graphite paper, wax free. This is available at art stores or online. Klaus likes to use Basswood because it is the easiest to carve. He gets patterns from books. If he makes a mistake and chips out a piece of wood, he does use glue to put it back in. That is if he can find the chipped out piece. He puts 2 coats of sanding sealer on a piece. If he is going to paint it then he paints at that point. His lamp base shown in the picture section is a piece where he painted the carved out section. It really made the design stand out. Finally he coats the whole piece with polyurethane. On occasion when he wants a totally flat top he uses Virotech bar top finish. We thank Klaus for his presentation. And we thank Ron and anyone else who helped to show Klaus work and hold the microphone so we could hear. We probably need to get our presentation media fixed so we can all see and appreciate what our speakers are showing us. That last is an editorial note. Also, if anyone is interested in preparing a presentation, I would be willing to take pictures and make a slide show for you. It is one skill I have.
