1 The following rules are for the state contest only. Students/Teams that qualify for the national contest need to adhere to the rules and guidelines for that national contest. The rules can be found in the Skills USA Championships Technical Standards available from SkillsUSA Publication Sales. For both state and national contests, you should also watch for contest updates sent from the Wisconsin SkillsUSA state office. For national contests, you can find contest updates at the national SkillsUSA website. CABINETMAKING PURPOSE To evaluate each contestant s preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding students for excellence and professionalism in the field of cabinetmaking and millwork. GENERAL REGULATIONS People entering this contest must follow all rules listed below as well as the General Regulations of the Wisconsin Skills Championships. The General Regulations can be found at: You will be held accountable for knowing and following all rules and guidelines of the Wisconsin Skills Championships. CLOTHING REQUIREMENT White work pants and white work shirt or other appropriate work clothing; leather work shoes; and safety glasses with side shields or goggles (Prescription glasses can be used only if equipped with side shields; otherwise they must be covered with goggles). For information about purchasing official SkillsUSA work clothes, refer to the separate file called Clothing Requirements. NOTE: No athletic type shoes may be worn by contestants in this event. ELIGIBILITY Open to active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs with cabinetmaking or millwork as the occupational objective. SAFETY REQUIREMENT Both the instructors and the contestants certify by entering this contest that the contestant has received instruction and has satisfactorily passed examinations on the safe use of the following power equipment that may be used in the contest: Biscuit Jointer Hand Drill Router Power Miter Saw Biscuit Jointer Jig Saw Disc and Belt Sander Pneumatic Nailer Table Saw Kreg Pocket Screw Jig They also certify that the Wisconsin Association of SkillsUSA, the Wisconsin SkillsUSA Championships Technical Committee, and state judges are released from all responsibility relating to personal injury resulting from the use of the above listed power equipment. The signature of the advisor on the contestant registration form is also verification that proper instruction has been given. Contestants will be removed from competition if it is found that proper safety training has not been given and/or they are using equipment in an unsafe manner State Technical Standards
2 EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS 1. Supplied by the technical committee: a. All necessary stationary power tools, equipment and work stations for contestants. b. All necessary information and furnishings for judges and technical committee. c. All hardware d. All building material e. Kreg brand pocket-hole jig 2. Supplied by the contestant: a. Safety glasses or goggles (must be Z87 stamped) b. Claw hammer c. Tape Measure d. Combination square e. Two pencils f. Nail set g. Block or smooth plane (optional) h. Four 24" pipe or bar clamps i. Standard screwdriver j. Phillips tip screwdriver k. 10" or 12" flat laminate file l. Router and/or Laminate Trimmer m. Flush Trim bit for plastic laminates n. 5/16 or 3/8 radius beading router bits that fit your router o. Biscuit Jointer and biscuits p. Cordless hand drill and extra battery q. 1/16, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16 &1/4" twist drill bits r. Extension cord (10 feet 12 or 14 gauge recommended) s. Utility Knife t. Earplugs or Hearing Protection u. Palm or orbital sander (Supply your own abrasives) v. High tack wood glue (such as Elmer's Carpenter's wood glue) w. Kreg Jig (optional) x. Band clamp y. J roller z. 2 disposable china brush aa. Shop rags for clean-up bb. Contact adhesive (Non-flammable) NOTE: No additional tools will be permitted SCOPE OF THE CONTEST State Technical Standards
3 1. Contestants will be given all necessary information by job sheets or prints of articles to be constructed. Contestants will use joinery techniques as specified. 2. Contestants will demonstrate their ability to perform jobs or skills selected from the following list of competencies as determined by the contest Technical Committee: a. Applying Wood Veneers and Plastic Laminates 1. Apply adhesives, edge banding and wood edges 2. Apply laminate to core 3. Cut plastic to size 4. Fit plastic laminate joints 5. Trim edges b. Assemble, Fasten and Install Components 1. Apply clamping devices 2. Assemble drawers, panel door and joint 3. Assemble ends, back, bracing and face frame 4. Attach molding/trim 5. Fasten parts with nails, screws and staples 6. Fasten top to casework 7. Glue boards edge to edge 8. Install catches, doors, drawer rail and guides, hinges, pulls and knobs, shelves and track and slide for sliding doors 9. Reinforce joints with block/dowel/biscuit c. Cutting and Shaping Components 1. Cut butt joint, counter top, dado/rabbet joint, doors, doweled joint, and drawer guides and runners (rails) 2. Cut drawer front, sides, back and bottom 3. Cut ends, back, and interior bracing 4. Cut face frame, miter joints, molding trim, mortise and tenon joints, frames and panels, shelving, spline joints, and tongue and groove joints 5. Cut out for sink 6. Edge (shape) counter top 7. Plane stock 8. Square solid stock d. Designing and Laying Out 1. Determine materials from a blueprint 2. Draw detailed plans 3. Estimate labor and material cost 4. Sketch shop plans e. Finishing Surfaces 1. Apply lacquers, paints, stains, varnishes/polyurethanes, and wood filler to nail or screw holes 2. Clean surfaces 3. Remove excess glue 4. Sand surfaces 5. Swell dents 3. All contestants will be provided with similar kits of wood and hardware State Technical Standards
4 4. Contestants will be evaluated on the following: a. Layout and construction of project 1. Accuracy in measuring and cutting - one point off for every 1/16" mistake in - measuring - cutting - milling joints (depth and width) 2. Workmanship (neatness) - one point off for each of the following infractions - hammer marks - bent and/or protruding nails - chipped/broken exposed edges - glue spots and exposed areas - dents and nicks on exposed areas b. Safety 1. Safety equipment - one point off for each infraction - push sticks--where applicable - eye protection--face shield, goggles 2. Clothing, personal - one point off for each infraction - long, unbuttoned sleeves - shirt-tail out - loose jewelry, ties, etc. - hair too long--not tied up or under cap 3. General machine operation and work area - one point off for each infraction - dirty, messy work area - safety infractions on machine use - nails sticking in boards, etc. c. Completion 1. Project will be divided into components, and points will be awarded for each component completed 8. The contestant may be penalized up to five points for not complying with the clothing requirements. Absence of prescribed personal safety items may disqualify contestant State Technical Standards
