1 SkillsUSA California Carpentry 2019 Regional Competition SCOPE OF THE COMPETITION: - Knowledge Performance The contest will include a written test that assesses the knowledge of carpentry including but not limited to building materials, foundations and forms, rough framing, roof framing, exterior finish, interior finish, stairs, lumber, and tools. - Skill Performance The contest will assess accuracy, workmanship, the ability to read and interpret plans and the proper use of tools, equipment and materials. Contestants will frame walls using wood and steel studs, cut and install rafters and fascia. Exterior siding and trim may be included. Demonstration of knowledge of stair construction may be required. - OSHA 10 Certification: All contestants are asked to complete an OSHA 10 certification prior to the Skills California State competition. All contestants must provide a copy of their OSHA 10 at the first day of competition. Students who have not completed the OSHA 10 or do not have with them at the time of the competition will receive a 10% reduction in their final score for the competition. - Resume Each Contestant must turn in and typed resume SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: - Safety Form for Tools and Materials: Both the instructor and the contestant certify by agreeing to enter this contest that the contestant has received instructions and has satisfactorily passed an examination on the safe use of a portable power saw. They also certify that the contestant s saw has been thoroughly inspected and is in safe working condition. Further they agree that SkillsUSA Inc., the SkillsUSA Championships technical committee and national judges are released from all responsibility relating to personal injuries resulting from its use. Contestants will be removed from competition if proper training has not been provided and/or they are using the equipment in an unsafe manner. - Safety Statement: Each contestant is responsible for bringing the proper PPE to wear while participation in the contest. Safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, work boots and appropriate dress must be worn at all times when in the competition area. Each contestant must turn in a signed SkillsUSA Safety Form to the competition chairman on the day of the competition.

2 CONTEST GUIDELINES: - Time Limit Contestants will be stopped when time limits as specified on contest job sheet are up. Contestants may stop whenever they have completed a particular phase of the contest but must remain within contest area. - Clean up The dismantling of the project will be considered the final sequence task of the contest. - Note: If desired, a contestant may choose to use a standard handsaw without penalties. TOOLS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR CONTEST - Contestant Required Tools: Required SkillsUSA competition clothing - Please refer to SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards. Work boots Safety glasses or goggles Pencils (sharpened) Carpenter s tool and nail pouch with belt and/or suspenders Utility knife Framing Hammer Finish hammer Speed square Combination square Carpenters square 25 Tape Measure (plus extra) Power circular saw (with new blade) Power reciprocating saw (Sawzall) with new metal and demo blades Jigsaw with new blades 2-25' power cord (UL approved grounded) Tin snips or aviation snips 24 Level Cordless drill with Phillips tips Cordless impact/ driver with Phillips tips Drywall saw Cat s paw Wrecking bar 4- in 1 screwdriver or equivalent Chalk line Clamps 2 - Vice Grip C Clamps (for metal studs) 2 - Saw Horses Stair gauges (optional) One 8 pt. crosscut saw (10 pt. or 12 pt. optional) Non-programmable calculator (optional) - Provided by SkillsUSA All lumber and materials, as specified on the job sheet Job sheets and blueprints for each contestant

3 Safety Form for Tools and Materials SkillsUSA California - Carpentry Competition The SkillsUSA California Carpentry Competition will involve the use of equipment and materials in completing the task within the competition. It is absolutely necessary that complete operating instructions and safety for the use of equipment and materials have been given to the contestant in their training program in the local school division as stated in the National SkillsUSA National Standards before he competes. This includes the proper safety instruction in the use of the tools listed in the scope of the contest and the use of protective equipment while using the tools and materials. Safety glasses are required. By the affixing of my signature below, I certify that my student, who is entering the Carpentry Competition, has had proper operating and safety instruction in the use of the power tools, equipment and materials. 5 SKILLS California Hand/ Power Tool Contest Pre-use Inspection Form Some portable power tools require a more thorough inspection. Check the manufacturer s recommendation for more advanced power tools. Before using hand tools inspect for the following: The outside of the tool is free of grease, oil and accumulated foreign matter The tool has no visible cracks in jaws or handle Blades or bits are not damaged, cracked, etc. Handles are not cracked, damaged or loose from heads of hammers, axes mauls and other similar tools Tips of screwdrivers, chisels or other similar tools show no excessive wear Gripping surfaces pliers, wrenches or other similar tools are not worn Tools such as chisels and punches do not have mushroomed heads Cutting tools such as chisels and axes are sharp Tool appears to be in generally good condition Before using portable power tools inspect for the following: The outside of the tool is free of grease, oil and accumulated foreign matter Tool power-source shows no damage (cord, airline, battery, etc.) Tool is double insulated and tool housing is not damaged If not double insulated the equipped, electrical cord third prong (ground) is intact All shields, guards or attachments required by OSHA or manufacturer are present Rotating or moving parts of tool are guarded to prevent physical contact Tool is not leaking fluid such as grease, oil etc. Blades or bits are not damaged, cracked, etc. Tool appears to be in generally good condition Proper PPE is available

The contestant will use this form to document the use inspection of each power and hand tool that will be used for the SKILLS Regional and State building trades competitions. 2. Each hand and power tool must be inspected prior to competition using the stated inspection criteria above or owner s manuals. All tools muse receive a pass (P), improvement needed (I), Fail (F) marking. All tools must receive a passing marking to be used in the competition. All marking and measuring tools will receive an NA. 3. Any corrective steps taken must be noted in the notes section next to the item. a. Examples of corrective actions include: cleaning, repairs needed, removed, tagged out of service. 4. Contestant s advisors must also print and sign they have reviewed the tools prior to competition. 5. Forms will be collected at the beginning of the competition. a. Any contestant/ team that does not submit form will be required to complete inspection prior to start of competition. 6. All contestants will be subject to random tool safety inspections throughout the competition.
