ST. PATRICK S COLLEGE SILVERSTREAM BCATS Level Building Construction and Allied Trades Skills Course Handbook This book with be used throughout the course as a source of information and as a record of the projects and learning activities during the year. Students Name Teacher - Mr Paul Wilson

Welcome to BConstructive BConstructive is a hands-on qualification. It is an innovative, practical and multi-disciplinary programme for students, providing them with the skills and knowledge to springboard into any career in the construction industry. The BConstructive programme is primarily workshop based. Rather than focusing on any one trade the programme builds skills and an understanding of all trades in the construction industry. It also develops literacy, numeracy and communication skills and has close links with the NCEA and Technology curriculums. There are two qualifications currently available in the BConstructive programme. These are offered at years 11 and 12 in school or at polytechnics and private training establishments. It s free to deliver for registered users and all the resources you need are available to download online. National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills Level1 (v2) National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills Level 2 (v2) Students who participate in the BConstructive programme can go on to consider apprenticeships in a variety of trades such as: building, construction, plumbing, drainlaying, roofing, gasfitting, painting and decorating, infrastructure, flooring and joinery. The programme also provides a good base for students who would like to enter other related areas of the construction industry such as architecture, quantity surveying and estimating. The programme complements other schemes such as Gateway, careers and transition programmes, work experience and Young Enterprise. The BConstructive programme was developed by a group of construction related industry training organisations (ITOs) known as the Built Environment Training Alliance or BETA. The BETA ITOs that form the core group are; Building and Construction ITO Creative Trades ITO New Zealand Flooring ITO InfraTrain Joinery ITO Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying and Roofing ITO

Welcome to Level 2 Carpentry at St Patrick s College Silverstream This year you will learn to use hand tools, portable power tools and fixed machinery to produce at least 3 different projects. The year is partly theory and partly practical. You should expect to cover more theory than at Level 1. You should be able to work more independently than at Level 1 and should be able to produce work that is of higher quality. The projects have been chosen to allow you to demonstrate the skills required at Level 2. The projects are: 1. Small storage box 2. Step stool 3. Saw Horse 4. Cupboard The projects have been chosen to ensure that you cover all the requirements of the BCATS Level 2 course. During this course you will be expected to: Work safely at all times Help to clear up at the end of each workshop session Communicate in a friendly and positive manner with the teacher and other students Produce a cutting list and project plan for each project, and make sure that you are on track to complete your project by the due date Carry out quality checks to make sure that your work is of an acceptable standard Demonstrate that you understand how to use and maintain the tools by completing the unit standard booklets and written tests If you are prepared to work hard this year you should be able to gain your Level 2 National Certificate in Carpentry this year, as well at 39 credits towards your Level 2 NCEA. This booklet contains the paperwork that you are required to do. Look after this booklet as you will be required to hand it in as evidence of your learning.

CUTTING LIST Project Title: Part Name Width (mm) Thickness (mm) Length (m) Qty Material

PROJECT TIMELINE Project Title: Term (1,2,3 or 4) Week (1 to 11) ACTIVITIES: Draw planning version in RED or BLUE pen. Use pencil to shade in the ACTUAL time each stage takes. You will need to put in extra time if you fall behind schedule.

To make a saw horse Cut top to 900mm. Mark out joints. 150mm from end. Back angle from template. Front is square. 22mm in at top. 10mm in at bottom. Tenon saw to cut down into the joint. Chisel joint out chisel in direction of the grain. Chisel down to the lines on top and bottom. Then put chisel flat and smooth out so angle is exactly right. Use sliding bevel to check. Check angles are square. LEGS: Cut top of leg. Use sliding bevel. Make angle start 36mm down the long side. Fit leg into joint. Check for any gaps and adjust joint so there are no gaps greater than 1mm. Mark out screws. Find centre line for screws (half of width of top) & draw line across the leg Mark in 20mm from each side plus one screw in the middle (45mm from edge). Clearance hole (4.5mm), Pilot hole (3.0mm) and countersink each hole. Insert screws and tighten firmly. Use hand screwdriver instead of power drill to avoid rounding the heads of the screws. CLEATS: Plane top of cleat to fit under the top. Mark lines on all 4 sides before you start to plane. Use handplane or power plane as preferred. Test depth of cut on scrap piece before starting. Mark lines using sliding bevel, set to the template. Ensure legs run parallel to the cut sides of the cleat. Fit sides of cleat to the same width as the legs. Screw (x4) the cleat to the legs (find centre line of legs, make sure holes are symmetrical top to bottom). Drill holes square to the legs to ensure screws do not protrude out the sides of the legs. BRACES: Mark two ends using the sliding bevel copy the exact angle from the inside of the cleat as fitted. Must be a parallelogram. Draw a diagonal down the long diagonal. Cut ends using drop saw. Cut diagonal using band saw. Then cut the brace to be half the length of the inside of the cleats.

Drill two screws close to the ends of the cleat (30 and 80mm approx.). You may need to counterbore the screws if they are not long enough (use 8mm drill bit for this with masking tape to set depth) To mark the screws through the cleat find the centre line, draw a line up square then mark holes at 30 and 60 (?)mm. Drill in square to the brace to avoid splitting. TOP OF LEGS: Cut off top of legs using jigsaw or tenon saw. Set jigsaw angle to sliding bevel. Mar the cut line on the outside of the leg before cutting & confirm that you will not be cutting in to the top of the saw horse. BOTTOM OF LEGS: Turn saw horse upside down. Using the measuring jig, make a small mark at both sides of the INSIDE of the leg. Make sure the saw horse and the measuring jig are flat on the groung when you do this, and that the leg is not being pushed out. Join the two marks up with a ruler for a straight line. Repeat for a 4 legs Place the sawhorse on the bench and clamp. Cut with jigsaw, keeping to the waste side of the line, SANDING. Sand using belt sander and oscillating sander to remove all rough edges and pencil marks.

Saw Horse Assessment Criteria SAFE WORKING Safe working practices are used at all times. Correct use of tools for the task at hand Correct use of safety equipment at all times All tools & machinery to be used in a safe and appropriate manner at all times COMMUNICATION & COOPERATION Good communication skills are demonstrated throughout the project. Tools are replaced on the racks and the workshop is left clean and tidy at the end of each class. SAW HORSE Saw horse must be stable Angles should be the same No gaps are allowed on the joints when legs are fitted Legs must be of equal height Screws to be countersunk Saw horse must be level Saw horse must be the correct height

Saw Horse Assessment Student Name: Manufacture of saw horse: Assessor Sign off All joints a tight fit All screw holes marked out neatly and symmetrically All screws holes have clearance hole AND are countersunk. Legs are symmetrical and at the correct angle Cleats are parallel to the legs +/ 2mm No more than 1mm gap between top of cleat and underside of top. All surfaces smooth Top of legs is flush with top of saw horse Bottom of legs are all flush to the ground. Saw horse does not wobble. All pencil marks have been sanded off. Assessor Comment: Comment
