A firefighter should always follow safety procedures when using tools. The use of PPE (personal protective equipment) reinforces fundamental safe work practices, as well as following s p when using hand and power tools. Unpowered tools are the most common tool type, designed to be carried and used by one person, although some may require two people. Unpowered tools require following s p when using hand tools. Remove loose clothing and keep long hair clear of operating tool heads. Remove jewelry, including rings and watches. Follow manufacturer s instructions. Inspect tools before use to determine condition. Do not use badly worn or broken tools. Provide adequate storage space for tools and always return promptly after use. Get approval of manufacturer before modifying any tool. Use intrinsically safe tools when working in potentially flammable atmospheres, such as around a vehicle s fuel system. 2
