Maintain tools Maintain Floristry Tools and Equipment Introduction Introduction This unit covers the tools and equipment, that are used on a regular basis within a florist shop/ floral studio. We will look at what tools and equipment is used in the floristry industry We will look at who the tools are used, as well as the Work health safety issues that you need to be aware of when using the item? And we will look at the Handling and storage requirements of these tools. Key points for Maintenance of Floristry Equipment Maintain Tools and Identify when equipment requires maintenance. Regularly check all equipment Recognise and report unsafe equipment Identify and be aware of scheduled maintenance Be aware of manufacturerss instructions Use safety equipment and guards as instructed Report all equipment issues with supervisors Use organisations appropriate documentation as supplied Store tools and equipment Choose Correct conditions to store tools Store in an appropriate safe location in accordance to the correct conditions Store safely when transporting Consider the environment when cleaning equipment. Contaminants into waterways Wastage of water Recycling Floristry tools Red and White Floristry scissors Description
Red-and-white cutters or scissors from probably the most used equipment in the floristry industry. They are used to cut stem material of a certain size however only standard size or small size material should be used when using the red-and-white cutters. If you need to cut heavier stems such as Proteas or Banksias secateurs should be used, as using red-and-white covers will damage your hands and can lead to RSI or repetitive strain injuries. Work health Safety Issues As mentioned above RSI or repetitive strain injuries is one of the many causes of injury when using red-and-white cutters. Other injuries that can be caused by using the red and white cutters include slicing fingers or hands. This can be caused by the red-and-white scissors becoming blunt and slipping when using them. Unfortunately red-and-white cutters do not sharpening very well and are usually replaced regularly as they are only relatively cheap in cost. Maintenance At the end of the day your red-and-white cutters should be wiped clean with a drag or towel and allowed to dry before storing away. Occasionally they should be world all lubricated with a lubricating oil such as boiled linseed oil tung oil or WD-40 can be used if stored for a period of time As mentioned above red and white cutters do not sharpen well and should not be sharpened that simply discarded when they become blunt. Storage and Transportation Red and white cutters should be stored in a drawer (closed) or in the floristry box closed until needed. When transporting they must be transported within your toolbox so as not able to be able to fly around in case of an accident.
Red and White cutters should be only used for cutting small and medium stems. TAFE NSW
Power Drill Description A drill is a tool fitted with a cutting tool attachment or driving tool attachment, usually a drill bit or driver bit, used for drilling holes in various materials or fastening various materials together with the use of fasteners. You may use a drill in the floristry industry for drilling things such as bamboo or for the installation of and large-scale floral displays such as displays you might do in a trade show, such as the one recently undertaken for Better Homes and Gardens OHS/WHS issues The drill bit has very sharp cutting edges so take care when handling, care must be taken when picking up the drill bit as the sharp and pieces of steel on the age may cut your skin. When drilling Material such as steel small fragments may become airborne so the wearing of glasses is imperative. Maintenance Little maintenance required, leads and plugs need to be checked for damage, wipe tools dry with a rag or towel, or let them dry before storing them away. Also, as the drill is an electrical appliance must never be used if wet and must be stored in such a place as it cannot become week from spillage from flower buckets.
A Battery operated power drill can be useful for onsite construction TAFE NSW
Pliers Description Pliers come in a variety of shapes and sizes and a very useful in the floristry industry holding bits of wire twisting while holding nails so that we don t get our finger when hammering cutting wire and a few other various uses within the floristry industry. The pliers are you gripping tools which consist of two arms that are able to clamp down with a serrated jaws the close and on the work. As mentioned above the come in a variety of different shapes and sizes the ones that we use mostly in the floristry industry other pointy nose pliers and the bullnose pliers. Pointy nosed pliers Pointy nose pliers as the name implies have a pointy end sometimes called needle pliers these pliers are very useful for tightening wire and for the holding of nails for punching them in with a hammer. Bull nosed pliers Bullnose pliers are used for holding nails and to twisting larger pieces of wire and for the removal of nails so can be handy for other types of jobs in the forestry industry Work health Safety Issues Previously known as OHS issues for pliers include the wearing of safety goggles when cutting things like wire pieces of wire may become airborne and can easily fly off and hit somebody in the eye. Also when cutting wire you should try to direct the piece that may come off so that it will not impact on other people within the area. The other types of injury caused by pliers are usually the pinching type which can affect the hand of the user. Care must be taken when using the pliers to make sure that the hand is away from the pinching mechanism. Maintenance Pliers should be stored in the toolbox after wiping with a dry rag and allowing to dry before storing them away. The occasional application of WD-40 will assist in the movement of the pliers and avoid rusting. Storage and Transportation Pliers should be stored in the toolbox when transporting the should never be allowed to be able to move freely within a car as if an accident is to take place the Pliers could become airborne and cause further injuries.
Pliers can be useful for many different tasks including holding objects, and bending and cutting wire TAFE NSW
Wire cutters Description Although pliers can be useful cutting wire wire cutters are specially designed to and the cut wire. They consist of a sharp blade with two handles and should only ever be used for cutting wire and not other tasks. Work health Safety Issues (Previously known as OHS issues) Just like pliers, wire cutters can cause injury when the wire cut becomes airborne as well as pinch injuries to the hand. Maintenance As with pliers why customers should be wiped clean with a dry rag and the occasional application of WD-40 before storage. Storage and Transportation Wire cutters should be stored in the toolbox or drawer closed and when transporting they should be transported in the toolbox which is should be closed and secured when driving. If the wire cutters are allowed to become airborne during a crash that could cause further injury to the occupants.
Wire cutters are mainly used for cutting wire TAFE NSW
Knife Description With a coloured plastic handle the cheap knives are sharpened on both sides just like a regular knife. Use The Knife is used in place of the red and white cutters when creating a floral arrangement. It has the advantage over scissors or cutters as it does not need to be returned to the bench with each use and can be kept in the hand when working on your arrangement. This means that you can work faster once you have mastered it use. Work health Safety Issues (Previously known as OHS issues) Most injuries caused by knives are cuts to hands and fingers and occasionally cuts to feet, if dropped and incorrect footwear is worn. Closed footwear must always be used when working in the floristry industry. The blade of the Knife Maintenance Knives should be used clean and sharp, as blunt knives knives are responsible for most of the injuries involving the use of knives. At the end of the day knives should be washed and wipe down with a clean rag or towel and then stored appropriately. Storage and Transportation Knives need to be stored correctly they should be carefully wrapped in a paper or something that can prevent the person needing to use it from cutting themselves when grabbing it from the toolbox. One option could be to use a toothbrush holder (clamshell type), to put your knife in when storing in your toolbox or in a draw.
Care should be taken when using the knife, for cutting flowers. TAFE NSW Video: How to cut your flowers with a knife, by Periwinkle Flowers, Toronto.
Budding Knife Description A budding knife is the tool used by horticulturist to create a budding or graft union in plants. We sometimes use it in the floristry industry because it is a precision tool and is safer to use than the knife. This is because the budding knife is only sharpened on one side, also meaning that comes in both left and right handed tools. As the budding knife is only sharpened on one side the flat side of the knife that is not sharpened should be held towards the stem that you are cutting and the knife is drawn away from you in a scissor like action with the plant material on the other side. Use The Budding Knife is used in place of the red and white cutters when creating a floral arrangement. It has the advantage over scissors or cutters as it does not need to be returned to the bench with each use and can be kept in the hand as working on your arrangement. This means that you can work faster once you have mastered it use. It is safer to use than the cheap knife as it is sharpened on one side only. The flat non-beveled side is placed next to the stem and drawn away making sure that you fingers are not in the way. Being sharpened on one side only they come in left and right handed models. Work health Safety Issues (Previously known as OHS issues) A budding knife must be kept sharp to work effectively, as blunt knives can slip on the material causing cuts. A correctly sharpened budding life is extremely sharp and the blade should never be touched with any part of your body or finger. When not in use the Budding Knife should be closed and put down on the bench. Maintenance As mentioned above a budding knife must be kept sharp to work effectively blunt knives are slippery and dangerous and how more likely to cause injury than a sharp blade. After use the budding should be carefully wipe down with some oil or WD-40 and closed after drying and stored in the drawer or toolbox. Storage and Transportation The Budding Knife should always be stored closed and placed in your toolbox. You should never store your budding knife open as this is likely to lead to cuts or injuries.

Hammer Description The hammer is a tool that is used for hammering nails into pieces of wood or for securing stakes into the ground. Work health Safety Issues (Previously known as OHS issues) Some of the OHS issues involved using the hammer include striking the fingers and causing injury to fingers when trying to strike nails into wood. One should always be careful when striking things such as steel as small pieces of steel can fly off and hit the user in the eye. safety glasses should be worn when using the hammer. Never use a hammer with a loose or broken handle as the hammerhead could come flying off while in use. Always replace the handle if it is loose or cracked. When you have finished using your hammer you should wipe your tool with a dry rag or tell allowed to dry before storage. Maintenance The hammer and handled can be wiped over whether linseed or tongue well before storage. And as mentioned above always check that the handle is secured to the hammerhead. Storage and Transportation Care you should be taken when storing the hammer during transportation the hammer could become airborne during an accident causing further injury to the occupants.
Claw hammer can be used to hammer nails into wood as well as removing nails. TAFE NSW Video: How to correctly use a hammer
Saw Description There are many types of saw s that are available from the hardware store. that the one that is most commonly used in the floristry industry is known as a handsaw for a panel saw and another one that is used in the floristry industry is the pruning saw. They are used for cutting large dams that cannot be cut with secateurs including material such as bamboo, which is impossible to cut with other cutting tools. Work health Safety Issues Previously known as OHS issues The Saw, can sometimes cause injury to hands and slicing away from your body and keep your fingers away from the blade of the best method to avoid this. Maintenance What tools for the dry radical towel and allow them to dry before storage, in a dry situation. The saw maybe sharpened using a special tool or though this can be done for your usually by taking your Saw to the hardware store to be sharpened. Storage and Transportation The Saw should be stored in a dry position and stored in the toolbox for transportation.
A hand saw should not be used if damaged or missing teeth TAFE NSW Video: How to Saw Wood With a Handsaw
Secateurs Description Secateurs are small pruning shears with a spring that holds the handles open and a single blade the cuts against the flat surface there often called a bypass pruner or a Secateur. Used for cutting through standard to medium size stems all of Plant material. Work health Safety Issues Previously known as OHS issues Secateurs can cut or slice the hands or crush fingers or hands within this mechanism safety glasses goggles should be worn when cutting material with flying particles may be a hazard. Maintenance Secateurs should be coated with a light well when they not in use the should be stored in the toolbox or a dry place. Secateurs can be sharpened using a fine metal file or sharpening stone to sharpen the I cutting edge, please see the video below to see how to sharpen the secateurs. Storage and Transportation Should be cleaned with a rag and stored closed with the latch clased in the tool box or drawer.
Secateurs should always be kept clean and sharp TAFE NSW Video: Sharpening your secateurs Video: Correct cleaning of your secateurs will help them last for many years
Step ladder Description The stepladder is a portable ladder design for the supporting frame and often has a handle which projects from the top and they come in a large range of colours and sizes. They are commonly used in the floristry industry to reach for the items on high shelves all for the creation of large floral displays on site. Work health Safety Issues (Previously known as OHS issues) When using the stepladder you should make sure that you have opened the stepladder and the spreaders fully open check for stability and ensure that all of the stepladders feet are on a firm level non-slippery surface. Place at the stepladder at right angles to the work with either the front or the back of this steps facing the work. When closing your stepladder make sure that your fingers are well away from the mechanism. Maintenance Little maintenance is required however you should watch your step at a dry with a rag or towel and allow to dry before storage and always check for defects or faults within your stepladder. Faulty stepladders should be replaced immediately.
A step ladder should be checked for damage before use TAFE NSW
Hot Glue Gun Description The glue gun is a tool that is used to apply hot glue to your work. Hot glue sticks are placed within the tools and then they to all is allowed to heat up to melt the glue so that it is able to be applied to the work. Hot glue is used in the floristry industry to glue items that are non-floral material such as paper fabric and glass to items that we may use in the floristry industry. Work health Safety Issues (Previously known as OHS issues) There are many O H and S or Work Health Safety issues relating to the glue gun. Before use you should inspect your glue gun for cracks in the handle and body make sure there is no old glue in the nozzle which is clogging up the nozzle. if you find any damage to the glue gun or the cord do not use it under any circumstances. Do not touch the hot glue until it is dry and hot glue can severely burned the skin and if this happens you need to run your hand under cold water for at least 10 minutes. Maintenance You should regularly inspect your glue gun to see if it has any faults such as cracks or damage to the cord if this occurs it should be replaced immediately clear guns cannot be repaired. Storage and Transportation The Glue gun should be stored in the tool box or another dry place where is cannot come in cntact with water.
